Mixed Bag of Action and Emotion
1 October 2023
Without a doubt, it's an excellent action film with some of the best stunts in the series, but as a Mission: Impossible film, it felt like a slight step backward for the series. In addition to growing Ethan's friendship with Ilsa, giving Julia closure, showcasing the lengths he would go to protect those closest to him, and squaring off against an intimidating foe, Fallout included mind-blowing action sequences and stunt work. To display action extravaganza after action spectacle while forgoing character development, Dead Reckoning: Part One splits the movie into two parts. Characters whom I have grown to love over a decade of movies feel wasted, neglected, or neglected. Although Hayley Atwell's new character was wonderful and took up most of the screen time, I would have preferred to see more of the original cast. The new bad guy possessed an erratic ability that confused people more than terrified them. There were a few crucial emotional turning points that I simply didn't feel the weight of when I should have. Unfortunately, I was left wanting more from this one. Part Two might wrap everything up and help me appreciate Part One more in the future.

Must-Watch for Fans of Engaging Plots and Strong Performances
25 September 2023
Jaideep Ahlawat gives an outstanding performance, deftly capturing minute details like his character's understanding of Maya's (Kareena) true feelings, which is evident in his reactions throughout. Jaideep's interactions with the students are delightfully joyful. This movie is a definite must-watch because it has a compelling plot.

While Vijay's performance creates an enduring memory, Kareena fits into her character perfectly and becomes simply another name in the crowd. The director does a fantastic job of making sure there aren't too many songs.

If you're looking for a movie with an engaging plot and strong performances, you must watch this one.

A Heart-Wrenching Tale of Love and Survival
24 September 2023
Set against the backdrop of World War II in Japan, the film follows the journey of Seita and Setsuko, two young siblings struggling to survive in a war-ravaged country. Their bond is the emotional core of the film, and it's impossible not to be deeply moved by their unwavering love for each other.

The animation, while visually stunning, serves a somber purpose - to vividly depict the harsh realities of war, from the firebombings that tear their world apart to the scarcity of food and shelter. Every scene is filled with raw emotion, making it impossible to watch without shedding tears.

Yet, amidst the despair, "Grave of the Fireflies" offers glimmers of hope. It reminds us of the strength of the human spirit and the resilience of children in the face of unimaginable adversity. The film's message is clear: love and family are beacons of light in the darkest of times.

This cinematic masterpiece is a testament to the power of storytelling. It serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of war on innocent lives and the importance of cherishing the moments of love and kindness, no matter how fleeting they may be.

"Grave of the Fireflies" is not just a movie; it's an emotional journey that will stay with you forever. It's a heart-wrenching, beautiful, and ultimately life-affirming tale that should be seen by all. Be prepared to be moved, touched, and forever changed by this remarkable work of art.

Live-Action Pirate Adventure That Sets Sail
20 September 2023
One Piece live-action adaptation captures the spirit of the original with its colorful characters, exciting action, and heartwarming moments. Iñaki Godoy shines as Luffy, and the supporting cast is also great. The production values are high, with impressive sets, costumes, and CGI. The action sequences are well-choreographed and exciting. And the score is great, with a mix of catchy tunes and emotional pieces. While the show does make some changes to the original material, and the pacing can be slow at times, overall it's a fun and exciting adaptation that will appeal to fans of the original material, as well as newcomers to the world of One Piece.

Ode to Joy (I) (2019)

A Quirky Romantic Comedy with a Heart
12 September 2023
Ode to Joy is a 2019 romantic comedy about a man named Charlie (Martin Freeman) who has cataplexy, a condition that causes him to faint whenever he experiences strong emotions, particularly joy. As a result, Charlie has become a risk-averse person who avoids anything that could make him happy. But when he meets a woman named Francesca (Morena Baccarin), Charlie finds himself falling in love, even though he knows that it could be dangerous for him.

The film is a bit quirky and offbeat, but it also has a lot of heart. Freeman gives a charming performance as Charlie and Baccarin are equally good as Francesca. The supporting cast is also strong, with Jake Lacy and Melissa Rauch providing some much-needed comic relief.

Ode to Joy is not a perfect film, but it is a sweet and funny story about the power of love. If you are looking for a romantic comedy that is a little bit different, then this is one you should check out.

