3 Body Problem (2024)
Who wrote these characters and dialogue?
The story is decent but whoever wrote the characters and most of the dialogue needs to go
Jin and Auggie are simply unsufferable. Auggie seems unable to go 10 lines without swearing. They always seem on the verge of throwing a tantrum. Like it's literally making it difficult to watch because I feel attacked through the screen. I know this is the idea that some writers have about "strong women" but I don't think it's working. Also why do they react to everything by getting mad lmao aren't they scientists?
Enough has been said about Will's only character traits being that he has cancer and he can't propose to Jin. He's unsufferable
Wade and the detective are so stereotyped that it becomes laughable at times. Sometimes Wade says "cool stuff" that doesn't even make sense
I'm sorry because the story is good but so much revolved around these unsufferable characters, and I suppose it will going forward since we aren't going to see the Aliens for a couple hundred years.
Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan (2021)
A very bad production
While the story of Billy Milligan's alleged multiple personalities, the legal implication, the psychology behind it and all the folklore that generated around his case could be a really interesting topic, the production of this documentary is just terrible.
Let's start by saying this is the usual Netflix-style documentary miniseries made up of the same elements the you can find in a lot of other productions:
-interviews to people who were there at the time (a mix of family of the culprit, law enforcement people, journalists, subject matter experts...)
-real footage recorded at the time
-made up footage to re-enact the events that were not recorded, especially the crimes
-a lot of cutaways, camera work and unsettling sound effects to keep up the tension in what is essentially people sitting on a chair being interviewed
This is an established format used by Netflix for its documentaries and I have to say I don't hate it, as a matter of fact I've quite enjoyed some of these productions, especially when revolving around a crime/mistery related theme or personality (I believe the Ted Bundy and Henry Lee Lucas ones are decent productions)
However in this case they just made a complete mess and the result looks like a parody of the above format:
-the interview are uninteresting, they mostly focus on unimportant stuff or family members that keep repeating the same 2 things for 4 hours. At a certain point they throw in some random french psychologists to comment Billy's behaviour which was quite funny as it just looked like a show off. The psychology discussion is kept at a very high level, the experts interviewed basically just repeat that they either believe or don't believe in multiple personalities disorder as a real illness. Doesn't get any deeper than that.
-the real footage is scarce and repeated several times
-the made up footage is a lot and again, repeated several times and inserted unnecessarily every 2 minutes in a wasted effort to keep you "on edge" or whatever they were trying to do
-the camera work and use of light and sound effects will probably cause you nausea by the end of the 4 episodes. It is one of the most overdone productions I've ever seen in this sense.
However, to me it is the first point which completely ruined this documentary. The superficial interviews and low effort they put into telling and then analyzing Billy's story are the real problem. It looks like they were trying not to offend anyone involved in the story by contesting the takes of the psychiatrists and law-officials that managed the case at the time. A lot of Billy's life is skipped or just briefly mentioned while you've got a full episode of random people presenting themselves. "I'm Billy's childhood friend, he was really gentle when we played as kids, I can't believe this is the same guy" yeah who cares.
In conclusion, if you're interested in this topic definitely look up other resources.
I Am Groot (2022)
Uninspired and unfunny
It exists for the sole purpose of pumping merchandise sales and creating "meme material" to keep the Marvel brand relevant. They didn't even bother trying to make it inspired and interesting in any way. People reviewing this keep saying it was for kids, no kid would find this funny, only 35yr old braindead marvel fans who are gonna buy the baby groot shirt after watching this.
Batman & Robin (1997)
A misunderstood gem
I really don't get all the hate that this movie gets. You'd have to be mentally deficient to not understand that all the stuff you criticize it for is done on purpose. This movie is an obvious tribute to the old comic-books stories and to Adam West's Batman. Like the tv-series featuring Adam West, what makes it so fun is the fact that you never truly get if it is intentional comedy or not while you watch it. I mean, like I said you do get it if you have a functioning brain, but it's the kind of comedy that works because they don't throw a bunch of lame jokes at you (*coff-coff suicide squad coff coff*) but they keep it really subtle and you actually have to use your brain a little bit to really get all the absurd and nonsensical stuff that happens and laugh. I also loved the settings, the colour palette, the over-the-top villains and the pacing of the movie.
So if you don't have a sense of humour and like to watch hearthless, soul-less movies that feature a bunch of people talking in colourless settings and 3 minutes of actual superheroes doing stuff, go watch suicide squad, the amazing spiderman or batman v superman. If not, enjoy this masterpiece.
