Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)
This is the beyond awful
I am perplexed by all the good reviews here, a more suspicious mind might suspect some kind of scam...
This film was horrific for all the wrong reasons, a dead at birth script of such dullness that was only matched by the actors attempts to kill it even more; everyone seemed to be on tranquillisers, lurching around like Frankensteins' monster.
The story arc just did not make sense either, just random cause and effect and illogical consequences... The director must have another day job and lets hope he returns to it ASAP.
As for Vince Vaughn, this attempt at playing it straight is maybe his most laughable role yet.
I want my 2 hours back!
The Leftovers (2014)
It scares me that I might never have found this show
I can to this show via a circuitous route and a great deal of chance and remember watching the beginning and thinking "if that brat does not shut up I am turning this off!"
So glad I did not.
I just finished a binge watch of the 3 series and am left with feeling bereft and happy in bitter- sweet confusion. It is full of flawed and often annoying characters you end up forgiving and it ends so well considering shows that plow this vein often come up short.
It also has a wonderful and occasionally bizarre soundtrack with a sardonic humour to match.
I imagine going back over it sooner than later, each series was like something totally new, there is a shift from beginning to end that could almost work as 3 separate shows but they all tie together so well, like a real journey... and that ending... Jesus...
Cairo Time (2009)
Great imagery but...
I admit I have so far only watched half of this film, because I found it so flat as to be narcoleptic rather than just soporific.
I often love slow paced films (I run a film group and the last film was 2046) but when the acting is so torpid and the story full of incongruous details I loose patience and no amount of decent cinematography can save the day.
Juliette Grant's character irritated the hell out of me, I can't work out if it because she is a clichéd character or because she captured too well people who are infuriating I am sure that is not the directors Intention, so either way it's a fail for me.
Ritoru foresuto: Fuyu/Haru (2015)
A girl grows, A girl cooks, and maybe your world won't feel the same ever again...
This is actually 2 films and the second part (Winter/Spring) is my favourite.
Most definitely one of my most loved films ever, I expect quite a few people will not get it and indeed I am shocked how little attention it has garnered.
It continues to haunt me now, weeks after, and after several viewings, it created such a slow burning set of emotions that even now I feel a lump in my chest when I think about... Just wonderful.
I am becoming a kind of disciple maybe, torn between trying to get as many people to see it and yet also fearing that most people may not get it, maybe I am in such a place right now that is resonates for me, while for others it just falls flat.
Don't watch if you need action and violence and sex, or a definite story with neatly tied up conclusions, though I found the ending satisfying and was enchanted by the traditional dancing.
What more is there to say, that would not needs hours or acres of screen space?
