House of the Dragon: King of the Narrow Sea (2022)
unpredictable is always good
Cliches are down, while unpredictable was the key word for this episode. Hats down for the writers, also the cinematography is top notch. I really hope they can keep up the high standards they set for this show.
So far, it is much more engaging than the first season of Game of Thrones and (something that I really like) the story is compact, not following 1000 characters and plots all over the place, as GOT did while failing miserably to give most of all those story arcs a proper ending.
GoT had indeed very good cast and likable characters, HotD is still to establish undeniable characters for their roles, but they are on the right path in my opinion.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
All I wanted from a Jurassic movie and more
Like I said in the title, this movie was all I wanted from a Jurassic movie and more.
In a world where a movie like the new Dune, where you watch for 10 mins a scene where nothing is happening, just someone staying on the bad, starring into the abyss than moving a little inside the room while the music is literally putting you to sleep, is considered art and great cinematography, I am not surprised that a movie like Jurassic world is not beeing liked.
We had crazy cool dinosaurs scenes, likable characters, chases, more chases, more dinosaurs. I mean, what the @$#@# do someone expect from a Jurassic movie? I loved every second of it at the cinema, while falling asleep at a movie like Dune (I loved the Linch version a lot) with zero character dev., zero imersion, empty useless scenes and "special effects" of sand and more sand.
I am smart enough to love movies like Shawshank Redemption or Jurassic World Domination, different movies, different genres, take them for what they are set to do.
I am curious what people expected from this new Jurassic movie, psychological drama, Oscar wining scenario? It seems that they wanted unpredictable script, apparently a predictable scenario means a movie is trash. The old Jurassic movies where very unpredictable: the animlas escape always, the good guys are getting chased and survive every time while the bad guys got eaten. Simple and fun fantasy with dinosaurs. That's all, great visuals, cool action. That's the genre... Old school movie for old school fans. I really hope the next Jurassic movie is not some psychological drama in slow motion in order to be enjoyed by the new movie fans...
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 7: In the Name of Honor (2022)
Robert Rodriguez should direct shows for lil kids only
The title says it all.
This episode was a huge missed opportunity.
The directing destroyed what could have been a great episode.
The action scenes and the story telling are childish and a lot more naive than the animated series Clone Wars and Rebels. The cartoons had a lot more mature content with drama and good story telling.
Dune (2021)
Way too long and boring
I was falling asleep through the entire movie. In 2 hours and a half the movie never actually start. Most scenes are dragging for an uncesessary ammount of time. It's not suspense and it's definitely not a psychological movie, nor "an art" movie just because of the long and way too often slow mo scenes. It's just boring and bad.
The cinematography is average at best and the character devellopment is suffering because all of the unnecessary scenes where literrally nothing is happening. A lot or good actors having nothing to act except exchanging some wooden lines. There is a total lack of emotion and every character interaction feels fake.
I read the books when I was young and I also saw the older Dune version. Big budget and better filming technology are not enough to make a better movie. Not at all.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Literally Unwatchable
As a huge fan of fiction and historical movies, aswell of huge CGI bombastic movies, I considered this movie literally unwatchable. After the first scenes I admit, I just scrolled through the movie till the end.
I can not even begin to say how wrong everything feels in this movie. Prolly a huge budget and effort were spent here and that is a shame because from the first opening scenes alone you feel like watching a big budget add for a brand of aftershave or man productis and not an actual movie.
The Outpost (2018)
Good start due to good support actors
It is a mistery how bad this show turned out to be in time, with the final season beeing a complete mess that seemed scripted and directed by complete beginers.
Also, instead of some great support roles that we got in the first seasons, we are getting really bad casting in time.
Robyn Malcolm had a huge performance, also Imogen Waterhouse and Andrew Howard broght a lot of value to the show. They all left leaving the show to drag with average and bad actors (some of them I don t think are even actors, but some random persons picked randomly) and prolly the original directors and writers also left at one point, didn t check that, but that must be the case.
Anyay, It had potantial and there are some enjoyable moments in the first half od the show.
Tom and Jerry (2021)
Basen only on trailer I thought the movie will be a disaster
The movie is just amazing! As a 43 years old adult I couldn t help smiling for the entire movie. The human actors did such a great job and Tom and Jerry felt like Tom and Jerry all the way. Based on trailer I thought it will be just a mindless riff raff betweeb T and J and started watching the movie with low expectiations. Instead, I loved the movie from the first moment till the end. Such a special movie it was. I feel sorry for the critics and everyone else that could not enjoy this. I also think that a lot of ppl are rating this movie only based on the trailer. Go watch it, you will not regret!
