Vagrant Queen (2020)
Vagrant Queen -Pilot Episode - the wait is over- Here is what we got
I just watched the Premier episode of "Vagrant Queen" a new Space Opera TV series on the SyFy channel. They put a lot of money into this show, the sets looked as good as any movie set. I believe they have a good cast and the art design and makeup were right up there with the best of Star Trek and Star Wars. I really like the premise of this show which is about a former Queen whose planet has fallen under a dictatorship and she is living her life as a fugitive on the run in space. . . . . . . . . .unfortunately the thing that really disappointed me was I felt that they producers tried to hard to force too much humor into it and it just wasn't funny and the humor felt completely out of place at times with the seriousness of the plot and at times left me not knowing if this supposed to be an serious action show or a comedy. The pilot episode felt like it lacks direction and doesn't know what it wants to be . .. . .. . . I will tune in again next week for episode 2 because I am really hoping for a new Sci-Fi franchise to pick up the Sci-Fi mantle and take off. So I am rooting for this show, but at the same time if it doesn't get better with the second episode, then this show will be short lived.
Isis (1975)
Isis
I watched this show regularly every Saturday Morning in the late 70's . I looked forward to seeing every Saturday. It was one of my favorite TV shows as a kid. I was too young at the time to notice the low budget production aspects of it and too young to care.
Once the TV show went off the air, this character completely disappeared from comic/superhero book culture and I never understood why. I can remember in the 80's and 90's telling people about my memories of this show and no one seemed to remember it or even have heard of it.
However a few decades later and thanks to the miracle of YouTube, one night for giggles I thought I would search for it, and to my everlasting surprise, I discovered that all 22 episodes were available for free viewing on YouTube.
It was at that time that I binge watched the first 10 or so episodes back to back. It was the first time sine the late 1970's that I had seen this any of this series that I remembered so fondly from my childhood.
First off, I didn't remember the actress playing Isis (JoAnna Cameron) being that beautiful. She is absolutely stunningly gorgeous. Secondly, I had no memory of this show being was so campy. Thirdly, The low budget really shows in every episode. Fourtly, there really is no real action scenes in this show (for some reason I thought I remember seeing Isis fighting bad guys... but those memories must've been false memories because Isis does a whole lot of nothing in this series. The Character is played out as being more of a flying sorceress than she is a superhero. Fifthly, I didn't remember Shazam/Captain Marvel being in so many of these episodes.
I guess I had this expectation that I was going to rediscover something that I loved from my childhood in the late 1970's. But what I got was a reality that wasn't anywhere near as good as I remembered as a child.
But it does have some redeeming qualities to it, such as JoAnne Cameron being so beautiful (and looking very good in that short skirt). Each episode tries to tell a moral story.
Overall this show is well below average
But I am glad to see that the new TV series "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" brought the Isis character back ((( but DC changed the name of the character from Isis to Zari because the name "Isis" has become associated with middle east terrorist groups in recent years.
V for Vendetta (2005)
This movie is like a Coca-Cola that has lost it's fizzle
*** This review may contain spoilers ***
This movie is like a Coca-Cola, RC Cola or Pepsi that has gone flat and lost it's fizzle. When a soda pop goes flat, it still has all of its tasty ingredients in tact, but it just isn't any good That is the analogy I'd use to describe this movie. It's a soda pop with no fizzle. Is very accurate.
V for Vendetta is a movie with all of the good ingredients it needed to be great. A Decent cast, excellent special effects, a great story premises, a good musical score, well coordinated stunts and fight scenes. But despite having all of the good ingredients..it just isn't very good
When I first saw the previews for this movie, I thought it was going to be one of the greatest movies ever made, and I could not wait to see it. I had this preconceived notion that it was going to be a cross between Zorro and Goerge Orwells "1984" all rolled into one movie with a vengeance oriented plot. I was very disappointed.
The story moves at a much slower pace than I was expecting( a very- very slow pace)- In fact, it crawls. There was no where near the amount of action that the previews indicated that there was going to be....In fact it is a very-very talkative movie. True there are some good action sequences, and they are done well, there just isn't enough of them, and the action scenes are too far apart and too few of them.
