Baroness Von Sketch Show (2016)
Hilarious, and a little too accurate.
So funny, love it. Very few things make me actually laugh out loud, this show is a hilarious win.
90% of the bad reviews are from dudes, what a surprise.
Lucifer (2016)
Terrifically watchable. But how on earth did they do it!?
Terrifically watchable. How on earth did they do it!?
Lucifer should -absolutely- not be on my list of musts. Yet, I haven't missed a single episode. And then can't wait for the next one. What!? This one has really grabbed hold of and kept my interest. And I'm easily bored and hyper-critical, very very few shows manage to meet my standards.
This plots been done so many times before, in both television and movies, that it should be growing moss(even the twists are worn out). Though,I have to say the show has a partly episodic nature(of course), it does have a good, strong story-line that consistently continues throughout.
Characters are so clichéd, it's criminal. And I'm hooked on every single one's ongoing story line.
The way they've tried to show us Lucifer's inner thoughts, feelings, inner struggles, is an equally trite and familiar character. A lazy writer's narrative plot tool. But I love it, can't wait see how that subplot continues.
The main actor's British accent sounds unbelievable fake. It's utterly charming. (This one was a mystery at first. I knew that Tom Ellis was from Britain - what was going on? After listening to a few interviews and hearing his real voice - he's just really hamming it up more than a few notches for the show. ( Some might think it's because he actually has a Welsh accent. But he was just born in Wales, he didn't grow up there)
The set designs are beyond cheesy. And yet, their quality is obviously very high - it's easy to see that money and attention was spent here.
I could go on and on...
---I gave this an 8, but honestly I'm not sure what to rate it. This show has me completely baffled. Why do I like it so much?
Legion (2017)
30 incredible seconds in, and I was addicted. BUT.
Right from the start it grabs you.*
Pros: Fantastic. Cons: Last 20 seconds go slightly wrong.
tl;dr.....
Pros: -Excellent superhero origin plot. -Superior acting. -Managed to pack a lot of character development in to just the pilot. -Skillful Editing - for virtually the entire length, with one exception. (see con list). -High production value, they went all out and it shows. -The gorgeous visuals. -Beautifully built and chosen sets. Suitable to every scene. (Although living on the west coast of B.C., Canada - I can spot a Vancouver film location immediately. (Really, it's just more amusing to any one familiar with the 'Vancouver Stands in For Any City in the World' phenomenon.) -Special effects are sooo close to being absolutely perfect, the realism is is so nearly flawless, with the one exception I mentioned above.(see con list).
*I have an almost unfortunately strong eye for even the slightest cartoon-y detail of computer generated effects. It constantly ruins shows or movies for me (unless it's done on purpose).
Cons:The end scene. Last 20 seconds or so... -Action in the end was just a little too drawn out and choppy - I get that they were trying to portray the adrenalin of the moment, but it just doesn't work. Which is weird, because everything else was right on the nose. -For some reason the special effects suddenly become more cartoon like. -Very last 20 seconds takes a surprisingly cheese-tastic turn. -Every actor was completely appropriate to their roles, they fit. Except one...who shows up in the last few seconds of the end scene. And unfortunately looks to have a heavy role in the future. I can only hope that this person has the chops to stretch to the part.
Big hopes for this one - that the quality remains so high, and continues to hold my rapt attention. BUT, that ending could foretell of unsatisfactory things to come.
* You may be wondering if I had to use a thesaurus for this one. Yes. Yes I did. Ran out of words for a rave review. Ha.
Powerless (2016)
Alan Tudyk - Jewel in a Crown of S**t
This is a cancelled show, waiting to happen. Pros: -Alan Tudyk is hilarious,(as usual). -No laugh track.
Cons: -The rest of the cast fade in to a blandness that takes a painful effort to watch (even Danny Pudi). -With the promise of such an interesting idea for a show, the plot is(at best) utterly boring. -Some of the sets look so pathetically cheap, it's startling. Even with the multi camera shooting, the main set has the appearance of a 'made for studio audience' show.
I was really looking forward to this one. What a disappointment.A tragedy for anyone who wastes minutes of their precious life on this dog of a show. At least Tudyk's getting a pay cheque.
