El laberinto del fauno (2006)
One of my favorites
Insanely good
Historical time is beautiful. Spain during the civil War
You learn about the revolutionaries, also about their dreams
The fantasy makes sense
You emphasize with the girl, through the fantasy you see her dreams and hopes
The villain is scary. The general is one of the best villains
One of the most beautiful endings. I cried.
You feel "woooah" at the beauty
The music complements the story perfectly
Mimi wo sumaseba (1995)
Great movie
Fan of Ghibli
Not like other Ghiblis. Not fantasy.
Nice sweet story
A certain charm. A certain innocence. Hope is an important theme.
Love the way hardship and expectations are portrayed
The story was simple and realistic
The execution is perfect. The result is surprisingly great
Ghibli movies always teach you something
Wholesome scenes
Ending is unrealistic
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Great antiwar movie
Many have found this movie consists in 2 parts. Personally, I find there are three distinct parts in this movie, the second one consisting a bridge between the 1st and the 3rd one.
The first part consisted training the soldiers.
The second part consists in discovering Vietnam, its people and the other soldiers.
The third part finally was all about the war, its consequences and its effect on the soldiers.
Full metal jacket is a very intelligent anti-war movie, perhaps a bit too intelligent, as many misunderstood its message. The movie manages to not only condition the trainees but also to condition us the viewers. And that's the power of the movie.
And effectively the first part made us feel for the trainees. They were so strong, organized and funny that one could only feel sympathy for them. By the end of the first part one was expecting this hard training to result in forming some mighty heroes.
However soon enough one sees the result of the dehumanization in the boot camp. Their experiences in Vietnam even accentuate this. At the end of the movie one realises even more that the soldiers not only are brainwashed but that they lost all of their humanity.
Ben-Hur A Tale of the Christ (1925)
Impressive
The Ben Hur movie of 1959 is one of my favorite movies of all time. So after reading all the reviews and praise about this old version, I had to give it a try.
The movie starts a bit slowly. And even though I got a bit bored in the beginning(I ended up watching it at a 1.5 speed), I just couldn't stop watching. Thankfully the movie picked up pace quickly and at some point, I was completely hooked.
There's something unique about this movie. Something that has kept me watching in the beginning and that kept glued to the screen afterwards. I call it the magic of old movies.
The movie felt extremely raw and intense. The actors actually looked malnourished, their clothes looked cheap too. During the ship battle, one of the ships actually took fire and the stunt doubles were truly distressed at the time. This all made the events look very realistic.
I still prefer the 1959 version, but this one IS definitely a must watch too. They both had different feels.
The 1959 version was more romanticized. Ben Hur's fight against Messala and his pain seeing his mother and sister in that state felt much more dramatic. The whole 1959 movie revolved toward Ben Hur. He was the hero of the movie and we follow his revenge, sadness, perils and fights. That made the chariot race all the more important and the ending all the more satisfying.
The 1925 movie on the other hand focused less on Ben Hur and more on the events at the time. We see more of the Christ and more of the roman's oppression and consequently we feel more sympathy for the jews at the time.
Also Ben Hur in this version didn't seem like the hero, but as a true believer who kept fighting relentlessly, but who also was in dire need of saving.
Pinocchio (1940)
A truly magical movie
They don't do movies like Pinocchio anymore. Pinocchio isn't fast paced and explosive like most modern movies. Quite on the contrary it is quite slow, yet if one put the time to get invested in the story, one would get absolutely enchanted. The slow pace even helps to relate to the characters(especially Pinocchio and Gepetto) and share their dreams and hopes.
Pinocchio is a marvel of storytelling, it has a beautiful yet sad story, lots of depth and emotions, great character growth, a beautiful animation, great music(When you wish upon a star is undoubtedly Disney's best song) and unforgettable scenes(The clock scene made me fall in with cuckoo clocks, the one with the boy transforming in a donkey shocked me).
Few movies have filled me with emotion like this one. And I hope everyone can watch it to the end(even if they get bored at some point) to feel the magic of Disney.
Shrek 2 (2004)
Very entertaining again
With lots of humor, great characters and excellent songs, Shrek 2 is an extremely entertaining movie. The story is fast paced enough that one not only doesn't get bored, but doesn't even realize the passing time.
And while the first Shrek movie was mostly about Shrek and Fiona, in this one it's the supporting characters that steal the show. Especially Donkey and Puss were a joy to watch, each of their reactions and interactions being a treat.
Similarly to the first movie, Shrek 2 doesn't have the depth and emotion to be a 10/10. I wish we could've seen more of Fairy godmother's story and Shrek and Fiona's relationship. I also like Shrek 1 a little bit mostly because I preferred Lord Farquaad to the prince charming and the fairy godmother.
Considering the good ending and the bad reputation of the other sequels, I think I'm going to to stop here with the Shrek saga, for fear of being disappointed with the other sequels..
Shrek (2001)
Great Movie
I absolutely loved this movie. It has all the ingredients of a classic: an original story, great characters(especially donkey), great humor and a stunning soundtrack.
I especially loved how much of the movie was a jab on Disney/Eisner(Dulac & Lord Farquaad for example).
+ the humor (it had so many memorable scenes)
+ the songs
+ the story
+ the uniqueness (Shrek is one kind of)
+ the pace
- the movie lacked the emotions and the depthness necessary to be a 10/10 for me. If one wants that, he should watch the beauty and the beast, not Shrek.
= very entertaining, in fact so entertaining that one wishes to watch more and feels like the movie was a bit too short. = great movie. felt too short. doesn't possess the magic of the old disney movie to be a 10/10.
Elizabethtown (2005)
A story about life
This movie is one about life. The protagonist, after failing tremendously on his work project, decided to kill himself.
But suddenly he got a phone call about his father's death and has to return home to pick up his dad's body. On his way he meets a cheerful and optimistic girl and then gets to meet his family back home.
During his journey the protagonist progressively got better, surrounded and supported by all the people around him.
As someone who's experienced failure before, this movie touched me deeply.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Great movie
I watched the original Blade Runner 3 times so when I read the good critiques of this movie, I was very excited,
While it didn't conserve the dark atmosphere of the original, Blade Runner 2049 it still had the same theme. What's humanity? It even had a similar twist at the end.
Ryan Gosling had a great performance and it's always great to watch Harrison Ford. The scenario is great and the music and scenery are breathtaking. So all the good ingredients for a good sci-fi.
The only minus is the villains, I would have loved to know more about them and about the inception of the new generation of the blade runners.