Star Wars: The Bad Batch: Cornered (2021)
Omega is destroying this show...
All I can say is that Omega character is a desaster, bad design, bad voice acting, annoying and distracting. And I am one of those who liked Ashoka right from the start...
Star Wars: The Bad Batch: Cut and Run (2021)
Rambo aka Hunter
The short fight scenes at the end saved this episode. Hunter had some badass moves, Rambo style, he's killing it. I really like this Rambo character type they are creating. Also Wreker had a funny as hell fight scene.
The rest it supposed to be more like an emotional episode consolidating the bond between Omega and the team.
Rest of the plot is just typical Star Wars episode, go to a planet, do stuff, leave.
Prolly not a 10 if we compare it with the greatest Clone Wars and Rebels episoded but I am so happy for these series and I embrace with joy any moments spent in these series created by Dave.
His Dark Materials: Theft (2020)
It is geting worse and worse
A series with such a great start that just got dumber and dumber. Season 2 is a total mess, just a story telling without any soul, cringe acting, cringe dialogues, cringe script. As an adult I find it impossible to take it seriously anymore. I am at the point of giving up following this series. The lady with the monkey and the church guys are the only ones that kept me invested so far. Lyra's actress is a good actress, but there is nothing she can do with such sinister directing and dialogues.
No CGI can replace bad producers unfortunately..
At this point, it became just a dumb show for kids, there are no layers anymore, just a dumb story unfolding.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Shattered (2020)
When things feel so tight they might snap, that's tension!
This episode is about the most dramatic moment of the entire Star Wars universe. The tension is rising, building up, the first part of the episode was insane. The music, the directing, everything here made us feel this organic sense of gravity. Maul fighting scene was another brilliant moment of the episode.
Dave and everyone else in charge here must be the ones to take care of the next big screen movies! This episode alone brought more emotion and drama than Disney's last big screen trilogy.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Old Friends Not Forgotten (2020)
OMG! Star Wars feelz on steroids!
This is Star Wars on steroids! The cinematography is incredible!
I hope Dave gets to write and direct the next 3 Star Wars movies!
All Hail King Julien: Exiled (2017)
Most underrated cartoon series ever
The first seasons from All Hail KJ were such a surprise, but this season that is actually a season between 4 and 5 of the original series is mind blowing.
There was so much humor and creativity and heart put into this series, I don't know where to begin. From the writers to the voice actors to the animators and directors, this is a work of art. I thank you all of them for creating this show and I hope they got the credit and reward they deserved for all this work. I can't wait to see now on Netflix the last season and I hope one day the show will be back.
Poldark: Episode #5.7 (2019)
One of my favorite episodes
The cinematography is breathtaking in this episode. I can t stop to pause the movie and watch the beautiful shots and camera angles. Amazing editing and directing.
I know the plot was a little forced at the beginning of this season, but things started to become much better now the season is ending.
I really hope for a next season while I am sad to see some negativity from some fans of the show because of this season.
Siren (2018)
I wish I can like it
I'll say this from the start. The lead casting is great. They really got this right. She is so believable in this siren role. The setting is also right. The story? Not bad, can offer potential for a good plot. But the other actors, the marine guy and her gf, oh man, it's like they took some random guys from the street and made them acting right away in this movie. Wooden acting, just... bad.... so bad, it s painful to watch. Also the bad script and poor production are really destroying the movie. The dialogue lines are kept at the most basic level, every scene seems so fake and not fully developed. Also, the production guys, hello, you really thought that using an overmixed and overproduced pop vocalize singing with some orchestration on the background is really fit for a siren song? Really? Their singing should be something more raw, simple and sincere, touching the listeners maybe at a mental level...
Anyway, the lead role and the story with such a potential is the only way I kept watching till ep.3, I hope you guys learn step by step about film making and manage to fix this show on the way or maybe in season 2, but I am afraid that there will be no season 2 if the shows keeps it this way.
I'll wait to see how this show will evolve because I really would like to like it... And than I ll give it a rating...
