Perfectly captures the cosmic horror genre
4 October 2022
His movie is a great example of how to adapt a written story to cinema. Yes, it makes changes to the source material, but they all fit in nicely in the story, which itself captures the tone, intent and general vibe of the original story almost perfectly.

The visuals are mostly excellent. The photography is beautiful, but also eerie and somewhat unsettling (as it should be for this story). Some of the computer graphics are not great, but they don't happen that often.

The soundtrack also nails the cosmic horror vibe, and helps drive the movie's atmosphere and growing sense of dread.

The entire cast delivers great performances (the child actor is not great, but not terrible either), and Nic Cage was just perfectly for this role.

My only criticism would be towards the creatures. Not that they look bad, but I think they shouldnt have been shown as much, leaving in just the scenes that would give us some glimpses of them, and leaving the rest of the monstrosities to our imagination.

Overal, great movie. Visually beautiful, really well acted, paced flawlessly and super creepy.

All of Us Are Dead (2022– )

From heart-wrenching tragedy, to goofy comedy, to horrific violence, this show will take you on an emotional journey
31 January 2022
At a time where the zombie apocalypse scenarios seems already saturated and overdone, there comes a show that breathes some new life (ironic, I know) into the genre.

All of Us Are Dead is an extremely well-made show that nails pretty much everything it sets out to do. The action is almost constante and relentless, but they still find time to work some effective and really well written drama, excellent characters and even some goofy comedy scenes.

There's a lot to love here, but I think what really makes this show works is the characters. In a similar vein to Stranger Things' first season, they managed to create some really compelling and emotionally engaged cast of characters. The teenagers are not unsufferable assholes like in most shows, instead they feel like real people, with real issues and strenghts, and you really want to see them succeed and escape.

It's one of those shows merely talking about it doesn't really does it justice. It can even sound kind of dumb in paper, but once you see it action on the screen, you get mesmerized. The people behind this show really pulled off some bold and creative ideas that many other would've easily screw up.

Especial credits must be given to the young cast of actors, who not only have stellar dramatic performance, but also some incredibly physical stunt work and zombie sequences.

The only downsides I can think of are some (very) minor plot holes and the fact that the show does get a little tiny bit repectitive. Other than that, this is a must watch, especially for genre fans.

Unusual creative choices - both good and bad
22 January 2022
As far as hollywood adaptations of videogames, this is not the worst thing in the world. It is surprisingly faithful on some aspects (but still needlessly divergent on others), and have some honestly good dialogue, pacing and cinematography.

Sadly, the movie adapts a Jon Woo-inspired action packed game into a slow paced noir thriller with only a handful of shootouts. A bold choice to be sure, but maybe not the best one.

It seems for everything the film does right, it does another one wrong, which makes it feel like it's constantly stuck in second gear. The very definition of a middle of the road movie.

Decent enough action thriller with a generic plot
18 December 2021
This movie has a lot going for it. Stylish direction, good acting, well-crafted action scenes. It just lacks in the plot department. It's a very generic plot that everyone's seen a million times: Special agent working for western intelligence agencies against evil commies, with all the obligatory twists and turns. If that sort of thing floats your boat, you might get more enjoyment out of it.

Somehow this movie got a lot of comparisons to John Wick, which is a disservice both to the viewer and the movie itself. This is a very different type of movie. Yes, it has some brutal and stylistic action scenes, but those are few and far between. This is a spy movie first, and action movie a distant second. If you watch it expecting it to be something like John Wick, you're going to be dissapointed.

Anyway, decent movie that gets carried more by its style and acting than the story itself.

Mortal Kombat (2021)

Hollywood's at it again
1 May 2021
Seems like people are giving this high ratings just because it has violence in it. The old movie from the 90's didn't have a single drop of blood in it and still managed to be a better Mortal Kombat movie than this crap.

