Everything Beautiful Is Far Away (2017)
Glad I stuck around til the end!
It was so slow that after about 20 minutes I went to IMDB to read reviews. Pretty mixed bag, with some loving it and others feeling it was a waste of time. I said to my husband that if it didn't get better in the next 15 to 20 minutes that I would find something else to watch. Then something happened. I got caught up with the characters and I really wanted to see what was going to happen to them.
I could even give reason why they didn't get sunburned even with their pale skin. It's the future, it's sunny with hardly any clouds but they never sweat so it must be cool and if the desert is cool during the day, then maybe the sun doesn't have harmful rays that tan the skin. I know this is just a foolish point because the movie is much deeper than it appears on the surface.
I'm glad I watched it all the way as I think this story will be one I will remember a long time, unlike a lot of movies I've seen that I don't even remember the next day.
I mainly watched it for Julia Garner. She does t disappoint. Both the leads were believable characters.
Most Guys Are Losers (2020)
It sounded a lot better than it was!
I really wanted to like this. Butttttt it just kept getting worse and worse. So full of really dumb cliches from the sweet but misguided dad, the little brother who tried to be cute but was just annoying and then throw in the looser ex boyfriend trying to take advantage of the younger sister, the trans character, it just goes on and on. Why don't people just talk to each other and trust each other and they could avoid all the unnecessary drama. I did hang on until the end but it was a wasted couple of hours of my life. I was just hoping it would get better. NOPE, if anything it got worse. Lots of movies are predictable but the actors and the story make us watch and we are entertained. This one not so much.
Viaje todo robado (2023)
Fun family comedy
Have to read the closed caption but I'd rather do that than listen to some of the horrible dubbing on so many of the foreign films I've tried to watch on Netflix.
This was one of the few foreign films I've made it through. The trouble with dubbed films is the lines are just being read from the script and not actually acted. It ruins the movie and it ruins the feeling of the movie. All the actors in this film were very good. All likable and relatable. If you are looking for a light hearted fun movie with no violence or cussing, then check this one out. It's fun and I'd watch it again. The story moved along at a good pace. And the story wasnt sappy or syrupy.
Candy Cane Lane (2023)
At least no foul language
My husband wanted to watch because it is a Christmas movie. I wasn't expecting it to be very good. There have been so many "Christmas" movies over the past few years that were pretty bad, ones I would never watch again. This was much better than I was expecting. The story was ok, not magical. The main characters were ok, not memorable- but I didn't dislike them. I enjoyed the first hour much more than the last. Agree with one of the other reviewers, it was too long. A little too much silliness with some of the situations. It's certainly not up there with "It's a Winderful Life" "Miracle on 34th Street" or " A Christmas Story". As I wrote these titles, it dawned on me what those movies all have in common and what this movie lacks - Heart & real emotion. Biggest plus was no foul language. I'm not a prude but I get so tired of hearing cuss words used every third word for no reason.
Dracula 2000 (2000)
Entertaining take on Dracula
I watched this because I like Gerard Butler. I kept watching and watching and watching and since this is a 23 year old movie thought he might just have a small part. I finally went to IMDB & couldn't believe what I was reading. He's Dracula - No Way. I thought someone had made a mistake. No one did! I could see no resemblance to the Gerard I'm used to seeing. I cannot believe his looks have changed that much and that facial hair makes him look so different. Finally towards the end in a flashback, kind of looked like him. Very interesting how the story reveals why the cross & silver are the only things to stop Dracula. More interesting than a lot of Dracula movies I've watched.
Amy's F-It List (2023)
Find some other movie to watch.
The two leads were pleasant enough to watch. They have more talent than this movie deserves. Story just never really engaged me. I did hang in & watched til the end hoping for some kind of a positive ending. Did not happen. A few funny scenes, but more cringy ones than entertaining ones. Seems like it got to the end and the writer didn't know how to tie it up with an ending that was plausible, so they threw in a last minute "twist" that made even less sense than the rest of the movie. Seems like too many of these kinds of movies showing up anymore. Guess just about anyone can make a movie now days whether the story makes any sense or not. One last thing. Most of the actors in this cannot act at all and the writer must think that the use of the big "F" word makes their acting better. It doesn't.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)
Slapstick Humor at its best.
