Alien: Covenant (2017)
Boring, predictable, mediocre
This movie should have been called Prometheus 2: it is more a spiritual sequel to Prometheus, than an addition to the Alien franchise.
When I first watched Prometheus, I was somewhat disappointed by the story, but the visuals, music, and the atmosphere still made up for what was missing: a good plot. Alien: Covenant, however, does not deliver even in these areas.
The characters are boring and forgettable, the plot "twists" can be seen a mile away, there is no atmosphere of horror, discovery or wonder. Action scenes are just plain bland, the CGI is mediocre. There were no tense moments.
While the cinematography and images are still beautiful, it is not enough, I don't really believe Ridley Scott directed this. There was so much potential in the scenes, but I felt like they deliberately made a choice to leave it uninspired.
I feel both this movie and Prometheus were based on the actor Michael Fassbender's fan base. Unfortunately, I do not find him sympathetic at all, and haven't seen any movies, where I've enjoyed his performance.
Kimi no na wa. (2016)
Beautifully animated, well built story
Having seen other movies (Garden of Words, 5 centimeters per second and Children Who Chase Lost Voices) from Makoto Shinkai, I've been prepared for the visual masterpiece that is Your Name, but the well built, interesting story was a pleasant surprise.
While his other movies were a bit slow or uninteresting for me, this one managed to get pacing and plot right, and was successful in keeping my interest, and managed to build a smart story from the corny body-switch basics.
I'm hesitating between 8 and 9 stars, as I've felt the story could have been a bit more complex, and there were some plot holes, that are not so easy to overlook. I'm giving it an 8, but a strong 8...
Stop reading, and just go see it already, it's worth it (japanese dub + subtitles).
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Fun, light version premake
I've been somewhat of a fan of the franchise, first seeing scenes from the original anime in a music video, then seeing it at a friend's place, then watching the GitS: SAC series when they came out, I've even played with the game on the PS1 - well that could have been left out. I haven't seen Arise yet.
I've been waiting for this title to come out, I've also been satisfied with the choice of Scarlett Johansson for the lead, I usually like her movie performances, but they are a bit light.
That is also the case here, she was nowhere close to the original badassery of the anime, she simply does not possess the physical weight and strength to pull off those moves.
So, I've sat down to watch the movie, and for some time I could not decide whether this was a prequel or a remake (or another parallel universe, as with SAC), as the character was very inexperienced, but the major plot points and visual elements were there - turned out to be a bit of both. I am OK with this, but I would have favored a live action remake.
The visuals, the sounds and music, the casting of characters and the atmosphere is very authentic (though faster in pace), cgi is sometimes a bit cheap, especially in contrast with the anime.
The story is a bit simplified from the original, but fun, and interesting with lots of well handled action.
In all, it is a fun, light action movie in a sci-fi setting, that is overshadowed by the original.
The Russian Woodpecker (2015)
Interesting Conspiracy Theory
The premise of this movie made in a documentary format is intriguing, and it is interesting to watch as the theory about the catastrophe at Chernobyl unfolds.
But that's it - interesting theory, no real facts, no reliable sources, no real technical or physical evidence. Not very convincing.
The "genius artist", who came up with the whole idea takes away a lot of the credibility with his artistic nonsensical performance as well.
So yeah, I'm not convinced.
The Lost City of Z (2016)
Glorious Disappointment
This movie represents everything I dislike about translating true stories into movies.
Glorious performance from actors, director, the music and costume department, and pretty much everyone else. But there is only so much to accomplish if the real life story is disappointing, to say the least.
While we have every element for a great movie, even such things as interesting characters or great focus on social themes and human nature, still the final product crumbles just because the story has no real ending, no epiphany, no closure.
Too long, too slow, builds to nothing, just some text at the end.
Just like this review.
The Jacket (2005)
Had potential, but did not grow up to the challenge
I've watched this movie out of desperation, as I've found nothing better I haven't seen before.
While it starts off boring, slowly it starts to get better, still fails to redeem itself. It was released in 2005, and I suspect it did not age well. There have been better thrillers about similar things - even before (like The Butterfly Effect or Frequency).
The main problem is that this movie is not smart, the main character does nothing to change his own fate (which he inadvertently does just to make the movie more cliché), and does not even think about what is happening. I did not feel challenged to think, there were no surprises or brilliant ideas that the genre would demand.
Adrien Brody does some very poor one-sided acting here and there, which I assume is fan service. The supporting actors are much more interesting, and deliver layered performances.
The music, script and directing, meh, all mediocre. The special effects are not bad for the time, but they serve no real purpose.
This could have been so much more if it dares to be philosophically challenging.
Castlevania (2017)
Bit immature, but a good.
As a long time fan of the game series, I've found the adaptation well made.
The characters are mostly true to their origins, and are likable. The animation is fluid, but a bit empty of emotion - the overall tone is great, the Gothic horror permeates the gory imagery.
The plot is solid, but a bit slow, and the ending of season 1 left me unsatisfied - hopefully season 2 will fill this void.
I've missed the theme music from the game.
I've found it a bit immature for my liking with the constant nuts kicking - I've been hoping for a darker, more serious, more emotionally exhausting Vampire Hunter D approach.
While I'm not in awe of the show, I will certainly watch season 2.