SPOILER ALERT: I was never able to comprehend the fact that the lead character named "V" kidnapped Natalie Portman's Character, tortured her, shaved her head, starved her, and even killed her friend who was protecting her... and then not only did she still trust him and she even came back to him to help after all of the hell he put her through. - - - - - - That was just STUPID! - - - - - From that point in the movie, until the end, it was now an insult to my intelligence, and unenjoyable.
A said before .... This movie is like a Coca-Cola, RC Cola or Pepsi that has gone flat and lost it's fizzle. When a soda pop goes flat, it still has all of the ingredients needed for greatness, but it has no fizzle and just isn't any good
Superman Returns (2006)
seen it 13 times , and liked it each time,
I have always had a love hate relationship with the Superman Movies.
first I loved Superman:The Movie(1978)..I consider that one to be a true American all time classic
2nd, I equally loved Superman II(1981) just and much as I loved the original Superman movie...both of those movies set the standards that I believe all comic book movies should be measured by. they are great.
3rd, then came Superman III(1983)...okay, this one isn't quiet as good as the first 2 movies. but none-the-less, it does have its moments, and it isn't bad..it just wasn't that great.,,,a few plot holes, but it was still an enjoyable movie
4th, Superman IV:The Quest for Peace....what the hell happened? Its daylight in America and China at the same time, Supes steals all of the worlds nukes, Nuclear Man isn't really nuclear powered(nope he's solar powered)....Mariel Hemmingway can breathe in outer space... and the movie only got worst and worst. so bad that I found myself wondering if adults had really wrote the script, or was it written by a bunch of 3rd graders
5th, then came the Superboy TV series in the late 1980's(which depicted Superman/Clark Kent in college)..not all bad..but not really good either (it lasted one season and then got the ax)
6th, Hollywood just would leave Supes alone...then came Louis & Clark: The new Adventures of Superman. ...again, not bad, ...but not great either...And I never liked Dean Cain as the man of Steel, he was too boyish looking
7th, then came Smallville......Smallville destroys the entire background of Superman's past(Earth past) by placing him in the same high school with Lex Luther in the same town(and they are best friends...but Lex doesn't recognize him when he's superman ...this is pathetic I had given up on the Superman franchise after Smallville.
But then came "Superman Returns" .........this was the first truly enjoyable Superman since 1983. Although it still falls short from the Glory of Superman I&II, it is better than Superman III and all of the skimpy Superman related TV shows that have been hasten onto the airwaves over the last 20 years.
Brand Routh gives a solid performance as Clark Kent/Superman the special effects are wonderful(fantastic) ..the producers reused the old John Williams music score.....the story is good(although I admit that I did have some issues with Supes using his superpowers to stalk Lois Lane at her home) The writers went back to the basic for this one.
this is a must see movie,it gets it right! and it makes up for the 20 years of bad Superman TV shows ! ! ! ! ! !
Galaxy Quest (1999)
Fantastic
Sci-Fi Comedy? - that concept has never worked, many have tried it, remember "The Ice Pirates" or "Pluto Nash" or "Spaceballs" - many have tried, and many have failed, but this was by far the best ever attempt at it, and the only one I actually enjoyed. All the other attempts at making a sci-fi comedies were either too stupid to enjoy, or they were just a bunch of parody scenes that made fun of other sci-fi movies. I thought this one was really funny & Original (I'd like to see a sequel). Its a must see for anyone who likes sci-fi. because this film is funny enough to be called a comedy, and sci-fi enough to be cool.
Gangs of New York (2002)
Maybe my favorite movie of all time
As I was going to see this film, I already knew what is was going to be about, and before I seen it,I already loved the story concept (even If I hated the title - It should've been called "Ashes of the Irish" or something like that). but for what ever reason they chose to name this film "Gangs of New York", and it wasn't the film I thought it was going to be. First I'd like to say that Daneil Day Lewis played his role perfect. He did so good in his role as the butcher that I cannot imagine any another actor in that role (Really). I also liked the surreal, Dirty,Brutal,Gritty old 19th century New York City setting..I though the sets were fantastic. The Special effects were pretty standard(which means pretty good these days), and Liam Neeson was also very convincing as the boys father, too bad that his character was only in the movie for about the first 15 minutes of the film.