Just watched this movie again today. First saw when it came out in 1963 when I was 19 & newly married. It still holds up. I now watch it more for the fantastic stunt work rather than the comedy. They must have used a huge stunt team. I still enjoy watching it with my husband because he loves this type of humor - slapstick. I outgrew it, but it's fun watching with him and his laughter makes me enjoy it more. It's truly a star studded cast with so many great comedians from the past. If you just want to be entertained with no sex, drugs or over the top violence, then take a look and enjoy. You can watch this with your grandkids or great grandkids and not be embarrassed. If I sound like a prude, I'm not, but it's pleasant just watching old fashioned goofiness.
The plot just involves a bunch of people trying to get to some stolen burried money before the rest - they get into all kinds of mishaps along the way and therein lies the slapstick humor.
Telemarketers (2023)
Eye opening documentary
Had little idea how the telemarketing industry was ran. Probably my not all like this shows, but just WOW!
After watching just the first episode last night, I am really looking forward to the next two.
It will make you angry to find out that very little is dome by the government to shut these boiler room scammers down. They get a slap on the wrist and a fine and continue on with taking/conning money out of people who can't afford to give, but because they have a soft heart and think they are actually helping someone in their community, they give over and over.
I also didn't realize that they are operating all over America and not in some foreign country.
Head Full of Honey (2018)
I'm trying, really trying to watch this until the end.
I'm 30 minutes in and I just don't think I can keep on watching. I like the actors who are in this movie, but too much of it seems so contrived it makes me wince. Really, a man who obviously has the issues Nick's character has and his son is so dumb or self centered or whatever it is that he would go off home and leave his father thousand's a miles away with a caretaker that wouldn't even call him to let them know she had been fired and how bad his father was getting. And OMG, the guns. Who lets someone keep guns in this condition? The mom getting mad playing a game, where is her compassion? She is supposed to be some kind of professional and yet, she doesn't seem to know anything about her father-in-law's disease. And what kind of parents schedule a meeting about their child at school and don't have the time to actually be there. They are professionals, don't they know how to schedule their time? The movers, how could this be considered funny - it wasn't.
I had a feeling this movie was going to be "out there" when in the beginning, the little girl is on a train with her grandfather who obviously should not be on his own and they are going to another country. Really, the adults think this is a good idea. I admit I have no experience with this disease but this movie does take place in the current time, so absolutely no reason, these supposedly intelligent professional people would not be smart enough to do some research on how to handle someone with this disease. Also Nick's character seems to be pretty advanced into the disease. This just seems so far from reality it doesn't not work. Ok I'm done with my review and another 20 minutes has passed and no one in the movie is getting any smarter except the little girl. Time to find another movie to watch.
The Out-Laws (2023)
Just horrible
Saw this was trending and plot sounded like it would be funny, but it just wasn't. Talented cast, but not a one could save this turkey. I only managed about 30 minutes and just couldn't take anymore. How do such good actors sign on to do this crap. Has to be the $$$.
Do yourself a favor and find an old movie from the 1980's that has some good writers that know how to put together a sentence without throwing in dirty language every seventh word thinking it's funny. It's not. I'm really done with this review but still have another sixty four words. It's no good. It's no good. It's no good I'm done!
Arnold (2023)
New admiration for the man.
My husband and I watched all three episodes last night. It's one of the best documentaries I've seen. Very candid and we liked that the person being documented is actually the one doing the talking. He comes across as a very driven person, smarter than a lot people think he is. (Probably the accent and those action movies). He has worked really hard all his life invested his earning wisely. He gives a lot of credit to all the people who have helped him along the way. He actually says " Don't call me a self made man". I've had lots and lots of help". He covers in the three episodes, his early career in bodybuilding along with his relationship with his parents and brother growing up in Austria, his movie career and his political career. He made me believe that he is actually a pretty nice guy who has some flaws and owns up to some mistakes he has made and that he tries to do the right thing. If you are a fan, you will be even a bigger one and if you aren't a fan, you may be surprised more than once and become one.
A Tourist's Guide to Love (2023)
Just needed something light and fun to watch
I came across this by accident. Knew nothing about it beforehand but was tired of action, spy, big explosion CGI movies. Seems like there are lots and lots of those anymore.
