David, what the hell?

Warning: Spoilers
Nuclear explosions occuring all over the world, people dying and the most amazing thing is the interaction between Marcy and David. This was powerful stuff, along with Marcy's plea to the Director.

Add to this the interesting storyline of Jeff and 001's method of interrogation made for yet another wonderful episode.

Grace and Trevor
7 November 2021
How good was this episode? The interaction with Grace and Trevor was wonderful. Grace finally showed her more human side as opposed to her hard-assed programmer side and this made the story more human and, of course, Grace more human.

My favourite episode of season 3. Apart from "David"

I wish the series could have carried on a little further.

Silent Witness: Two Spirits: Part 2 (2019)
Season 22, Episode 2

Continuing great storylines...

Warning: Spoilers
As a trans woman I found this story both horrifying and welcoming. Welcoming as it portrayed trans women and men as largley the bystanders in the story (apart from Rico and Evie) and that the killer wasn't a trans person (as has been portrayed several times in the past), but horrifying as we are still portrayed as the victims of multiple murders.

I found Andrew Knott's performance as a trans woman who is trying to find herself absolutely wonderful and Emma Frankland (Kelly) and Nicole Gibson (Evie) equally as wonderful.

The way that the Lyle Centre staff treated the trans people involved was wonderful (props to David Lintern).

Oh, and to those who class this as a "woke" episode? Remember, as of my writing this, since 1996 there have been 223 episodes of "Silent Witness" and only two have involved trans people.

Not deep but wonderful
29 August 2021
If you're looking for a deep story with pathos then don't bother but, if your're looking for light entertainment with a light story and some wonderful and amazing dance routines, (especially Latin) then do watch.

This is a proper feel-good film and worth every minute you spend watching it, especially for Tom Conti who is marvellous as Manu.

Just watch it, no preconceptions, and if you don't enjopy it then no problem. If you do then welcome to the club.

Just have fun.

Crossroads (1986)
10/10
An absolute classic
28 August 2021
I wont repeat the plot here as there are many reviews that do this. I saw this film in '86 when it first came out and I have never forgotten it. For me, Ralph Macchio has never been the "Karate Kid", he's always been Eugene "Lightning Boy" Martone, with that inimitable Blues sound.

As a musician this film had a big impact on me although it would be many years before I learned to play the guitar but, it inspired me to write many pieces using my instruments (trumpet and synths) in the style of blues and similar and that heartfelt "30th song" ("Feelin' Bad Blues by Ry Cooder), oh my god but that was awesome.

To this day I still don't understand why this film hasn't had more recognition than it has, especially with Ralph Macchio's reputation ("Karate Kid") and the music, which is absolutely awesome. It's full of music, humour, drama, love and one of the best film finale's in musical cinema history.

35 years later, it still hasn't lost anything.

Doctor Who: The Timeless Children (2020)
Season 12, Episode 10
10/10
Avenues and Alleyways
31 December 2020
To be honest, as a life-long Doctor Who fan, I felt that series 11 was a little weak in the story department. Jodie Whittaker saved it, i feel, with her portrayal of the Doctor. Series 12 was much better, with such awesome episodes such as "Fugitive of the Judoon" and "The Haunting of Villa Diodati", with Jodie coming into her own as the Doctor.

However, this episode and it's predecessor, were pure Who. I don't know which episode some of the people who gave a 1/10 rating were watching but it obviously wasn't this one. Nor have they watched the Tom Baker story "The Brain of Morbius" in which multiple regenerations of the Doctor are shown which obviously, in the canon of Dr Who, predated William Hartnell. This episode gives background to that and provides new avenues for the writers to explore.

The Doctor has always been a pivotal figure in the history of Gallifrey, almost as much as Rassilon and Omega. This episode, though, gives rise to the possibility of the Doctor being "The Other", the third of the founders of the Timelords.

So, for me, this episode gives me a sense of there being more to explore about the Doctor and, with Jodie, a fantastic Doctor to explore these new avenues and alleyways.

Good Omens (2019– )
10/10
An amazing rarity
1 June 2019
39 years ago I went to a SF convention in Birmingham, UK and, somehow, with a group of close friends, ended up having dinner with Neil Gaimen. During dinner he mentioned the new book he was writing with Terry Pratchett, called "Good Omens". He described it as "an apocalyptic story with comedic overtones". Several months later I was privileged to be at a small private reading of the book prior to its official release and ended up with a signed copy. I read it from cover to cover, many, many times and often wondered if a film would ever be made of it. I was worried that no-one would do it justice.

Tonight, I have just watched all six episodes and all I can say is "Wow". To make this as a film would have been a colossal mistake. To make it as a six part series was the best decision ever made.

The casting was inspirational. Adria Arjona as Anathema Device was brilliant. She matched the character perfectly. David Tenant and Michael Sheen as Crowley and Aziraphale were just inspirational and Jack Whitehall as Newton Pulsifer was brilliant. As for the rest of the cast, no-one could have done better.

The direction was awesome, the camera work was amazing and I loved how the the book's footnotes were worked into the script (bit of a trademark of Mr Pratchett).

Whether or not you will enjoy "Good Omens" depends on your sense of humour. If it leans towards slapstick or visual you may not. If it leans towards finding humour in dark situations you probably will. It also helps if you understand the trials and tribulations of driving on the M25, the London Orbital Motorway.

I will ask only one thing: Please, please, please, don't let anyone attempt to do a sequel.
