Rise of the Footsoldier: Origins (2021)
Great nostalgia.
A superb addition to the franchise. Highly entertaining, with the usual characters playing their parts with great conviction. A heady mix of early 90's soundtrack, period correct cars and a good blend of searing violence and cracking comedy. Well done to all involved here, in ensuring there's still plenty of life in this tale yet.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Lovely little thriller.
As an amateur WW2 historian, I was intrigued by the premise, and yes upon viewing it's in implausible, but, this is still a great watch! Excellent suspense, magnificent acting by the female lead, superb editing and decent CGI. A wholly enjoyable movie.
Bitva za Sevastopol (2015)
A WW2 Epic.
Up there with Saving Private Ryan and Fury, this is absolutely fantastic. The attention to detail, the CGI, the emotion; just a superb appreciation of life in the middle of WW2 for an incredible Russian girl. Highly recommended.
Kamienie na szaniec (2014)
A superb film.
Great acting, magnificent filming and meticulous attention to period detail. A very worthy account of resistance in occupied Poland. Quite how other reviewers found this boring is perplexing. It's really well paced, and an engrossing watch.
Colette (2013)
Outstanding.
This film is captivating. The pace, the acting, attention to detail, the CGI, all excellent. A very moving story, and sobering insight into the deprivations and Auschwitz and casual brutality meted by the SS, as the inmates simply tried to make it through another day.
Nowhereland (2016)
Captivating.
A beautiful, yet ultimately heartbreaking film. Jessica Haid is simply mesmerising. Proof if ever it was needed, that a miniscule budget can produce a movie that cuts to the core.
Out of Her Mind (2020)
Unique and very clever.
Having read Sara's excellent book "Sex, Power, Money" I was looking forward to this, and was not disappointed. Her combination of witty humour, psychology, a sprinkling of science and clever insight into human behaviour is wonderful. A highly entertaining watch on a variety of levels.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Utterly incredible, beyond anything yet filmed.
Having this recommended by my daughter a few weeks ago, this as good as Band of Brothers, or Peaky Blinders. Impeccable direction, acting and adherence to historical fact. Best ever series.
The Boat (2018)
Excellent thriller.
Not sure why this isn't getting better reviews. It was suspenseful and intriguing from the outset. Very atmospheric, with a perfect musical backdrop, and excellent acting from the single male lead. It's also beautifully filmed, with wonderful attention to detail. The plot is a little like a maritime version of "Christine". Had me gripped from start to finish.