However what hurt this film is that it is way too long, and you almost feel like the director is trying to drag it out further with a series of scenes that have little or no bearing on the story. Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio were the way wrong choices for this film. I remember thinking to myself as I was watching it that Colin Farrell or Ewan McGregor would've been much more better suited for the role of Anstredam than DiCaprio was. And Diaz is much too much of a modern California girl to star in this period film set in 19th century New York City and it shows. Again I found myself recasting that role to Kristen Dunst or Heather Graham who I believe would've been for better in that role than Diaz. Neither Diaz or DiCaprio are convincing and there acting skills are just flat all the way through this film. Another pitfall of this film is the miserable film score. the pulsating high school marching band style snare drums that continuously play to a fast paced beat actually begins to give you a headache before the film is finished.
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)
The Greatest Star Trek Ever - Bar None
I wasn't at all impressed with the last Star Trek movie called Star Trek:Insurrection, so my expectations weren't all that high for Star Trek:Nemesis. Well they should've been, because Star Trek:Nemesis is the best Star Trek film since Star Trek II:The Wrath of Khan - and it may be better than that one. This film has got everything, A strong plot, good character development, brilliant acting, edge of your seat action sequences, great special effects, and a wonderful musical score.....I was blown away by how good Star Trek:Nemesis was. I found myself immediately wanting to see it again. I cant wait to add this film to my DVD collection. This is the film that George Lucus wishes that Star Wars Episodes I & II could've been. I cant say enough good about Star Trek:Nemesis
Flash Gordon (1980)
What Ever!
by some of the reviews I've read, it looks like it doesn't take too much to entertain many of you.
This was another one of Universal Studios' late 1970's attempts to throw another out a sci-fi adventure to ride the profiting coat tails of the Star Wars phenomenon that was still red hot. (Other big budget attempts by Universal Studios to ride the coat tails of Star Wars were Battlestar Galactica & Buck Rodgers in the 25 Century- of which both were double released as both a Television Show and Theatrical Movie). The only thing that Univeral Studios did different with Flash Gordon was that they never crossed it over from the big screen and into a TV series like they had done with Buck Rodgers & Battlestar Galactica.
Queen's music soundtrack is as silly as this movie.
The Good news is that I really believe that somewhere down the road (several years from now) someone is going to re-do this into a major big budget remake, with glorious space battles, great visual effects and lot and lots of action....
The Bad new is that was what this 1980 version was supposed to be exactly what I described that the future version should be... and this movie fails on many many levels.
The acting is terrible, the plot is okay(could have been better) the action is comical, music stinks and the special effects are the equivalent to a low budget film. - What were they thinking??
So what was Universal Studios thinking?? - well I already answered that question with my first paragraph, they(Universal Studios) were thinking that had to get a sci-fi adventure film out into the market as quick as possible to ride the coat tails of the success of Star Wars an turn over a quick and easy profit, Universal Studios only purchased rights to the use name Flash Gordon because of its name recognition (they had done the same thing with Buck Rodgers in 1979)
In 1980 Flash Gordon was not the first time in the late 70's/early 80's that Universal Studios tried to ride the coat tails of Star Wars. What is interesting is that it would be their last attempt to do it. After Flash Gordon was released in 1980 it was apparent that Universal Studios were never going to have their own Star Wars.