Martin Freeman's performance as Charlie is heartwarming and relatable. Morena Baccarin is charming and funny as Francesca. The supporting cast is also good, especially Jake Lacy and Melissa Rauch.

The plot is a bit predictable.

Overall, I enjoyed Ode to Joy. It is a sweet and funny story about the power of love. If you are looking for a romantic comedy that is a little bit different, then this is one you should check out.

A Rollercoaster of Laughter and Nostalgia!
12 September 2023
"99" (2009) is a delightful time capsule that whisks us back to the late '90s, capturing the spirit of the era with infectious charm. Directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D. K., this Bollywood gem revolves around two best friends, Sachin (Kunal Khemu) and Zaramud (Cyrus Broacha), whose lives are intertwined with cricket betting during the 1999 World Cup.

The film brilliantly encapsulates the essence of the late '90s, from the chunky mobile phones to the baggy fashion trends. It immerses us in the world of Delhi, a city buzzing with energy and dreams, perfectly setting the stage for our protagonists' adventures.

Kunal Khemu and Cyrus Broacha steal the show with their impeccable comic timing and bromance. Khemu's portrayal of Sachin, a small-time hustler who reluctantly becomes a hero, is a standout. Broacha's wit and humor add layers of laughter to the narrative, making their friendship the film's beating heart.

The supporting cast is equally impressive. Boman Irani, as the eccentric bookie, adds depth to the story, while Soha Ali Khan shines as the mysterious Simone, infusing grace and charm into her character. Mahesh Manjrekar's AGM is a compelling blend of cunning and charisma, making him a formidable presence on screen.

A Darkly Hilarious Thrill Ride!
10 September 2023
I recently had the pleasure of watching "Dead in a Week (Or Your Money Back)," and let me tell you, it's a rollercoaster of dark humor, unexpected twists, and heartwarming moments that you won't want to miss. This film takes the concept of a professional hitman and flips it on its head, delivering a unique and surprisingly endearing story that will keep you entertained from start to finish.

The movie revolves around the life of William (Aneurin Barnard), a young writer who just can't seem to get his life together. He's faced with constant failure and despair until he stumbles upon Leslie (Tom Wilkinson), a seasoned contract killer who offers him an unusual proposition: he'll guarantee William's death within a week, or else he'll get his money back. What follows is a darkly comedic journey filled with unexpected friendships, self-discovery, and a series of hilariously failed suicide attempts.

One of the film's standout aspects is its brilliant cast. Aneurin Barnard embodies the character of William with a perfect blend of charm and vulnerability, making it impossible not to root for him as he navigates the absurdity of his predicament. Tom Wilkinson's portrayal of Leslie is equally captivating, as he brings depth and complexity to a character who, despite his profession, has a code of ethics and a wry sense of humor that will leave you in stitches.

The humor in "Dead in a Week" is refreshingly dark and sharp. The film skillfully finds humor in the darkest corners of life, exploring topics that might seem taboo with a light-hearted touch that never feels disrespectful. It manages to balance the comedic elements with genuinely touching moments, allowing the audience to connect with the characters on a deeper level.

Director Tom Edmunds deserves praise for his ability to seamlessly blend different tones and genres. He keeps the pacing tight, the dialogue witty, and the plot constantly moving forward, ensuring that you'll be on the edge of your seat throughout the film. The cinematography and soundtrack also enhance the overall experience, adding to the film's unique atmosphere.

"Dead in a Week (Or Your Money Back)" is a dark comedy that manages to be both thought-provoking and uproarious. It explores themes of mortality, purpose, and the absurdity of life in a way that is both entertaining and poignant. This is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and contemplate the meaning of it all-often all within the same scene.

In a world full of formulaic films, "Dead in a Week" stands out as a breath of fresh air. It's a movie that takes risks, challenges conventions, and leaves you with a smile on your face. So, don't miss your chance to experience this darkly hilarious thrill ride; it's well worth the price of admission, and if you don't enjoy it, you can always ask for your money back (but I doubt you'll want to).

Haddi (2023)
8/10
A Trans Woman's Revenge
10 September 2023
The film begins with Harika's childhood, when she is forced to live as a boy because of her gender identity. She is bullied and abused by her classmates and teachers, and her own family rejects her. As she grows up, she becomes a prostitute and a body snatcher, but she never gives up hope of finding a place where she belongs.

