Reacher (2022)
The first ever true-to-a-book movie.
Having read all of the Reacher books more than once, the only discrepancy between the movie and the books is that the later books have an aged Reacher, and this is the younger, original Reacher. This is so perfect, something I've never seen before in any book-to-movie production. The movie actors are all near enough in looks and actions to the book that there can't be any squabbles over the movie translation. Very well done.
A New Year's Resolution (2021)
Not Too Bad
Rady was a little too much of a happy puppy, Aimee was good (Note: It's Gung, or Kung, Hay Fa Choy - phonetically.) The tale was sweet and I liked the bank issue, a more realistic hard hitting story issue than is normally covered in these movies.
The Unholy (2021)
Maybe I'm Prejudiced As A Catholic
Parochial School run by Sisters, Altar Boy, Mom was secretary to the Bishop, read then watched the Exorcist and Omen and found I enjoyed those that were well done. Sure there is a lot of dreck out there, but there are also some that make me think based on my education and life experiences. Was this real? Absolutely not. But it was well done for the story and acting, but then I'm not a professional critic. I'm just someone that enjoys a good tale well told, and a movie well acted with great visuals, and with the remote possibility of reality, or not. I thought everyone in the movie from all of the leads to the supporting cast did an excellent job. Will it win any great award; probably not. But it is entertaining and scratches an itch. I didn't get up to get popcorn, I just enjoyed the movie. Very much. A Lot.
The Nevers (2021)
Not my kind of movie but Wow it is great
I am not a fan of period magical movies. I made an exception for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which I loved. This is different but it is just as captivating if not more so. The story and cast members mesh so perfectly that it forms something rare for TV. For me there are no one or two main characters. All of the actors, from the main leads of whom there are many, to those actors seen for only a few moments, create a believable reality despite obviously being not. It will leave a large hole in my viewing pleasure if it is not renewed.
Volcano: Fire on the Mountain (1997)
Really late to the show, but it's free and stupid
The beginning of the movie, a couple of minutes in, and the coordinates of the volcano are shown on the computer screen as Lat 23.75 degrees Lon 78.65 degrees which puts it in the middle of Sagar, India, not Angel Lake Peaks, California. I made it that far, but no farther.
Love, Fall & Order (2019)
Malpractice Abounds
Wow. The grounds for malpractice on both lawyers is huge. We should sue, or knock some review points off. Hadn't the two legal eagles ever heard of Adverse Ownership. If someone has possession of someone else's land they can acquire title if they occupy it continuously over a period established under the applicable period of limitations, generally 7 - 20 years, hostilely - infringing on the owner's rights, open and notorious, actual, and exclusively. Come on. All of those elements are obvious in the movie. The movie results are moot. It was obvious from the beginning, and though the characters were attractive, they lose points for "come on" reasons.
Space Force (2020)
Space Force Is No Office. Thank You
I am apparently in the minority here but I didn't care for the Office. Steve Carell's character in that was too one-dimensional; there was no redeeming quality to him. Space Force's General Naird has several qualities that provide a lot of interesting characteristics where he can turn on a dime from being an idiot trying to cue Dr Mallory into speaking by double tapping a pencil Naird alone had agreed to use as a signal when he got into a very tight spot, to giving a cogent and moving statement why an orange shipped into space for an astronaut at the cost of $10,000 was worth the cost.
We are given much more than a one-dimensional character in General Naird. It is worth watching to see what comes next. The chimponaut and dogonaut were conceptually horrifying at first, but the way it played out was interesting to watch and grudgingly acceptable.
From what I've seen this show bends the traditional and bizarre comedy structures in unpredictable ways that are entertaining. If he had given us an "Office" reboot I would have turned it off after the second unredeemable skit. Space Force has a blend that is interesting: enjoyable and disgusting, stupid and intelligent, inconsiderate and loving, and entertaining.
If you've gone through the third episode and you have not seen that this is that rare show where dichotomy prevails, tune out. Your loss.
Winter in Vail (2020)
Cutish
It wasn't bad, but not so good. I watch these to lift my spirits. Especially now. But Chelsea seemed so frequently dour even when she should have been reasonably happy. Maybe it was because she was thinking too hard. In the end discussing Altair and Vega as being romantically together she said. . . "it takes the starlight millions of years to get from here to there. Maybe they connected centuries ago, maybe they were just destined to be together." Since Altair is 17 light years away and Vega is 25 light years away, it only takes 17 and 25 years, respectively, for the light from those stars to get here. We would know in 17 to 25 years if they got together. And the light going from here to there tells us nothing, it's the light from there to here that tells us if they are together.. How can you maintain a romantic atmosphere when she's saying stuff like that; stuff that makes you say, "huh."
