Anjaane: The Unknown (2005)
A Horror Film made entirely in a humorous format!
This film has been entirely copied from the Hollywood movie "The Others" (2002). But it has been made in a destructive way that if you have watched THE OTHERS you couldn't help laughing on this so-called horror film. It was made so badly and couldn't get any promotions therefore it was a box office washout. No one really cared to watch it. The characters are so unreal, and they have acted so badly that the horror story appears to be a comedy. Just when you try to think over the story a vivacious song comes in. Never mind, Himesh Reshammiya music is only the best technical part of the movie. Direction is too weak to grip the audiences.
I would rate it as 7/10 because it made me laugh continuously till the end. I believe it is the first horror film which has been made to make you laugh rather than scare.
Phir Wohi Raat (1980)
A Haunting Film Indeed!
Danny Dengzopa's directorial debut featuring the superstar Rajesh Khanna and Kim (whom he later married). This film is one of the best Hindi horror films. Apparently it has no haunted faces and fictitious haunted stuff but it provides an edge-of-the-seat entertainment to its viewers.
The protagonist has been haunted by her aunt who killed her mother and was sent to mental asylum. Rajesh Khanna is a psychologist who treats her and eventually falls in love with her. I will not speak a word after this about its story. It is a must see for people whose favorite genre in movies is horror. It has an enthralling suspense and will make you more and more engrossed as the story will progress.
Commenting on the technical points of the movie, it has no flaws. The director, cinematographer and art director has done complete justice to their work. Music by R.D. Burman is enchanting. Lata Mangeshkar's haunting melodies have made the songs memorable. Majrooh Sultanpuri's lyrics were fine.
I would rate it as 9.8/10 because it has the ability to entertain young as well as middle-aged viewers in terms of horror story.
Dushmun (1971)
Fantastic Movie!
DUSHMUN featuring once again the hit-lead Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz is simply excellent. Based on a village this movie has everything to offer for instance melodrama and emotions by Meena Kumari, romance between Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz, excellent soundtrack by Laxmikant Pyarelal, some powerful dialogues, comedy by Johnny Walker and fine cinematography.
Rajesh Khanna plays a truck driver who kills Meena Kumari's husband on an accident by his truck and the judge punishes him to serve Meena Kumari's family for few years. Then the story takes a beautiful turn. Will the family be able to live with a man who has killed their father? How will everything resolve? Will the driver be able to make them understand that it was just an accident not a murder? How does he help them? You must watch it to find out.
The chemistry between the lead pair is superb. They fight, they get romantic and sing some beautiful songs penned by Anand Bakshi after falling in love.
I would rate it as 9.8/10.
Pyaasa Sawan (1981)
Thirsty Rain!!
How can rain be thirsty?? Well this is an idiomatic expression which has been defined by this film beautifully. Jeetendra plays this role distinctively. Chandrakant (Old Jeetendra) marries a rich girl (played by Moushami Chatterjee) but they have no house to live and jeetu has no job either. However he gets some job and soon establishes a huge business. Later he gets no time for his wife and son Ravikant (Young Jeetendra)and eventually Moushami dies of illness. This is Pyaasa Sawana all about. They had money, riches, son, love but still could not spend splendid moments with each other. Then a leap of 20 years Ravikant marries Reena Roy after falling in love with her and history repeats itself. Watch out what happens with this couple??? Will they have the same destiny as his parents had?
I would rate this movie as 9.6/10. It is a must see if you believe in love, affection, spending moments of love together and destiny. Soundtrack by Laxmikant Pyarelal is superb. Each song has some entertainment to give. Be it "MEGHA RE MEGHA" an excellent melodious number by Lata and Suresh Wadkar, "O MERE CHAMAK CHHALO" a romantic funny number by Asha and Kishore and "TERE SAATH HAI JO MUJHE KYA KAMI HAI ANDHERON MEIN BHI MIL RAHI ROSHNI HAI" a Lata's solo number which conveys emotions of married life is also worth listening. Santosh Anand's lyrics are too good. Direction is also fine along with cinematography and editing.
Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978)
A Hindu Epic made for Bollywood Viewers
What a wonderful film by Raj Khosla! No doubt Raj Khosla made Nutan and Asha Parekh perform so marvelously that both of them gave their best in the film. Thus Nutan won the FilmFare Award for Best Actress and Asha Parekh was only nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza penned excellent dialogues. He also won Filmfare for Best Dialogue. Raj Khosla won Best Film Award too. Only music was remaining for this flick but Raj Kapoor's Satyam Shivam Sundaram also released in 1978 and it had much better soundtrack so it couldn't win Best Music Director Award for Laxmikant Pyarelal. The song "Main Tulsi Tere Aagan Ki Koi Nahin Mein Tere Saajan Ki" is the soul of the entire story. Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics so carefully that each word and simile used compliment the story. Other song "Chhaap Tilak Sab Cheeni Moh Se Naina Milaike" was Ammer Khusroo's song but Raj Kholsa always had Folk song in his movie such as "Bindya Chamkegi" in Do Raaste (1969). So this too had its Folk song which was by Ammer Khusroo. However Anand Bakshi wrote it nicely so its grace wasn't lost. Lata Mangeshkar gave her best for Laxmikant Pyarelal's music as always she did.
Coming back to movie the performance of Vinod Khanna and Vijay Anand is also nice. The way Raj Khosla portrayed Thakurs was distinctive. Screenplay and Editing were too good which never dragged the movie. I would rate as 10/10 as there are no obvious flaws and imperfection in direction and production. One must watch it!!
Jwar Bhata (1973)
A Full Time Pass Flick!!!