When Harika meets Irfan (Ayyub), a kind-hearted NGO worker, she finally feels like she has found a home. However, Irfan is murdered by a group of land-grabbers, and Harika vows to get revenge. She joins a gang of transgender women and cross-dressers, and they set out to take down the land-grabbers.

Haddi is a gritty and violent film, but it is also a powerful story of resilience and hope. Nawazuddin Siddiqui gives a tour-de-force performance as Harika, and the film's supporting cast is also excellent. Verma's direction is assured, and he does a great job of capturing the harsh realities of life for transgender people in India.

Haddi is not a perfect film, but it is an important one. It is a rare film that tells the story of a transgender woman from her own perspective, and it does so with compassion and understanding. The film is a must-watch for anyone who wants to learn more about the transgender community and the challenges they face.

Some other things to keep in mind about the film:

The film's title, Haddi, means "bone" in Hindi. This is a reference to Harika's strength and resilience, as well as the violence that she experiences throughout the film.

The film is set in the murky world of Gurgaon and Noida, two satellite cities of Delhi. These cities are known for their rapid development and their growing inequality, which are both factors that contribute to the marginalization of transgender people.

The film features a diverse cast of transgender actors, including Aqsa Siddiqui, Anjali Lama, and Kalki Koechlin. This is a significant step forward for Indian cinema, which has traditionally been very underrepresented when it comes to transgender representation.

Overall, Haddi is a powerful and important film that is sure to spark conversation and debate. It is a must-watch for anyone who wants to learn more about the transgender community and the challenges they face.

A Rocky Start, But a Rani-ing Conclusion
9 September 2023
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is a labor of love for Karan Johar, who has been working on the film for over a decade. It's a sprawling, ambitious film that tries to do a lot, and it doesn't always succeed. But when it does, it's a joy to watch.

The film stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt as Rocky and Rani, two star-crossed lovers from different worlds. Rocky is a flamboyant Punjabi boxer, while Rani is an intellectual Bengali journalist. They fall in love despite their differences, but their families are opposed to their relationship.

The film's first half is a bit of a mess. The story is slow to get going, and the characters are not always well-developed. But the second half is much stronger. The film finds its footing and becomes a truly enjoyable romantic comedy.

The film's biggest strength is its cast. Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt are both excellent, and they have great chemistry together. They are supported by a strong ensemble cast, including Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan.

The film's music is also a highlight. The songs are catchy and well-placed, and they help to move the story along.

Overall, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is a flawed but enjoyable film. It's not Karan Johar's best work, but it's a step in the right direction. Fans of the director's work will find much to enjoy, and newcomers may be surprised by how much they like it.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
8/10
A Cinematic Masterpiece
9 September 2023
Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is a sweeping, epic film that tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who led the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb. The film is a complex and challenging work, but it is also a deeply moving and thought-provoking one.

Nolan's filmmaking is at its best in Oppenheimer. He uses his trademark visual style to create a sense of awe and wonder, while also conveying the weight of the responsibility that Oppenheimer felt. The film is beautifully shot and edited, and the performances are all top-notch.

Cillian Murphy gives a tour-de-force performance as Oppenheimer. He captures the physicist's brilliance, his charisma, and his inner turmoil. Emily Blunt is also excellent as Oppenheimer's wife, Katherine. The supporting cast is also strong, with Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh all giving memorable performances.

Oppenheimer is not an easy film to watch. It is a film about the darkest of times, and it does not shy away from the horrors of war. But it is also a film about hope, and about the power of the human spirit. It is a film that will stay with you long after you have seen it.

If you are looking for a challenging and thought-provoking film, then I highly recommend Oppenheimer. It is a cinematic masterpiece that will stay with you long after you have seen it.

Jawan: A Force for Good
8 September 2023
The film follows the story of a man who is set to rectify the wrongs in the society.

The film opens with a bang, with a thrilling action sequence involving Shah Rukh Khan. Khan is in top form, and he brings his trademark charisma and humor to the role. Vijay Sethupathi is also excellent as the villain, and he has some great chemistry with Khan. The supporting cast is also good, with Nayanthara, Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Sunil Grover, and Sanjay Dutt all giving solid performances.

