Triple 9 (2016)
So many cast members!
Triple 9 is a crime thriller. It probably wouldn't have worked as a book, and it barely works as a movie.
The movie has a stylized look. The cast is top notch and ready to deliver, but the writing tries to develop multiple story lines and fails. There are just as many holes in the story as there are bullets being fired.
Too many characters to develop properly. Motivations, origins and relevance to the story are essentially left for the audience to guess.
I felt this movie to be a half baked effort. It doesn't feel that much creative love went into it.
Hardcore Henry (2015)
First person gimmick just not enough
This romp would have made a good video game. It was a cool movie for about 20 minutes, but after that, it was a core to watch. This film is literally mindless action. The writing is just awful. So bad. You will not find a cohesive story, nor character development.
This movie relies on action sequences and some of these sequences are actually pretty awesome, but they just can't carry the movie. I would have been fine with this movie (and everybody in it) ending in a wide shot of planet earth exploding into a mushroom cloud.
I have no idea how this film almost maintains a 7 rating. I think IMDb regularly gets review raided by film marketing terrorists.
Green Room (2015)
Quintion Tarantino -- NOT
There are so many good reviews of this movie. It makes me think that my perspective might be a bit different than the majority. The premise is interesting and kept my attention for the first half of the movie.
The film attempts to blend elements of what Quinton Tarantino might do, but does it in a goofy manner and without the clever writing. I liked the production of the film. It had a clean look. The special effects were decent and had me cringing on more than one occasion.
I thought the casting was appropriate and could have worked well. My opinion of this film probably would have been higher if the characters were developed a bit differently.
The opportunity to develop a strong villain was introduced but abandoned. Why?
From a horror / thriller perspective, this movie just lacks the elements of pacing and fails to make use of some standard handles that make the genre work.
Either that, or the movie was just hacked in the editing room.
Abandoned (2015)
The right side up
This film is based on a true story, which makes it very interesting. It's a survival tale set on top of a giant collection of water we call the ocean.
The production is convincing and maintains immersion. I thought the casting was perfect, and the actors do an excellent job conveying their characters.
I scored the film high because I felt it presented different aspects of the human spirit which is observed through the characters response and interaction to the situation, themselves and each other.
There is no waste or filler in the film, everything is well paced and contributes to the story which is well written.
I love stumbling on rare gems like this.
