We Are Who We Are (2020)
Every episode was a dream
There is something about Luca's work that is absolutely transcending and this was no different. Personally I enjoyed the characters, the relationships, the development, and the performances but even if I hated all of those things, the cinematography would have been enough to keep me hooked. You can't watch it and not appreciate it as beautiful moving art (even if you hate everything else). If you only care about moving the plot forward and being "entertained" than this is not the show for you (which is fine) but if unique characters intrigue you or if you do appreciate cinematic GREATness than give it a shot.
F*&% the Prom (2017)
If you didn't like it, you didn't understand it
I feel like I have to defend this film. This movie was fantastic and the people that are saying otherwise simply did not understand it. Yes, the film has what can be seen as some "stupid" lines but I just think that is the type of humor they were going for. This movie is extra dramatic to exaggerate the high school experience and for humor purposes. Obviously most high schoolers don't go around taking 40-50 selfies at a time or only talk in text abbreviations but social media is a huge thing in high schools now and it seemed to me that the writers were poking fun at that idea, not encouraging it. Then on top of the comedy, they managed to have a good underlying message. Also, I can agree that some of the acting needed work but the main character, Cole (Joel Courtney) did a fantastic job at playing a high schooler who is pissed off at the world and I applaud his performance.
Truth or Dare (2018)
Poorly made but entertaining
This movie was genuinely not good but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it.
There were lots of problems with the plot development and the character development. There were too many cheesy moments and most of the scary moments were seen as funny. With all of that being said, I was genuinely entertained by the movie and I thought there were some clever moments and some good creepy scenes. I don't know if I would see it again but I'm not mad that I saw it in theaters either.
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
LO-LO-LOVED it
This series truly masters the mixture of dark humor and a good message. I was able to laugh while feeling scared while also adoring the characters. I also appreciate how unique the show is. They were able to take the pretty common concept of love and make into something new and exciting. I enjoyed watching it very much and would reccomend it to anyone who loves love, humor, and horror.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
A sacred world has been created
This movie felt less like a movie and more like an experience. I felt as though I was there and this is the first time I have really ever experienced that while watching a film.
Before I saw the film, I was a little aprehensive thinking that it might be slow or that there might not be enough of a story to tell but I cannot say how wrong I was. Two hours and seventeen minutes of raw human emotion was displayed in the film and it was done in the most thoughtful of ways.
I will say that one of my favorite parts of the film was watching Timothée Chalamet play his role of Elio. He was stunning in every way possible. He truly brought the character to life, making me not only believe everything he was feeling but making me feel everything. With the help of the script and the cinematography, he took me on an emotional roller coaster that finished with the brutal but brilliant ending of watching him stare into the fire for four minutes with the only other variable being the music.
This is now my transition into the perfectly crafted music. The music is another aspect of the film that is my favorite. Every song is smart and makes sense for the scene and for the characters which is extremely impressive. I will forever cherish the music used in this film because of how emotionally attached it is to the characters and to the story.
This movie isn't afraid to move slowly and to give the audience time to truly understand how the characters are feeling. The dancing scene is another one of my favorites because of how much time is taken to show Elio's reaction to watching Oliver dance. Genius. Absolute genius.
