Caïn (2012–2020)

Outstanding TV series
27 April 2017
Cain is based on a wheelchair bound police detective with more than a few skeletons in his closet. Cain is one part Chief Ironside, one part Doctor House, one part Sherlock Holmes, and one part Dirty Harry. In short, he is cynical, deductive, tough-as-nails, and dangerous, breaking every rule in the book. He is brilliant and flawed, consistent and unpredictable, caring and ruthless. If you watch one episode, you cannot wait to see the next, and the next, and the next. I am surprised HBO hasn't yet bought the rights to make an American version.

Dark and Poetic
26 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is a dark, poetic semi-autobiographical movie based on a book by Amos Oz about a young couple and a child who are living through the turbulent foundation of Israel. The movie focuses on hard realities and not the usual pioneer dreams that were sold to the public and which remain part of the myth of that era. It is not an action movie and the movie is in Hebrew, so if you don't like subtitles or have little interest in the Israel's birth or the novels of Amos Oz, you probably won't find this movie as great as I did. However, even if you rate this movie as average, you will still agree that the details are incredibly accurate to the smallest clump of dirt, shirt threat, and stone wall. This is not a cleaned-up Hollywood version of Israel. Natalie Portman's acting is outstanding, the scenes feel real, and the screenplay maintains the story teller's heartfelt artistic touch.

Well made modern drama
21 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Set in Madrid, this movie gives a new twist to private investigator movies, with a view that focuses on the lives of three female private investigators.

As with most actual private investigations, there are no car chases and no shoot-outs. The real drama is the betrayal the investigators reveal and the betrayals they commit to investigate others. In turn, they discover that their own lives are just as troubled as the clients the seek to help.

The acting is excellent, the stories are believable, and the editing and production are top quality. The Spanish audio quality is good and English subtitles are available. In short, if you are looking for an action-packed spy movie, go elsewhere. However, if you want good drama, sweetened with intimacy, caring, and a few drops of subtle romance, this movie well worth your time.
