The Black Phone (2021)
I must have watched a different movie
Nothing scary and the only tension was during the opening intro music, which was great. Movie felt lazy, predictable and no back story or information about the Grabber. This sums up the modern day movie scene when people are giving this 9s and 10s. The standard has gone downhill badly and scriptwriting has become a lost art. There are reviews stating this is terrifying and the stuff of nightmares. I'm guessing they have never actually seen a genuine horror film before or are 10 years old.

Did I watch a different movie?!
So I haven't written a review for about a decade but felt compelled to after seeing many of the reviews here and watching the movie. At under an hour, I was a little doubtful that they could generate a enough suspense aligned with a decent story, and after watching it, I felt this was the case.
The first 20 mins are watchable, and the banter amongst the friends is believable, with a few laughs and suspense being built. Then suddenly it feels like all thought of suspense was cast aside and they just threw in as many jump scares and ridiculous character decisions as possible. It felt so rushed and there was not one part where I felt on edge or theoretically had the remote in my hand ready to turn down the volume to avoid a fright. It was almost comical the speed at whjc everything happened and all I could think about was wishing the movie would end so I could get another beer.
It felt like there was potential after the first 20 mins, but disappointingly this was thrown away with the last part of the film, in place of generic jump scares and fairly obvious outcomes to scenes.
How does this movie have 100% of positive critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes? This is one of the biggest mysteries of the universe.
I've seen some reviews state that this is one of the best horror movies they have ever seen. I can only imagine this is the only horror movie they have ever seen.