It's been a rough week and I just wanted to relax and see a happy movie. This one delivered. No "big" story here but a sweet little romance between two people that were good people and treated everyone with kindness. Did I know how it would end, sure, but I didn't care because it was the experience that counts. I know nothing about Viet Nam except for all the "war" news I was exposed to in the 1960's-'70's. So it was a very pleasant experience to see the people represented as just regular people who were kind and happy. I understood the lead actor's remark that the Viet Nam war is just a very tiny part of their country's history.
I have not traveled much outside of the USA and haven't really ever been all that interested in doing so, but this movie made me realize I sure have missed a lot. I give it an 8 because it was entertaining, beautiful to watch and just what I needed tonight.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958)
Boring screaming match between characters who were not realistic or likable.
I was 14 when this movie came out in 1958 and I never saw it until now. I'd seen clips but never watched the entire movie.
It loses a lot compared to today's movies and actors who don't "over act" and think that screaming their lines in terrible southern accents is "real" acting. I almost turned it off after the first 15 minutes because it just seemed so staged (I know it's from a play) but many movies made from plays manage to avoid the staginess so apparent here. I decided that since I've heard about this movie most of my life, I should hang in there and see what all the fuss has always been about. I was glad when it was finally over. It was not entertaining. I've read quite a few of the glowing reviews on here and also the low ones. I tend to agree with the low ratings hence my 3 stars. Elizabeth was beautiful and Paul Newman was handsome but looks don't make up for over acting.
I'm thinking this would be a good movie to remake now. It wouldn't have to hide the homosexual tone of the movie, could have actors who can act without shouting their lines and avoid the sappy happy ending. I'm sure Tennessee Williams would approve. I'd watch the remake.
Cocaine Bear (2023)
My husband laughed so hard at this movie
We watched this movie tonight on a streaming service. My husband laughed so many times and that made it more entertaining to me. I think it will appeal more to men than women because of the type of humor. It's a really outrageous story and very very loosely (check out the 51 min documentary about it after you watch the movie) based on a true story. It will hold your interest just to find out the next crazy action with the bear and the humans. Spoiler, not everyone who dies, dies from the bear. If you like movies that are pretty preposterous then watch this. You won't be disappointed. 8 stars may be generous but if it makes my husband laugh, it gets a higher rating from me.
From Other Worlds (2004)
Quirky little Mo is that is surprisingly fun.
Fun quirky little movie with decent acting and interesting characters. Several actors I've seen before and didn't realize I had until the movie was over. Look for Robert Downey Sr in a small role and Melissa Leo. I've seen lots of less entertaining movies with really bad acting. This was one I'd never heard of but was pleasantly surprised by. I'd recommend it if you are looking for a fun movie that will keep you engaged to see how it's going to end.
I kept wondering whether to take it at face value. Took me awhile to decide what this movie really was, a spoof or a genuine comedy. It was t perfect but I did enjoy it.
A Very Sordid Wedding (2017)
Just stumbled upon looking for a comedy.
I was going thru movies looking for a comedy and thought I'd give this one a look. I liked the title and thought I'd check it out. I only recognized a couple of actors in it, but it did not disappoint. It was laugh out loud funny. So many movies I've tried to watch that just make me squirm and turn them off because they aren't funny and no one can actually act in them. This has some unforgettable characters and the actors are great. A little over the top at times, but still fun to watch. Id recommend if you want a Movie that will make you laugh and characters you would like to see again, the. Check this one out.
I Think We're Alone Now (2018)
Holes big enough to drive a car through
I gave it a 5 because I've seen so many much worse movies.
I had some of the same problems with the movie as other reviewers have mentioned. Sound on voices awful. Turned my TV up more than once so I could hear what they were saying only to be blasted out of my recliner by the music. Also thought it was dark and hard to see at times. I kept wondering why they didn't open the darn curtains and let in some light. But my biggest complaint is all the things that just didn't make sense at all. It obviously takes place in very current times, so with that conclusion - what about the power situation? There's no power in their town now, but whatever happened had to take place a couple of years prior based on them commenting on some canned goods being expired in the grocery store & canned good don't expire in a couple of months. So.... The power would not have just stopped because people in their town all died (when at the end, there is power in another town) and based on this and cell phones and the internet, then everything would have still been functioning for awhile after everyone died., So wouldn't the main character have had some knowledge that he wasn't the only survivor and it makes him out to be a loaner but he had a house & some family so he wasn't always that way. Why wouldn't he have tried contacting other survivors or going in search of some? Also. How in the world did the girl's "parents" find her, I mean really, how would they even know what direction to start? Then about the dog, if I'm right in figuring that the "event" had happened a couple of years before ( also evidenced by the bodies he was burying looking so light and that they might be mummified - which raises another question. Why did they mummify? Wouldn't they just rot? It looked to be a damp climate with a lake near. So back to the dog. How did it survive for a year or two? My husband said it ate its owners but even if they lasted long enough to feed it for a couple of years, it was locked in house. It would have died from dehydration long before. I don't like movies that expect us to believe just ordinary things don't count. Also, the end of the movie and what they were proposing just didn't fit the rest of the story at all.