Star Wars Rebels: Family Reunion - and Farewell (2018)
As good as the first original trilogy
Incredible ending for this series. It started not so good, a lot more childish than Clone Wars, but this ending arc was amazing. Get the guy who took care of the Rebels and Clone wars to take care also of the big screen ones. Amazing characters, crying at the end of the both series while the new big screen ones had no emotion and so poor character development. Even the secondary characters were better created than any of the big screen ones.
I am so happy for the window left opened at this ending. It could make an amazing return to see Ashoka and Sabine working together. Also Hera, Zeb and Rex are such amazing characters. Seeing them on the big screen would be huge, but I am happy also to see a new series. :)
Knightfall: Do You See the Blue? (2018)
Thank you History channel!
As I wrote in a review of the entire show, I enjoyed it all the way and took it for what it is, a show where the story is just a mean to recreate the world of templars, describing very well "the feeling of an era".
This last episode was a nice ending to this show, with potential to continue with a second season. I am not a scholar or very passionate about history facts but I have the feeling that everything they did here was well documented and done as much as possible to recreate those times, from the settings to the social relations and customs in those times. Anything but the story which is a 100% fantasy, but than again, they intended the story to be just a support for recreating a historical time.
As a conclusion, I would love to see a season 2 and more such shows made, even with not so big budgets and fuss as some main stream fantasy/history shows.
Thank you History channel!
Knightfall (2017)
A nice mix of history and fiction
My advice for those who want to give this show a chance is to take it as it is, a history channel production about the time of templars, kings and popes and not some big production as Game of thrones or even Vikings.
Does it recreate well and beautifully the feeling of that era? Yes. It does it very well and for me this is most important.
Is is cheesy sometimes and based on a fictional story? Yes and yes, but than again, the creators didn't intend to present a real story and used a fictional script just as a mean to present the feeling of an era.
This is what this show is about, describing "the feeling of an era". I trully appreciate this effort and I hope ppl will understand this and support it and maybe we can see more such shows made by history channel or even a season 2 of Knightfall.
Peace!
Twin Peaks: The Return: Part 8 (2017)
This is not Twin Peaks
This is not Twin Peaks! This episode is totally disrespect for the viewers. Impossible to watch if you are a sane person. Some may say this is art. It is not! It is just a director throwing crap at viewers and laughing thinking of their reaction. Maybe he has some frustrations and he is now intentionally completely destroying Twin Peaks. If you are to make another season, please get another director, really... Zero connection with what we loved about the old Twin Peaks, zero connection with even the new story they started, just a bunch of ... crap. I can t even describe what happened in this episode.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
Bad reviews of this movie make me lose hope in humanity
I just saw it in a very good 3d cinema. After reading so much bad reviews I thought the movie will be worst than stranger tides. Instead I had the huge surprise to experience a real cinema spectacle. The cinematography is incredible, the acting is incredible. The story? Critics complain about the story? The story was always kind of stupid and childish. So what? I don't care. If you go to Pirates of the Caribbean and expect to see deep complex stories and psychological elements you are at the wrong movie. Go instead watch Oscar winners with black, gay, slaves, etc being abused.
The worst thing that can happen is that all this negativity can influence the box office and we might not see another one. It would be so sad.
ps: I will go watch it again several times. It's that kind of movie!
Once Upon a Time: The Song in Your Heart (2017)
better directed than any other episode
Big surprise this episode was. Not being a fan of musicals, I enjoyed it a lot. The idea behind the music in this episode was that music is a kind of magic that can stand to evil, so all the singing did not felt off the context if I may say so.
The musical scenes were directed great, comparing with the very bad and cringe directing of the entire show. The composers did a great job. And some of the actors were amazing in the singing scenes. Snow and Charming are naturals, their performance was spot on. Hook did a great job also, his musical scene together with the charming's one were better in any way than any scene from Lalala Land.
The other actors did well, Gold refused to sing in a funny way, Regina had a crazy number, best episode of this show. If a season 7 will be happening, wish for more of such musical episodes.
Beauty and the Beast (2017)
I feel sorry for those disliking this movie
I just saw it in a very good 3d cinema.
I was not expecting much, given the director.(The Twilight "saga" was horrible in my opinion).
Big surprise, I loved the movie from the start. The cinematography is fantastic. The cast is great, the music (the original themes are here), the choreography of the dance scenes, the surroundings, the CGI, everything is just how it should be in such a story.
Some complained about the Beast;s face, he s quite OK, he's a beast after all, not a likable fellow. And they tried to make it a live version of the beast from the cartoon.