Universal Studios attempts to ride the coat tails of the success of Star Wars
1978 Battlestar Galactica (perhaps their best and most noble effort- in some ways it was better than star wars)
1979 Buck Rodger in the 25th Century (pure plot less outer space disco)
1980 Flash Gordon (you already know)
1980 Galactica 1980 (why, O lord Why did they make this god awful show?)
1981 Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century (it was revised for season two, only aired on the BBC in Great Britain - it was canceled in the U.S. in 1979
Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004)
The Lost Platoon becomes ST2
For those who don't know......(and that seems to be all of you)
The script for Starship Troopers 2 was dreamed up during the filming of the first one, but it was never intended to be the sequel. The filming the first film had gone over budget by several millions of dollars and someone came up with the idea that they could film a scaled down second movie(no gore,no sex) with a 2nd set of actors, using the existing already built sets while those sets were still standing and show it on T.V. as a made for T.V. movie called "Starship Troopers: The Lost Platoon" ......and then debut the Made for T.V. movie on television two weeks before their release of Starship Troopers in theaters. Somehow the made for T.V. movie was going to be a advertisement/marketing tool for over-the-budget studio nightmare "Stardship Troopers" which cost over $126 MILLION to make .....and because the costumes and sets already existed, the T.V. movie was going to cost pennies on the dollar to make..............COLUMBIA/TRI-STAR Pictures was never able to secure a prime-time air date with any of the major networks and henceforth the T.V. movie idea never happened! ! ! !
Exit 1997, Enter 2004
In 2003 Phil Tipett brought the "Starship Trooper:The Lost Platoon" idea back to COLUMBIA/TRI-STAR attention and they green lighted it, but only if it could be done for around $5million (only 5% of what the first film cost to make).. because the sets of the original film were tore down years ago... they had to create a whole new set, all done in a studio(Low budget style) and the script had to be re- written.
The body snatchers storyline was never part of the original script- that storyline was added later because their budget constraints prevented then from filming an hour(or more)of bug battles/action scenes. after the script was re-plotted and re-written, the title was changed to "Starship Troopers 2:Hero of the Federation" and the whole movie was filmed in only 26 days using just 2 sound stages...... ....And now you know the truth about this film.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
I have seen worse (I think)
I have always like two genres of movies better than all other genres (Historical Fiction/Drama & Sci Fi adventures). So it come to reason that I'd was interested in this one from the first time that I saw the previews.
Then I seen it and discovered that this was more of a concept film than anything. ......And to be frank with you the concept doesn't sell! ! ! The movie takes place in a type of Neo-Futuristic landscape based on the 1930's. I though the story was actually good. and the acting was actually good. The musical score was actually good. but the fantasy- ish pulp fictionized comic book look of the film actual made it hard to watch.(at least it did for me) This film is worth watch one time ....it not going to become an instant sci-fi classic with you. Nor will this film generate enough interest that you'd want to see a sequel(trust me, If they make a sequel I will not bother to see it)This film will never rival/compete with other sci-fi films like the Star Wars, Alien(s), Starship Troopers, Matrix,Star Trek and other franchises seem to produce every time out.
I'm giving it 4 out of 10 stars (And I'm only going that high with it because the acting & musical score are good)
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
As much as I loved the first one ....this one is even better
I expected this film to be good, but I didn't expect it to be better than the first one ....but it was.
This film is great. I absolutely loved it. I would recommend this film to any one at any age. It's just pure fun with a great story, & some really great special effects thrown in with it.
this franchise in my opinion has now asserted itself as the premier film franchise in the comic book/superhero genre. I really think that all future comic book/superhero films are going to have to look back on Spiderman 1 & 2 as the new standard setters to beat in that genre.
I give it 10 out 10 stars
Moonrunners (1975)
The movie that inspired the TV series "The Dukes of Hazzard"
Very interesting .... I didn't know this movie even existed until I saw a late night showing on a cable channel ...and it's resemblance to the Dukes of Hazzard was incredible (The Dukes appeared as a T.V. show 4Yrs later) The movie even had Sheriff Roscoe and it had Uncle Jessee and they even had a dirt track race car named after General Lee's horse. They even had Waylon Jennings narrating the story.
I never knew that the Dukes of Hazzard was based on a movie, until I saw this.
To beat all ....this movie was incredibly entertaining.
I'm surprised that this movie hasn't developed a strong cult following because of it's Dukes of Hazzard connection.