The Haunting (1963)
No real scares
I guess I've just seen too many really scary horror movies that really did make me jump and hide my eyes and not be able to watch. This is not one of them. Just too dated to be scary.
Jerry & Marge Go Large (2022)
What a refreshing movie!
First new movie in a long long looonnngg time that I throughly enjoyed. Great actors playing believable characters, that you liked, and were just decent human beings. No guns, no sex, no CGI showing totally improbably stunts, no cheating husbands or wives, no child actors who were paying cute and only one bad guys that could be excused because he is just young and that you hope may have learned a lesson in being a decent person. Great story based on something that really happened. If you are tired of all the crap that's being put out by Hollywood and yearn for a good old fashioned movie with a wonderful story this is for you.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Very few likable characters.
I binge watched 8 episodes last night into early morning. Then I read a lot of reviews today and went online and saw a couple of interviews with the real Anna.
I pretty much agree with the majority of the reviewers who said the series was too long and too many side stories. I really couldn't find any character that I really liked and was rooting for. I did like Neff's boyfriend and I had sympathy for the attorney's wife and for the journalist's husband. I watched episode 9 this afternoon and found I was really disliking more and more the attorney, journalist and Anna as well as several other characters. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the point of the writer was that most people have some narcissistic tendencies and in this case, quite a few did. I could not see in the real interviews or the portrayal by Julia of Anna anything in the least charismatic about her. I also, as much as I like the actress, Julia, did not see very much similarity in her accent to the real Anna. Almost all the characters just came across as not anyone I would ever want to call my friend except maybe Neff and Kacy. Most characters to have very little scruples or honesty about themselves. Also could see no reaso for the several sex scenes as they didn't add anything to the plot. I gave it 5 starts because it was interesting story and I appreciated watching something without gratuitous violence and CGI.
The Lost City (2022)
Pretty much a remake of Romancing The Stone
Entertaining enough. Not great but ok way to spend a couple of hours forgetting about the real world.
If you haven't ever seen Romancing the Stone, you might want to check it out. It's a much better movie. More fun and better characters & well, just better.
West Side Story (2021)
Much grittier than the original version.
Just watch it a second time on cable. Saw first time in the theater. It was much better than I was expecting. I know the story very well as I have seen the original many times. This new version moved me more and brought me to tears. Some of the songs have been moved around in the story but they still resonate. Having seen the original multiple times, was hard at first to accept new actors. The second time watching I appreciated them more. The setting makes more sense in the new version. My only complaint is there is no close caption in English for all the Spanish used in the movie. I know some would say this makes it more authentic, but I feel I missed a lot by not being able to understand fully all the dialog. I will be watching again because the musical numbers are fantastic.
From (2022)
If you like seeing bloody gory dead bodies including Children?
The premise of the story is interesting however the bloody gory dead bodies are just too much. Story is slow and no one explains anything for quickly. I like Harold, the lead actor. He owns any scene he is in. We watched four episodes but thinking I don't care enough about any of the characters to stick it out. Just dreary and depressing.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
We are senior citizens and love this movie
Many of the reviewers remark this movie mainly appeals to the under 30 set, but it's one of my husband & my favorite movies. We have watched numerous times. We are not into video games or Japanese comics but we know what we like and this movie is just so creative and fun to watch. The actors are all spot on and the director was great and whoever edited this movie was a genius. What a movie is supposed to be pure entertainment.
Dinner for Schmucks (2010)
Gets better with every viewing
A funny movie. Great performances by all the cast. It gets funnier every time I watch it. Notice more each time and the actors are spot on. Actually made me laugh out loud and that doesn't happen often.