The action sequences in Jawan are some of the best I've seen in a Bollywood film in recent years. They are well-choreographed and exciting, and they never feel over-the-top. The film also has a strong emotional core, and it deals with some important social issues.

Overall, Jawan is a satisfying and engaging action thriller. It is a must-see for fans of Shah Rukh Khan and Atlee.

Some of the things I liked about the film:

The action sequences are top-notch. Shah Rukh Khan is in top form. Vijay Sethupathi is excellent as the villain. The supporting cast is good. The film deals with some important social issues.

Some of the things I didn't like about the film:

The film is a bit overlong. The plot is a bit convoluted. Some of the dialogue is cheesy.

Overall, I enjoyed Jawan. It is a well-made action thriller with strong performances from the cast. I would recommend it to fans of Shah Rukh Khan and Atlee.

Here are some of the things that I think could have been improved:

The film could have been trimmed down by about 30 minutes. The plot could have been simplified a bit. Some of the dialogue could have been better.

Despite these flaws, I still enjoyed Jawan. It is a fun and exciting action thriller with a good message. I would recommend it to fans of Shah Rukh Khan and Atlee.

The film explores the themes of love, loss, and nostalgia, and it is a must-watch for anyone who has ever had a first love.

The film's strength lies in its screenplay and its performances. The screenplay is beautifully written, and it captures the essence of first love in a way that is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. The performances by Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan are also top-notch. They bring their characters to life with such tenderness and vulnerability that it is impossible not to root for them.

The film is also visually stunning. The cinematography is lush and evocative, and it perfectly captures the nostalgia of the 1990s. The music by Govind Vasantha is also a major highlight. The songs are beautiful and haunting, and they perfectly complement the film's emotional journey.

The movie Jailer (2023) is an action thriller in Tamil directed by Nelson and features Rajinikanth, Vinayakan, and Tamannaah Bhatia. It centers around a retired jailer who seeks revenge for his son's death, a police officer.

The Pope's Exorcist: Not a Masterpiece, But Still a Worthwhile Watch for Fans of the Genre
31 August 2023
The movie The Pope's Exorcist was directed by Julius Avery in 2023 and stars Russell Crowe, Peter Andersson, and Alex Essoe. It tells the story of Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican's chief exorcist, and his encounters with demonic possession.

Crowe plays Father Amorth, who investigates a series of possessions in Rome, aided by Father Vincent (Andersson), a young priest who is skeptical about exorcisms. The two clergymen face a formidable demon that possesses a young woman (Essoe).

The Pope's Exorcist is a well-made and suspenseful horror movie that delivers on its promise to scare viewers. Crowe's portrayal of Father Amorth is impressive, and the supporting cast is also commendable. The film is visually stunning, with some graphic and disturbing imagery.

However, it has its flaws. The plot is somewhat predictable, and the film relies too heavily on jump scares. Additionally, it presents a rather sanitized view of the Catholic Church, which may not sit well with some audiences.

Despite these shortcomings, The Pope's Exorcist is a decent horror movie that will satisfy fans of the genre. While not a masterpiece, it is a well-crafted and enjoyable film that will provide some thrills.

The New Frontier of Crime
31 August 2023
Billion Dollar Heist is a well-made documentary that tells the story of the biggest cyberheist in history. The film traces the origins of the crime, from the early days of credit card fraud to the sophisticated hacking techniques used to steal billions of dollars from the Bangladesh Central Bank.

The film does an excellent job of explaining the technical details of the crime in a way that is understandable to non-technical audiences. It also explores the hackers' motivations and the impact of the crime on the victims.

However, the film can be repetitive at times, and it does not provide conclusive answers on who was responsible for the heist. Despite these flaws, Billion Dollar Heist is a must-see for anyone interested in cybercrime or financial security.

The film is narrated by Bill Nighy, and it features interviews with experts in cybercrime, law enforcement, and the financial industry. The film also includes footage of the crime scene and the aftermath of the heist.

Billion Dollar Heist is a sobering reminder of the growing threat of cybercrime. The film shows how even the most secure financial institutions can be vulnerable to attack. The film is a wake-up call for businesses and individuals to take steps to protect themselves from cybercrime.

Overall, Billion Dollar Heist is a well-made and informative documentary that is essential viewing for anyone who wants to understand the threat of cybercrime.