Battlestar Galactica (2003)
Some flaws of the original are corrected.....but
Some flaws of the original show are corrected with this remake ....but new flaws are created with the remake where none had existed before!
Battlestar purist are gonna hate to hear this but.... the original B.G. was a much flawed creature. For example.... in the 25 years that B.G. has been around, I have probably watch the original pilot episode/movie at least 10 or 15 times. And every time I 've seen it, I am always bugged by the fact that there are 12 home planets and not a single one of those 12 planets has a military base on it, not one of those 12 planets had satellites with long range scanners to see that the Cylon invasion force was coming? Not one of those 12 planets had an antiaircaft missile defense system?...Apparently not!!!!! Even when I watch it for the first time as a 9 year old Kid I asked those questions as the Cylons Raiders went totally unchallenged & unopposed as they delivered death & destruction to the 12 colonies. THE COMMON SENSE REALIST IN ME SAYS THAT THE 12 HOME WORLDS WOULDN'T HAVE NEEDED ANY BATTLESTARS TO DEFEND THEM, BECAUSE THEY WOULD'VE HAD MISSLE DEFENSE SYSTEMS AND POWERFUL MILITARY BSAS AND THEY WOULD'VE ALSO HAD LONG RANGE SCANNERS MOUNTED ON Satellites AND THEY WOULD'VE KNOWN FAR FAR IN ADVANCE THAT THE ATTACK FORCE WAS COMING AND WOULD'VE BEEN ARMED TO THE HILT AND READY TO BLAST THEM INTO KINGDOME COME WHEN THEY ARRIVED. .....i THINK i'VE MADE MY POINT
exit 1978...........enter 2003
The heavily flawed Cylon destruction of the colonies that was ridiculously done in the original series was all corrected by the remake...In the remake we learn that Cylons are humanoid robots, and the the colonies are all on the same planet. Unlike the original the remake is much smarter...in the new one the humanoid cylons use sex as a weapon to trick a very young and very horny Boltar into giving them the codes to shut down the planetary defense and shut down all computers systems (including the computers inside the Viper cockpits). After all communications are down and the humans cannot respond against the Cylons. The Cylon's then destroy the planet with Nucular missiles, and plunge it into a post deadly nuclear Holocaust......this is 1000 times more believable& smarter than the original...The remake gets it RIGHT.
I still didn't like the concept of changing Starbuck & Boomer to female characters..at first the SCI-FI Channel promised that this was done to enhance the story.....but Starbuck was still a smoking a Cigar, flirting, gambling and brawling..and NO it did not enhance the story at all ...In fact I found myself winding why the just didn't go ahead and hire a male actor to play that role because it wouldn't have compromised any of the story if they had've and it would have made so many fans/purist of the original series B.G. more acceptable to the new series...that remains a mystery to me.
The only thing I was strongly objectable too was that the new female Boomer is really a cloaked Cylon spy and doesn't even know it....Was that really needed???? again this change accomplished absolutely nothing and again left the viewer wondering WHY DID THEY DO THAT??
Its almost like the 1978 version and the 2003 version counter balance each other , because all of the flaws of the original are corrected in the remake but the 2003 version created many new flaws the were done right the first time in the original version..If you could chop them up and re-edit them into one movie it would be perfect.
I also didn't like the fact that the wonderful soundtrack of Stu Phillips wonderful theme music was recycle for the remake. In fact the music in the remake pretty much is nothing more than a drum track and some keyboard music...I was very disappointed with that.
I was also disappointed that the new 2003 remake didn't give a lot of good fighter to fighter combat/space battles. We only got to see a couple of skirmishes and that was all. This is a supposed to be a space opra not a soap opra.
My last complaint of the new 2003 remake was the sound effects (or the lack there of) ...In the opening sequence we see the destruction of a Human space station. As you are watching the space station explode into a huge fire ball....all you hear is total silence. The happened again when the Cylons Nuked the home world. We get to see the blast but we get to hear only silence.....I didn't shell out a small fortune for my Dolby 5.1 Digital surround sound to see silent explosions -OH! HELL NO!!!!! I hope some of the series editors log onto IMDb and read this!!! When I see explosions on my T.V. screen I want to hear THUNDER in speakers filling my living room with reverb that rattles my windows !!!!
