It's a Hap-Hap-Happy Day (1941)
Gabby goes camping with the Mayor.
In 1939, Fleischer Studios released the movie "Gulliver's Travels". In that movie, Gabby is the know-it-all town crier for the town/nation of Lulliput. Following the movie, the Fleischer brothers used the character Gabby eight more times between 1940-1941. In "It's a Hap-Hap-Happy Day", Gabby catches the Mayor of Lilliput getting ready to go camping by himself. Gabby decides to tag along and causes oh so much trouble. You see, Gabby thinks he knows best about everything, and it's the poor Mayor that is in for a rough time. Gabby pitches tent about as well as I do. Then there's this moose that Gabby runs afoul of. And a woodpecker. I think you get the idea. Max and Dave Fleischer lost their studio in 1942 and that was it for Gabby. One movie and eight cartoons later, and it was all over for the hapless town crier of Lulliput. This cartoon can be found on several public domain DVDs and VHS tapes. Some of the other Gabby cartoons are; "King for a Day", "All's Well", "Fire Cheese", "Swing Cleaning", and "Two for the Zoo". Enjoy!
Swing Cleaning (1941)
Gabby cleans the Castle, well he tries at least.
Another fine Gabby cartoon from the Fleischer brothers; Max and Dave. This time around, Gabby shows the staff of Lulliput Castle the best way to clean the dusty old castle. Maybe you need some back ground into this character Gabby. You see, Gabby is the town crier of Lulliput, and he tends to think he knows best about everything. Anything you can do, Gabby can do better! Naturally, Gabby screws everything up and make a bigger mess in the process! Poor Gabby, only 8 cartoons plus the movie "Gulliver's Travels" (1939) were made using this little guy. Fleischer Studios was taken over by Paramount Pictures in 1942 to whom they owned money. The new studio, renamed Famous Studios, continued making Popeye cartoons and the Superman cartoons, but alas, Gabby was forgotten. The voice of Gabby is done by Pinto Colvig, best known as the voice of Disney's Goofy and sometimes Pluto. Final note, this cartoon is in the public domain.
King for a Day (1940)
Great Gabby Cartoon.
Gabby was created by Fleischer Studios in 1939 for the movie "Gulliver's Travels" and released by Paramount Pictures. The Fleischer brothers, Max and Dave, then used Gabby in 8 more short cartoons from 1940-1941. Fleischer Studios became Famous Studios in 1942 and that was it for Gabby. Never the star Popeye the Sailor was. Gabby was simply forgotten by Famous Studios. In this cartoon, my second favorite of the eight, Gabby the know-it-all town crier of Lulliput has a letter for the King. The letter says someone is coming to "shoot" the King. Terrified, the King changes places with Gabby for the day. Get the title now? Gabby finds out his fate and quickly panics! Watch for the sword play in this cartoon. Great cartoon, one of my favorites. Find a good print and enjoy!
Fire Cheese (1941)
Best Gabby Cartoon!
Here it is! Number 1 of the 8 Gabby cartoons that were made by the Fleischer brothers from 1940-1941. It's Gabby as a firefighter, well kinda. The know-it-all town crier of Lulliput tries his best to help the fire grow! One great gag right in the middle of this cartoon is when Gabby breaks down the door of the house and races into the burning house with a pail of water in hand. Naturally, the idiot Gabby pours the water on a potted plant and then puts a log on the fire in the fireplace, then leaves the house still in flames! Great gag. I laugh every time i see it. If you like this cartoon, check out "King for a Day", my second favorite Gabby cartoon. Poor Gabby, no more Gabby cartoons were made after 1941 as far as I can see. Shame really:( Gabby's first appearance is in the movie "Gulliver's Travels" (1939).
All's Well (1941)
One of 8 Gabby Cartoons Made
This is one of only eight Gabby cartoons made by Fleischer Studios following the release of the movie "Gulliver's Travels" (1939) which is Gabby's first appearance. Gabby is the know-it-all town crier of Lulliput. In this cartoon, Gabby tries to diaper a baby. Very basic plot. Not my favorite Gabby cartoon. Check out "Fire Cheese" or "King for a Day" or the best of Gabby. When the Fleischer brothers lost their studio to Paramount in 1942, Fleischer Studios became Famous Studios and Gabby was never used again. Sad actually. Gabby is my favorite cartoon character. I know 7 of the 8 Gabby cartoons that were made are in the public domain and maybe even number eight is also. Finding a good public domain copy is hard though. But Gabby is worth it!
