The Boss (2016)
1/10
Terrible Waste of Time and Money
20 April 2016
I can't believe I let my friend drag me into watching this .... atrocious film.

This movie relies on ugly, immoral jokes that demean and pigeonhole people into old fashioned stereotypes. Making fun of lesbians? Seriously who does that anymore?! Also, if the jokes are ugly and cheap to begin with, forcing child actors to say them doesn't make the jokes any prettier. Slang terms and vulgar words do not automatically equal humor. Far from it.

Absolutely tasteless.

The Boss lacked subtlety, and I found myself comparing Melissa McCarthy's role to Donald Trump, and not in a good way, mind you. There was nothing funny about the film---the violent attempt at slapstick humor failed. It was badly timed and came off rather flat. No one was likable except Peter Dinklage's role. Even then, he is shoved into a stereotype about funny midgets. What are we? 8 year old children? That was the last time I ever laughed simply because someone was shorter than average.

There is a way to mix violence/vulgarity to create a comedy (See Deadpool, Hot Fuzz, etc.), but The Boss definitely never even took off. Just pure failure.

Hated the film. I don't recommend wasting your brain cells on this.

Zootopia (2016)
10/10
Excellent Film
19 March 2016
I saw the trailer a few days ago, and figured it was just another "feel- good" film for little children. But then, everyone started telling me "wow Zootopia was such a good movie!"

So I got curious.

If you haven't seen the movie yet, I implore you to check it out. This movie came out during a very relevant time for USA. Disney managed to take a hugely complicated, controversial subject and show a way out. Even a young child will understand the message upon viewing.

This is truly a masterpiece, and I am in tears from watching it. The cinematography was top notch. The plot and screen writing were great and unexpected (for me). The message rings truer than anything else I've heard.

This movie is clearly made by people who care. So take your friend or family to see this film, regardless of his/her age. Zootopia is an important film to watch with an open mind.

Sin Nombre (2009)
6/10
Failed to fully deliver
8 March 2016
After watching El Norte (a great film, by the way), I wanted to find more films about an immigrant's journey to the U.S. Upon finding Sin Nombre, I wanted to like it. I was determined to watch it with an open mind and a serious attitude . . . and the movie turned out decent, for the most part, but something essential was missing.

Soul.

Before tagging me as "sentimental" and skipping the rest of my review, understand that a film about people's suffering needs well developed characters who truly embody the reality they represent. Sayra did not. I found her and a couple other characters to be not quite believable. Their struggles were obviously seen from an outsider's perspective who only detailed the violence, and not even the full violence. I felt alienated watching this film, a feeling I didn't get whilst watching El Norte. El Norte had its share of plot holes, but it delivered in terms of emotional impact. It made me truly care. This film showed the violence, but forgot to treat its characters as actual people.

The movie also came off as a typical thriller. Good guys, bad guys, bad guy gone good, etc. Where is the life? I wanted something that explored the emotional journey more. The cinematography and music are top notch, and the tattoos were a nice touch. However, this film did not seem genuine. It seemed very fabricated. The actors themselves were believable. It was the script that put me off.

However, I did really enjoy seeing the journey of the youngest major character of the film. It was chilling to think about.