Nick Fury: Agent of Shield (1998)
What? Huh?
what were they thinking? this film was quickly lost in the sea of forgetfulness -- there is a very, very good reason for that. The special effect are terrible, the acting is very bad. the story is extremely dull. there are real action scenes. but the girls are cute. the women in this are pretty hot and look very sexy in those skin-tight outfits, and that is the only good thing i can say about this movie - 1 out of 10 stars
Space Raiders (1983)
A Desperate Attempt to ride the skirtales of Star Wars' Success
This movie is a desperate attempt to ride the skirt tales of the success of the Star Wars movies. The film uses recycled footage from "Battle Beyond the Stars" which is another Roger Corman Sci-Fi Turd, but at least this one is better than "Battle Beyond the Stars" - there is no real acting in this film (but its a Roger Corman film-What did you expect)again the entire soundtrack was done on a Keyboard/Synthesizer, the sound effects are recycled from "Battlestar Galactica" - there are no special effects because they were recycled/rearranged space scenes from another movie, the costumes look like something right out of 1981 salvation army salvage. --ironically, the little boy in this film gives one helluva performance, and he'd resurface again to star in the Sylvester Stallone movie "Over the Top" - I give this movie 3 stars out of 10
Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)
Love this movie, but I believe it should have been a live action movie instead of animation
This was the Biggest Mistake in the history of Disney..by that I mean, I absolutely loved it...and I believe this may be one of (if not the) Best animated movie I've ever seen.
right now you are asking yourself, why was it a mistake?-------
because this should've been a Live Action feature film ! !------
the story is GREAT! if this had been done as a feature film instead of a cartoon, this movie would've easily gone down as one of the all time Sci-Fi/Fantasy giants, ranking right up there with the Star Wars,Jurassic Park, and Lord of the Rings films - YES, The story and concept IS really that GOOD. Unfortunately this was done as an Animated Cartoon Feature and now it will forever be type cast into the realm of Disney's Movies like Dumbo,Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp, and Bambi and will never be taken seriously by the Sci- Fi/Fantasy realm.
as I was watching it, I could already imagine Matt Damon as Milo Thatch, and maybe Drew Barrymore as Keeta..and I could imagine some top notch special effects -- but that will never happen
I gave his film 10 out of 10 stars --but this story was WAAAAY to good for animation.........maybe (if we are lucky) 10 years from now Disney will remake it into a 1st class Feature film production (Why not- It'd be much better than 102 Dalmatians(2000) or The Jungle Book(1995)movies were!)
X-Men (2000)
x men
I didn't know what to expect from this film .........I was never sure if i liked it or not. It just seemed like it could've flowed better -- other comic book movies like first 3 Superman movies and the first 2 Batman films blow "X-Men" out of the Water ........but X-Men isn't all that bad....it has several good parts.
X2 (2003)
A Huge Improvemnt over the first film
I was never sure if I liked X-Men 1 or not...But there is no doubt that I like the sequel.this is a good movie with a lot of action, some funny humor and a good plot ..I felt that the plot, humor and action were all week in the original)))) but Oh! the sequel makes up for it! --- go see it
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
The Rise of Mediorcredy
Coming Soon- Terminator 4 : Warriors of the Wasteland ???? Not really, I just made that title up.... But that was exactly how I felt after the somber (cliffhanger without actually being a cliffhanger) ending.
I went to this with an open mind (since Jim Cameron didn't produce it). After all, didn't Jim Cameron have a breakthrough success with "ALIENS"...and he didn't produce the first one... so I kept an open mind
This one had much more humor in it than the 2 previous films, the whole theater erupted with uncontrollable laughter at the "TALK TO THE HAND!" scene at the beginning of the film. The chase scene was great too (MATRIX 2's chase scene blows T3's chase Scene away). and yes the plot did have some holes.... but I can over look those holes because the plot holes seem to be what keeps the story line going from one film to the next (in other words, plot holes are a necessary evil if you want to keep the story going).