Plot is absolutely horrible. It's incredible to see how professional hollywood writers, people who get paid tens of thousands of dollars to make this, can take a dumb plot from a 30 year old videogame and somehow manage to make it worse. Not to mention everything is delivered in such a corny way by a cast who can barely act.

This movie look like what would happen if an AI was trying to make a stereotypical bad hollywood videogame adaptation.

  • Butchered storyline and characters? Check.

  • Protagonist is a movie-only character who barely fit in the universe, while other beloved characters are thrown to the sidelines? Check.

  • Horrible acting? Check.

  • Random lines and nods from the game that makes you cringe? Check.

And on top of everything, the action also sucked. The fight scenes were so badly directed, full of continuity errors and weird cuts, with sometimes the characters being at a differente spot in the scenary than they were in the previous scene.

Even if you're not familiar with the source material and wouldn't be bothered by their "reimagining" of the story, this is just a bad movie. Badly acted, poorly written and badly directed. Skip this one.

The Witcher: Bottled Appetites (2019)
Season 1, Episode 5

The best episode so far
26 December 2019
This has to be the best episode so far, and at a good time too, since the last few episodes have been quite lacking.

There's a lot more respect to the source material in this episode, especially Geralt and Yennefer's story. Geralt's witty and dry personality is in full display here, instead of the brooding, edgy hero who only communicates in grunts they were portraying him as. His dialogue with Yennefer is excellent, and the overall plot is very faithful to the short story (which, in my opinnion, is the best one from The Last Wish).

Ciri's plotline continues to be uninteresting as hell though. I really don't understand the choice to include this plotline at all in this season so far. It has only contributed to the convoluted timeline. Maybe it's because she's a beloved character from the third game.

Also, have to say one thing, Henry Cavill's acting shows its limitations a few times this episode. The scene where he takes Jaskier to the doctor, he has the most neutral, monotonous "nothing" expression possible. I know, Witchers aren supposed to have extremely subdued emotions, but still... Not even a slight frown of worry or distress.

Still, great episode. Just when I was thinking about dropping the show. Let's hope it keeps up for the next episodes.

Might be picking up, still fairly "meh"
24 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
In this episode we got to focus a little bit more on Geralt's plotline, which allowed the adaptation to be slightly more faithful to the book (with a few creative freedoms nonetheless).

Seems like the show is just now starting to sew all these elements together, but it feels so clumsy. Why was Jaskier there now, if in the last episode there was no sign of him? Are they jumping back and forth in chronology even inside each plotline? Sheesh, talk about pointless convolution. Maybe they're trying to do something similar to the first collection of short stories, but with way less finesse.

Yennefer's plot skipped 30 years ahead, and was kind of pointless. Will have to wait and see if anything explored there pays off. Cirilla's plotline, on the other hand, is becoming just plain boring. Her character seem to lack any motivation or sense of agency. She just stumbles from scene to scene.

Aaaanyway, I'm being harsh, but this episode was definetely better than the previous one. But to me, this show in general is just swinging between mediocre and okay.

The worst so far.
23 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was the worst so far. No doubt.

The same problems with the previous episodes. Weird pacing, weird chronological storytelling. At least this time they gave some sort of a hint that things are happening at different times. Still clumsy.

Geralt's story was dumbed down to its bares and had some really dumb and pointless changes. Why was Triss there? (and I'm sorry, the actress is competent enough, but terrible casting choice).

The show still looks good and is decently acted, but this episode was just boring and frustrating. I hope it gets better.

The Witcher: Four Marks (2019)
Season 1, Episode 2

A step down from the first episode
23 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The show continues to give no sense of chronology to the events, which is becoming weirder and weirder.

Still avarege to decent acting, but the guy who plays Jaskier was quite good. And what a great singing voice, too!

Again, Geralt's part was rather shallow compared to the source material. His back and forth with the Elf in the book is great, and in here it just felt like good guy Geralt was giving life advice to angry bitter elf. BUT - as long as we are talking about dialogue - his first conversation with the Sylvan is pure gold.