The story is about a grandfather who is looking for his grandson which has been adopted by a chef of a simple local restaurant. The movie goes on leap then Dharmendra has three little sisters which were daughters of the chef who adopted him. The parents died and Dharmendra looks after them along with this foster father's restaurant. There comes in Saira Banu and they fall in love. Watch to find what happens next! The movie is not at all boring but these days you may not find it that tempting. Cinematography is OK so as the choreography. Dharmendra performed very nicely. Music by Laxmikant Pyarelal is very good. This movie features some best songs such as "Rootha hai to manalein gay", "Dal Roti Khao". Lyrics and dialogues by Rajinder Krishan is good. I would rate it as 7/10 as it drags a bit after the first half. But performances and music can overcome it.
Apna Bana Lo (1982)
A Bollywood Masala!
Directed by J. Om Prakash who always made movies that had starting letter "A". For instance, his other work include Aasha, Arpan, Aap Ki Kasam, Aas Ka Panchi, Aap Ke Saath and many more.
Well the movie is based on Rekha (Roopadevi) who loses her child on truck where she stopped at a well to quench her thirst with water. The child's father died so as Rekha's so she was travelling on her foot and during such travelling this incident takes place. She then comes to city and becomes a singer and a performer. The child lives with Jeetendra (Master) who was the truck driver and later they unite when Rekha founds back her son and Jeetendra as her Love.
Technically the movie is good. No major flaws. One could enjoy watching it. What i liked the most of it was its soundtrack! Laxmikant-Pyarelal's music and good lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi. Lataji's two songs are marvelous one is a duet with Kishore Kumar and other is solo. The best song is Asha Bhonsle's "Apne Apne Miya Pe Sab Ko Bada Naz Hai". Kalpna Iyer's 80s item number "Jalne ki raat hai ya jaalane ki raat hai" was fine to watch. "Dil Kehta Hai Main Sunti Hoon" by Lata and Kishore is a fine romantic song.
I would rate this movie as 8.5/10 because of its soundtrack.
Pyar Jhukta Nahin (1985)
A Typical Bollywood Love Story
You must have seen a romantic movie which had the basic issue that rich girl marrying a poor boy. However in 1985 it was a new topic. The movie was a Super-hit. Especially Laxmikant Pyarelal's enchanting soundtrack made it more successful as it was a musical hit too.
Padmini is a rich girl who falls in love with a middle class photographer Mithun. Her parents initially disagree for the marriage but the daughter manages to make them ready for the marriage. Padmini's father Danny Dengzongpa makes Mithun a top class photographer and his salary gets an increment. Later Mithun discovers that Danny has made his promotion and this has hurt his self-respect. Padmini and Mithun separate. The next half of the movie is fresh which you may not have seen in new movies. So you must watch out to find what happens next?
I would rate this movie as 9.5/10. Lyrics by S.H. Bihari was fine with one song being blasphemous at the end. Music is excellent. All the songs are completely in Laxmikant Pyarelal's style. Lata Mangeshkar's voice for Padmini Kolhapure suits very well. Shabbir Kumar did justice to his vocals and to our ears too.
Kal Aaj Aur Kal (1971)
A Saga of three generations!
Randhir Kapoor's directorial debut film! The movie is based on how three generations live under one roof but with different opinions. The movie is a time-pass. The grandfather and grandson always had difference in thoughts while the father always tries to makeup between them. In the end, the grandfather dies giving the message that it is KAL AAJ AUR KAL. Performances are good especially Raj Kapoor's performance is very fine. He played a nice father and an obedient son. Shankar-Jaikishan's music is fine. I liked the song "Aap Yahaan Aye Kisliye Aap Ne Bulaaya Isliye". I would rate it as 7.5/10. One would not get bored while watching it.
Satyam Shivam Sundaram: Love Sublime (1978)
A must see flick
This movie has lot of best things to offer such as a gripping story, some powerful dialogues by Jainder Jain, excellent music by Laxmikant Pyarelal, nightingale voice of Lata Mangeshkar, well-written songs by Anand Bakshi, VithalBhai Patel and Pandit Narendra Sharma, good cinematography, nice direction and best editing by Raj Kapoor. I would rate this movie as 9/10.
This movie won 2 Filmfare Awards in categories of BEST MUSIC DIRECTOR TO LAXMIKANT PYARELAL and BEST CINEMATOGRAPHER TO RADHU KARMARKAR.
I would not say much about the story as one must watch it to enjoy. The film has no technical flaws. Songs are not just added instead they move the story.
Mera Naam Joker (1970)
Magnificent Movie
Raj Kapoor always made movies with passion. This flick was simply one of them. He acted marvelously. The film had won 5 Filmfare Awards including National Award.
Acting and Direction:
Raj Kapoor's acting is outstanding and direction has no flaws. The young joker played by his youngest son Rishi Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor won National award for his performance. The direction is highly praising. To my mind, no other director in Bollywood could make such long film that entertaining as Raj Kapoor did.
Production and Editing:
R.K Films spent a lot of money for this film too. Raj Kapoor's editing was also excellent. No dragging scenes at all.
Lyrics and Music:
Lyrics were fine. Shanker-Jaikishan won the Filmfare Award for best music director. The song "KEHAT HAI JOKER SARA ZAMANA", "TEETAR KE DO AAGE TEETAR", "JEENA YAHAN MARNA YAHAAN", "AAY BHAI ZARA DEKHE CHALO", "JAANE KAHAAN GAAYE WOH DIN". Manna Dey won best playback singer award for AAE BHAI... I loved the music. I think it's still impossible to forget these songs.
Cast:
Good performances by all the cast including Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra, Dara Singh and Rajendra Kumar.
Message:
The movie conveys an optimistic message.