Others complained about the cast for Belle. She did a good job, the only problem is that she can't sing. Her singing is the only down side of the movie, but I could pass this aspect very easy.
Some complained about the gay scenes. Those are incredibly hilarious. You have to be a complete imbecile to be offended by those.
Some complained that the movie is too much alike the original cartoon. In a different case, they would have been upset that the movie is altering the story.
Speaking of the casting, everyone was great, but Gascon was maybe the best cast of the movie.
Watch it on a good 3d cinema and I hope you'll enjoy this movie that was applauded at the end in my cinema. Long time since I witnessed applause at the end of a movie.
The Great Wall (2016)
There are many legends about The Great Wall, this is one of them...
I just saw it in Romania in a good 3d cinema. The movie tells a legend. And it tells it so beautifully! The cinematography is breathtaking and for all the duration I was more than a movie spectator, I felt part of that legend, a character from that story, present among the troops defending the wall. If a movie succeeds in delivering such an experience, the rest is not important anymore.
In this point, I don t care anymore about plot holes or historical inaccuracies, because I came to cinema to see a fantasy, a Chinese legend with monsters and heroes. And there I was, in a war story, set in a different world, filled with amazing elements of the old Chinese culture, surrounded by exceptional warriors, beautiful landscapes and bloodthirsty monsters. I am very saddened to see the negativity among critics and public surrounding this movie. Complaining about historical inaccuracies or being racist about the mix of races is so misplaced. I hope people will go see it and ignore the bad criticism and prejudices about it.
Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)
Felt like a video game
Have you ever watch on youtube the story/movie of a video game that fans make sometimes, where they add together in chronological order all the cinematics of that game? That was the feeling that this movie gave me.
The cinematic was not that bad, I still like the Gothic/gloomy atmosphere of the Underworld movies which was preserved also in this one. But the big problem of it was it complete lack of soul and the video game script. Predictable and boring, it felt like watching an adventure show/game for kids.
Wooden acting, not credible characters, even Kate and Charles Dance felt like they were bored of this. Laura Puler as Semira was interesting while Theo James as David aka the next vampire leader was a disaster. Zero credibility as a vampire, he can fit better in a TV show like Melrose Place. Same thing can be said about all the other support actors playing the vampires/lycans. They seemed a bunch of goth hipsters (the vampires) and drunk tir drivers (the lycans).
You would expect of epic battles with incredible choreography between the vampires and lycans. Wrong. Long and boring with very bad stunts and lazy choreography. One exception for the fight between Kate and Super Mario which was not that bad.
The CGI was worst than usual. I saw today earlier in the same cinema the movie Fantastic Beasts and where to find them and omg, that was some bad ass CGI with soooooo many fantastic animals and wizardy. Here, they only have to do few scenes with credible lycans. In all UW movies the lycans look and move so stiff, they really look like very cheep CGI. That was absolutely zero need for making this movie in 3d, nothing worth seeing in 3d here except Kat s ass covered in black leather.
I hope they will do a better casting for the next UW series, hire better writers, better director, better choreographers and ofc keep Kate. Invest some money to teach Theo James how to play drama and be fit for this role as a vampire leader or replace him.
In conclusion such a missed opportunity for a large scale confrontation between vampires clans and lycan clans. Should have been epic...
I saw video games about vampires like Kain/Raziel series with incredible lore/drama and storytelling, maybe the creators should try take some inspiration from those...
Ice Age: Collision Course (2016)
You really must be a bad person if you don't enjoy this movie...
I just saw it. As a 39 years old I enjoyed this movie so much! The big surprise was right from the first minutes when I recognized the voice of Neil Degrasse Tyson. The scientific explanations he delivers through his character in this movie are incredible hilarious. I literally had tears in my eyes from so much laughing.
The movie is fun and very entertaining. I really don t understand the bad critics and the low note on IMDb. What are ppl expecting from such a movie? It s a cartoon with talking prehistoric animals where mammoths are friends with slots and tigers... Everything was funny as hell. What is wrong with you ppl? I get it, the old Jungle book was a great cartoon, Up was an incredible and emotional cartoon made by Pixar, but Ice Age is something else. I don t want drama and tears and complex morals from Ice Age, I want to feel like a kid and laugh and I did that. And I laughed even more than a kid because as an adult I can understand the astrophysics and science parody from this movie which was presented by no one else than professor Tyson....
Ending the review here, I know I am not good at reviews but I had to write these thoughts after I saw all the negativity surrounding this movie...
