What Happened to Monday (2017)
Meh/Just Okay
I finally watched "What Happened To Monday" two days ago, on a Monday. I have mixed feelings about it. This movie is about one person playing seven people playing one person. It's not as good as I expected it to be. I had heard about the synopsis and thought it was about 7 non-identical siblings of different genders and ages, etc. I do understand why they made the main characters identical septuplets that shared the identity of Karen Settman, but it didn't quite translate as good as it could have.
We don't really get to "know" each sister that well. They are separated by their different hairstyles and some minor characteristics, but that's it. Most of them die before we get to learn that much about them. The plot falls flat and is repetitive after a while: the septuplets/siblings are pursued by federal C. B. A. Agents, and one of them dies. That's basically it, over and over again. This happens a total of four times throughout the film. They really could have cut back on the running time. Oftentimes, I find that if a movie is longer than 1 hr 45 minutes, it probably could have been cut back some. This was the case with this movie.
There were a few parts in the plot that I don't understand. How was Joe, the head of the C. B. A. Agents, blown up in the showdown with Friday (and Thursday), only to still be alive after that? This was listed as a plot goof. I also didn't understand why Terrance, their grandfather, couldn't have taken Thursday to get her finger fixed at the hospital when she broke it as a child, instead of chopping off the fingers of all the other girls. Maybe that would have been too long to keep the rest home alone if she had to have an extended stay at the hospital?
Adrian added some nice eye candy to the film. I liked the sex scene, though it must be noted that he was having sex with one of Monday's sisters (Saturday to be exact) and not Monday herself, who is his love interest. The young doctor at the beginning of the movie was also attractive.
All in all, the movie was just meh. It was suspenseful, boring, gruesome, repetitive, and sometimes comical. Take that for what you will.
P-Valley (2020)
Worth the Wait, Worth the Hype
I had heard a lot about P-Valley, mainly in the Twitter streets. Oftentimes, I do not watch a show when everybody else does because I don't want to feel pressured into doing so. I try not to be like this anymore. My reason for waiting so long to watch P-Valley was I was behind on other shows and I didn't have a Starz account. I recently binged all the episodes in like 3 days. And it is worth the wait and worth all the hype around it. I was concerned that it would be extremely misogynistic, but it wasn't! Of course it has mature content, but it's not overdone. There are also Queer characters. I love the whole cast! It's so many attractive characters with good story lines. I will say that some story lines drag out too long while others wrap too quickly, but it's still a good show. Love it.
Orange Is the New Black (2013)
Was good until Season 3
*This review has vague criticisms to prevent spoilers.*
The first two seasons were really good. In fact, if I were to rate these two seasons alone, I would give them a 10. I admired that there was a diverse set of characters in the cast. The characterizations and the backstories were excellent. However, I have a serious problem with Piper and all of her white privilege. At first, I'm like "okay, good that they show that white people have privilege." But after a while, it gets exhausting and disgusting. Not to mention that a year is way too long to have to wait for the new season. Every six months is more preferable.
Not only that, but the show fell off a bit in Season 3. I understand that everything can't be great all the time, but the spark just was not there. And Season 4? Don't get me started.
There was a lot of unsettling things going on in Season 4. There were racial slurs thrown around, racist symbols, etc. As a black woman, it made me extremely uncomfortable. It was hard for me to get through this season, but I pushed through because I didn't want to give up on what started out as a good show. Nearly every episode of Season 4 has some sort of disturbing aspect. For example, perpetrators of crimes get undeserved sympathy. And despite this show being about an all-women prison, it really has a problem with unhealthy lesbian relationships. The depressing stuff was overdone, and the only positive thing about it was ruined.
Three more things: 1. THIS SHOW HAS NO REGARD FOR BLACK PEOPLE! 2. THE WRITING STAFF IS NOT DIVERSE AT ALL! 3. NO ONE CARES ABOUT PIPER AND ALEX ANYMORE!
I hope that Season 5 will "undo" the heartache in S3 & S4 for the sake of those that are still watching. I personally DO NOT plan to watch it. NOPE!
Mississippi Damned (2009)
Good but too much going
This movie had a good plot line and a really good cast. However, I had some issues with it.
At the beginning of the movie, I had a hard time trying to figure out what was going on. As mentioned in the summary title, there was way too much going. There were a lot of characters, so sometimes I forgot names. It was easy to get the sisters' stories mixed up. I also didn't understand some parts of the ending. I won't say too much because I don't want to spoil it for others.
And overall, the movie was too depressing. Just was a complete overkill of depressing stuff. I thought that nothing would ever end well for any of the characters. I had to watch cartoons afterwards.