I couldn't help but feel like this film was acting as a bridge story that is setting the stage for future Terminator movies (probably without Arnald)that will take place in the futuristic post nuclear war landscape where humans are fighting the war against the machines....
In a strange kinda way, I hope that is exactly what is happening with this franchise... we'll see in the future
I give this film 7 out of 10 stars -go see it, its pretty good
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Why all of the hate?
The first X-Men movie was just okay (so-so)
The second X-Men movie was really-really good
But the third X-Men movie was the best of the series.
These movie kept getting better with each new one that they made. Usually it works the other way around. X3 was great. I was however surprised when some of the main characters were killed off early in the movie.
::::::::spoiler alert:::::::::: Dr. Jean Grey has been resurrected from the dead and now she has the personality of the Pheonix spirit that has taken over her personality. In other words she becomes evil. and Megneto and his band of outlaw the Mutants rally around her and create chaos. and its up to the last remaining/surviving X- Men to stop her.
this movie is way better than either of its prequels ... this movie is great. It is a must see for any fan of comic book movies or superheros.
The Dukes of Hazzard (2005)
It's dem Duke Boys, well ... sorta
Not as bad as everyone says this movie is.
************************************************The first thing I notice when I read all of the negative comments about this movie, the writer always points out that he or she was a HUGE fan of the show way back when.........One of the things You have to remember is that absence makes the heart grow fonder.......and with the Dukes of Hazzard TV Show being off of the air since the mid '80's ...these people have watched reruns over and over and these probably undoubtedly remember the TV show as being far better than it actually was(or at least in their minds anyway). ******************************************************************** *
I liked the Dukes of Hazzard movie. I liked the sex jokes (I was slightly disappointed that there was no serious nudity shown in the film). I thought the drug humor was indeed funny (not enough of it)
BUT! ! ! ! having said that......... I also believe they could have made this same movie and not have used the "Dukes of Hazzard" name, likeness or characters .... Because I also understand that "Dukes of Hazzard" has a lot of appeal to children(mainly boys between ages 10 and 14) , and to use the Dukes of Hazzard as a show case for "Sex, Drugs, & Rock'N Roll" really isn't the message we should be giving our youths. Showing the Duke boys smoking weed and getting laid probably wasn't the right thing to do.........
.....although I really did like this movie and thought it was very funny, I still think that they should've made this movie with it's own identify. Because this same movie could've been made without the Dukes of Hazzard name on it, and it would have been just as good.
The Trench (1999)
Expected a masterpiece and got a snoozefest
I purchased a copy of this long, boring slow film after talking to a member of the Memphis Grizzlies NBA basketball team (who will remain nameless) on an airplane trip from Denver back to Memphis. He said it was a great film and one that he enjoyed. I thought to myself that someone of his stature has all the time in the world to watch all kinds of movies (during the basketball off season)... I was surprised to hear him speak to me about his passion for war movies and how much he recommended this one.....
he must've watched a different movie than I did. this movie started out like it was going to be very good, but then no real story developed. It did have some good aspects such as the dirty and gritty movie set, the realistic lingo and the grueling sounds, and it is very historically accurate... they did that stuff well in this movie. ...the problem with this movie is that it just doesn't develop a story, and it turns into 2 hours of nothing. ...I kept waiting for something to happen ..and it never did.
I had to purchase a copy of it because none of the video rental places had a copy to rent... don't buy this movie
Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979)
Riff Randle
I liked this movie I remember there was one very well done scene in this movie where Riff Randell (played by P.J. Soles) is lying in her bed smoking pot and then she begins to visualize that the Ramones are in the room with her sing the song "I Want You Around" ...very very cool stuff.
