Napoleon (2023)
Complete Rubbish
A great actor like Joachin Phoenix did not lose his American accent for this important film. In Gladiator he spoke with a British accent, so we know he can do it. The music in this film is terrible. At one point I distinctly heard an electric bass, something that surely didn´t help create a mood of late 18th century France. Otherwise the music reminded me of Native American Indian chants, like Dances With Wolves. Completely out of place here. Sometimes it´s better to have no music, like in real life. As for the acting: IMO the script didn´t leave any space for it. The characters speak their lines but there is no room for interpretation. The result is a film that is completely boring.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Where are the real actors?
Of course the 3D effects are good here, although I prefer the original Avatar. There's something about the new version that seems too clinical visually. There is a story but it doesn't grab the viewer. When watching this 3 hour epic I found myself wondering how much longer it would drag on. The biggest problem for me was the lack of real actors. Of course the voices of prominent actors were used but in the original Avatar film the viewer could actually see most of them. In "The Way of Water" we see mostly computer generated Avatars. After a while this becomes boring because these creatures look very alike.
Bonanza: Ride the Wind (1966)
Another Cliche Where The Indians Are The Bad Guys
I started watching this classic episode of Bonanza which was so popular in the 60´s. At first it was a lot of fun to see the actors again, even though the makeup and lighting were obviously cheap by today´s standards. It was especially interesting to see De Forrest Kelly playing a drunken journalist. As the story progresses there are confrontations with Indians (Native Americans) who are portrayed as savages who will scalp any rider they catch crossing their land. One of the main actors, Victor Jory, tries to present the Indians with a treaty and is killed and sent back on horseback to his people. What follows is an all out assault by the whites on the Indians, resulting in many dead. Even Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene) joins in the massacre. Forget Wounded Knee. I can´t believe that US Television could produce such a terrible distortion of history. Shame on you!
The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson (2021)
Nothing New
Despite the hype I was disappointed with this film. It´s so full of cliches and has a weak script. The worst thing is the music: electric guitar? This is supposed to be the 19th century. I don´t think electric guitar was invented then. It´s like Tarantino copying spaghetti Westerns. Where´s the originality?
Mildred Pierce (2011)
Started out good BUT then Episode 4 came along
A tear-jerker without any African-American actors. The story tends to be overdone and unbelievable. In episode 4 we´re introduced to the grown-up version of Mildred´s daughter, played by Evan Rachel Wood. From this point on the script and acting was so bad I couldn´t watch any more. Whatever happened in the final episode will for ever be a mystery to me.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Aliens? Look more like dogs to me.
A big-budget CGI messup. These fake creations look more like barking dogs than aliens. Not scary at all. What a waste of time & money.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Bogged Down
I enjoyed the first episodes but now at the 4th episode things are getting bogged down. Too many sub-plots, too many characters who are not really involved in building suspense. It is a murder mystery isn´t it? The music seems to trinkle on without supporting the dramatisation. Compare this with "Insomnia" with Robin Williams and Al Pacino. Now THAT was a real murder mystery! I guess they don´t make em like they used to.
100 Days to Live (2019)
Low Budget So Called "Horror" Movie
After reading the overall good ratings I was looking forward to a good film. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The film started out well but after a while became bogged down with a terrible script. The worst thing was the cheap & cheesy music which destroyed any suspense the film was trying to present.