Yennefer's bit was interesting, but with such a weird pacing. So much stuff happening so fast. Her relationship with what's-his-face escalated so quickly, it was almost cringe-worthy (I hate this term, but it's undenyably appliable here).

All in all, this episode was ok, but definitely a step down from the first one.

The Witcher: The End's Beginning (2019)
Season 1, Episode 1
7/10
A nice, if somewhat unremarkable, start
23 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The series is apparently being divided in three plotlines: Geralt, Yennefer and Cirilla. Each of these are set at a different time in the story, but the show doesn't really do anything to explain it, which was extremely weird to me. I picked up on it fairly soon, but that's because I'm familiar with the source material. I don't know how someone who has never read the books could've noticed it.

The show has some high production values, which make it look pretty good most of the time. Some of the CGI for magic effects are kinda cheap, but nothing that will make your eyes roll. As far as sets, clothes, equipment, etc. all looks very good.

Avarege to decent acting for most of the cast. Henry Cavill is obviously trying to play Geralt like we see him in The Witcher III, and I gotta say he's pretty spot on at times. That being said, he does look and sound kind of robotic sometimes.

The story itself is mostly well-adapted. They skipped over some details from the "Butcher of Blavikhen" short-story that gave it a lot of depth, and the end result was something that was kind of shallow and a bit illogical (like, why were the guys at the market in the end? The book explains it, the show didn't, and it's fairly central to the story)

Overall, a nice start. Some great action sequences, decent acting, decent plot, even with the weird timeline stuff. Will continue to watch

Stan Against Evil (2016–2018)
8/10
Similar to Evil Dead, but not a ripoff!
3 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Right, so first things first: This isn't a total ripoff from Ash vs Evil Dead.

It really seems that way with the name being so similar, and then you go on to read the summary where it says it's about a reluctant aging hero fighting off infernal foes. But the similarities kind of end right there. Now, there isn't to say that there are no similarities with the Evil Dead franchise. The one-liners are there, the make up effects, the camera angles borrowed directly from Raimi's bag of tricks. But, watching the show, this all feels a lot more like homages and references to the Evil Dead (and other horror classics) than a blatant ripoff. As the pilot progresses, we come to see that the story does have it's own thing going on. And Sheriff Miller himself is pretty different from Ash. He's way less immoral and bohemian, and way smarter. He's kind of a retired badass. Now that I think of it, he shares way more similarities with Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley's character in Scrubs) than to Ash.

But that's enough about the show's relation to AVED. Let's move on.

First off, the acting in this one is top notch, specially for a (apparently) low-budget show. John McGinley delivers a spot on interpretation as Sheriff Stan Miller (but then again, the character does fall directly into his playhouse). Deborah Baker and Nate Mooney also give very endearing and funny performances during their quick, yet very entertaining screen time.

The comedy part of the show is great. It didn't have me rolling of laughter or anything, but the writing and jokes are pretty witty and with excellent timing. And the horror part of the show is surprisingly strong too. The second episode has one very interesting scene that I won't spoil. The creepy scenes are full of atmosphere, and the excellent (and quite unique) soundtrack only adds to the mood.

I do have two complaints about the show though: First, 20 minutes per episode is quite short for this kind of show, and because of that, the first episode had some pacing issues. Sometime a lot of stuff happened in a short period of time, and some of the plot elements didn't really had enough time to establish themselves in a satisfying and "believeble" way. The second episode does have way better pacing though. The second complaint I have is about the action sequences. I think the big baddies of each episode deserved a way more climatic and intense battle before they were dispatched, to give the show more intensity, but that really wasn't the case. Well, I hope the coming episodes features more hard hitting battles.

All in all, this show is a delight for horror fans. It's funny, it's creepy. And if you're an Evil Dead fan like I am, I think you will enjoy the references and the similar tone like I did.