It was fun, energetic, quirky and cool. Yes I'll admit that the ending is way-way over the top and far fetched ...but it doesn't matter because it is fun this is a very fun movie. It's Sex, Pot and Rock n Rocll forever
I read that Cheap Trick was the band who was originally to star in this ..But I do not know if this is true or not
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
New Adventures of an Old Man
*** This review may contain spoilers ***
In the last 18 months we have been exposed to Re-treads at the box office. Old actors reprising old roles in new movies. We have had Rocky 6(a.k.a. Rocky Balboa), Die Hard 4(a.k.a. Live Free or Die Hard)Rambo 4 (a.k.a. RAMBO) and now Indiana Jones 4 (a.k.a Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls).
It comes without say, that Indiana Jones 4 was the one of these 4 re-tread movies I had the highest expectations for, and Rambo 4 was the one that I had the least expectations for. - And Boy did I ever get it backwards.
Rambo 4 was an action packed no holds barred thrill ride, with a great story. Full of Brutal action, great plot, all too realist battles scenes, and believable realistic characters.
Harrison Ford wasn't as lucky as Sylvester Stallone, despite the fact that he had Steven Spielberg and George Lucas both in his corner and pulling all of the strings. Indiana Jones 4 was awful. I loved the original 3 movies with a passion and consider them among the greatest movies of all time. How could the dream team of Speilber, Lucas and Ford make a Indiana Jones movie that was actually bad. It doesn't seem fathomable - but they did.
In this re-tread. Indy has a son who is a Fonzy wanna be(from Happy Days)...I was willing to except some silliness. I was excepted the Russians breaking into Area 51, and then Indy survives a Nuclear blast by hiding in a fridge. - Okay, I am willing to except that... But then this movie went into over the top in silly. Such as Indy's son and the villain sword fighting while standing on the hoods of moving cars, unbelievable acrobatics (the kind we saw in movies like MATRIX and Blade), then he got knocked off of the car, then he swang on vines like Tarzan until he caught up to the cars, then an army of Brazilian rain Forrest monkeys magically attack the Russians.... was this really written by adults. Then the grand finale of the film was the ancient Aztech pyramid that amazingly folds up into an alien flying saucer, then a magic earthquake comes and floods out the entire area, which Indy and his cohorts survive because the magical end up on top of a mountain after leaving the pyramid. >>> this movie was all about stunts, special effects without any relevance for reality.
Indiana Jones 4 is not totally awful, its just silly -
Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008)
... And
I just watched this for the first time today and I WAS BLOWN AWAY.
First, let me take a moment to reiterate that I loved the first film. In fact the first film is one of my all time favorite movies. I remember when I saw the first film that for the first time, I left the theater knowing that I had not had that much fun at a movie since I was a kid and saw Star Wars for the first time. I remember going to the movies back in 1997 and watching it 6 times at the theater. And then I purchased it just as soon as it was available on the home video market (which was predominately VHS back in 1997).
Then came Starship Troopers 2. It went directly to DVD, and was filmed as a low budget movie. Although I don't believe that Starship Troopers 2 is as bad as most people make it out to be, I will however agree that lacked any of the energy, feelings, excitement or the overall fun that the first film had. Although ST2 did have some good moments, what I disliked most about ST2 was the fact that the story went off into a silly direction with the mindcontrol bugs. And once the mindcontrol plot started, the movie's plot never got it's feet back on the ground. And when ST2 ended, you almost wished that never made it(for the sake of the original). In a way, ST2 tarnished the legacy of the first film.
However Today I watched ST3. Like the second film, ST3 also was a direct video release. With that in mind, I lowered my expectations based on the mediocre job they did on ST2. ........AND THEN I WAS BLOWN AWAY. This film is a worthy sequel to the original film. The movie is great. I would have gladly paid to seen this movie in theaters. The special effects are good, the story has a plot twist, and it is excellent. Lots of good action. GREAT SCREENPLAY! My only two complaints is that I would have liked to have seen a larger battle at the end of the movie...but thats okay, ..My other complaint is that they didn't use any of the original movies' brilliant musical score....but that's okay too...because I was just thrilled that that this movie was good.
If ST2 tarnished the legacy of the first film, then ST3 restores it
