Reacher (2022)
Entertaining but flawed
This is a fun show for what it is. I haven't read the books but I definitely want to in order to link parallels between them. However, I can be a bit too analytical of movies and shows and I try my hardest to suspend by belief for entertainment. But there are a few things that instantly bring me out of the immersion.
Blatantly wrong information and depiction is one, inconsistency is another. Right off the show gets a lot wrong with guns, ammo, jail/prison, etc. Ok, I can let some of that go. It's annoying but not terrible. But it's hard to keep immersed and keep watching when Reacher easily defeats 4 guys in one scene and then gets absolutely whooped by a skinny meth head in another. I'm summing it up to Season 1 growing pains, let's see how Season 2 goes.
*UPDATE*
Season 2 is garbage. The writing is garbage. The acting is garbage and cringey. The ridiculousness is worse and the insults to the audience intelligence is through the roof. Plus they've made the good guys sadistic sociopaths. My new rating is 3 for the handful of decent episodes in the first season. This isn't even fun Dad TV/action anymore. It's just plain dumb.
PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023)
Meh. Poorly written with a couple funny moments
We were all excited to watch this and it started out pretty good. But as the movie goes on the writing starts to get inconsistent and silly. Drama is created for really no reason and the "laws" of the world the movie is set in get broken and manipulated to fit the situation. It has a few good funny moments where you genuinely laugh but the problems then start to stack up pretty quickly and eventually you're left with a feeling of "silly" and "nonsensical". It's really too bad. The first movie was great. It was light hearted with a good story and some real dramatic moments that this movie didn't live up to.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Just...ok...
Not sure where people are getting "the best Wick/action movie ever", because that's not the movie I watched. I just watched the first 3 Wick movies before this one, and I'm glad I did. Because the quality between them is glaringly obvious. Any action flick like these you have to suspend your imagination, but between JW1 and JW4, well you might as well remove your brain before stepping in to the theater. I appreciated JW1 because he got hurt and you could see the suffering as the film went on. The shooting and fight scenes were tactical and tight and extremely well coordinated. JW2, little more suspension with the bullet proof suit, "but it's gonna hurt". And it did. He got hit by a couple cars, eh ok it's a movie. He got stitched up here and there, etc. But by the time we get to JW4, bullets are now bouncing off the bullet proof suit that everyone is wearing, not using cover and just covering their head with the coat, getting hit by cars at full speed over and over and over and then dropping from 2 stories, crushing the roof of a van and just chugging along. And John Wicks aim has gotten a lot worse. It's too bad. The series started to degrade just a bit with JW3 and this one just went full send.
Fright Night (2011)
Not impressed
I forgot about this movie for 11 years. I typically watch the original during the Halloween season and this year I decided to try watching this one too, back to back, and see how they compare. They don't. The remake doesn't have the charm of the original. The pacing is really really off and the characters have silly dialogue and behaviors. Some things that stood out to me are Charley and Ed's interactions and how does Ed know Jerry is a vampire again? And the scene in the kitchen with Charley getting beers for Jerry was really odd. Why is Colin Farrell fidgeting so much, constantly looking around uncomfortable and then telling Charley his girl and mom are hot and bangable? Just weird. In the original Jerry was pretty subtle in his killings, keeping it to escorts and hookers whereas this new Jerry is doing everything he can to be noticed and caught.
