Good Omens (2019)
S2 is an emotional rollercoaster
Season one was a light-hearted, funny lead-up to the end of the world, but the viewers could always sense that everything would be alright in the end.
Season two has a totally different tone than expected, and while I do miss Pratchett's zany influence, the writing is captivating and the story well-paced. And the cliffhanger is heartbreaking.
S2 is the dark horse middle part of the story, the heartbreak before the happy ending, and it delivers the heartbreak VERY well.
There are so many hints, clues, and red herrings that leave us wondering what S3 has in store. (And there had better be a S3! If not, I will raze a small city with my wrath!!)
A Nun's Curse (2019)
Not worth the watch
The premise is not original, but something that could be a good watch if done well.
This was not done well.
The pacing was totally off - nothing happens for a long time, and this setup does nothing to add to the suspense. When things start happening, it goes too quickly. The viewer doesn't have time to develop a sense of fear or suspense.
The acting is mediocre, with mostly cliched characters. The main female character (the bookish younger sister) shows very little emotion, even during a couple of the obvious "scary" scenes. I could tell where I was supposed to feel scared, but never actually anything near scared.
The creature makeup is a mess - looks decent in dark lighting, but when the creature is better lit, it looks very amateurish.
And, what I think were meant to be the movie's "plot twist/insightful lesson" near the end was just a muddled mush of confusing ideas. The writers were trying to make a profound point, and just ended up making a profound mess.
I stuck through the movie because I'm stubborn, but I actually couldn't wait for it to end. Don't feel obligated to watch this movie to the end - it does not get interesting, it does not get better, it does not redeem itself.
Le secret de ma mère (2006)
Ahh... the joys of family
While watching this movie, I can't tell you how many times I thought to myself 'This character completely reminds me of so-and-so' or, 'Wow, something almost exactly like that has happened to someone I know'. Now, not to say that my life is *exactly* like this movie (that would be a bit to scary), but there are many elements that I think most of us can relate to, and that is what makes this movie so intriguing and thought-provoking.
The characters were believable, and easy to identify with, which I think always makes for a good movie. The story starts out almost comedic, almost light-hearted, all things considered, but does not stay that way. The main critiques that I would have so far would be that it was sometimes difficult to keep track of the female characters (as there were a fair few of them and they used completely different actors for the flashback sequences) and that a few of the scenes were almost painfully absurd. All in all, a wonderful film which shows that there is no such thing as a perfect family, that nothing is what it seems and that life doesn't end when you die.
