Game Changer (2019)
The Personalities Are Make or Break
Obviously by my rating, I'm a fan. But the entire Dropout streaming service is built on the personalities of their cast (and guests (who are usually personal friends of the cast)). If you like character-based gags and "wacky hijinks", this might be for you.
However, there's a learning curve. You must figure out who your favorite recurring cast members are. One appearance in one episode of something doesn't give a great impression.
As far as this show in particular is concerned, there are really great episodes and then there are episodes I probably won't watch again. But the premise is intriguing enough that I want to keep watching and see if my favorite cast members show up.
Yes, the game show is "scripted" to some extent in that there's always some gimmick that the crew is making sure goes as planned, but contestants are always kept in the dark. And as for the host, this is his passion project. Sam is also the CEO of the company and was insistent that he host this show.
Snack vs. Chef (2022)
Best Hosts on the Planet
I love how the hosts look straight at the prompter (which must be slightly left of the camera) and say their lines with no inflection whatsoever. Especially the woman, who shines on her own with flabbergasting ad libs like "It's hard to choose between two good friends" and "Wow, that looks hard" Strokes of genius! Never in my life did I ever think I would see such awkwardness and discomfort. The acting is so impeccable that I almost think that this how is her ACTUAL behavior, but that would be impossible as no one would hire people like that to host a competition show.
Oh, and there's some cooking and stuff. That's good too.
Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House of Fun (2020)
Whatever this is, I can't stop watching.
The fact that I don't know how to explain the show at all is telling of why I love it so much. Not everyone is going to find this funny. Sketch comedy is hard to find nowadays, so this Australian trio's absurdism where nothing makes any sense is very refreshing and reminds me of Monty Python's Flying Circus...with more music.
The Movies That Made Us (2019)
More Annoying than Usual
I could barely stand the narrator and editing of "The Movies That Made Us". In this sister series, it's so much worse. Words are taken out of context from interviews and the narrator here is telling this real-life story like it's a story written for 7 year olds. Some things don't have to be explained word-for-word! While a great concept, the execution is pretty poor. It's baby's first documentary about moviemaking.
Smash Mouth: All Star (1999)
An Intellectual Sensation
Where do I begin? Ever wanted all 5 of your senses exploding with sensitivity at the same time? 'All Star' provides a social commentary that proceeds its time and allows listeners to fully understand joy. Before 'All Star', I was just a lonely girl looking for a little fun. Without a friend in the world, I was forced to find a new one. Now I'm the Queen of Mars, I was invisible on Earth. But then I took the magic portal to Mars to give me some self worth!
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson (2019)
Hilarious Nonsense
I don't like leaving reviews all that much, but I just felt like I have to put one for the show, this is one of the best new sketch shows in a while. I have re-watched it four times now and I laugh at every joke every single time! Maybe it's not for some people due to its seemingly random, out-of-place jokes, but for me that's what makes it work. It reminds me of older parody films like Airplane!
Bring the Funny (2019)
Funny is NOT brought
I had some high expectations for this. But to be blunt, none of the acts that they bring on are funny*. There is so much editing that it just absorbs all the comedy and throws it into a fire. Not to mention, why is Chrissy Teagen on this show? She even says on the show that she's not funny!
*actually, the show was funny after 5 beers.
