Sealab 2021 (2000)
Second only to Aqua Teen, and then Shanks entered the scene
Sealab 2021 was first a quirky dub to a old kids show, but then became a show of its own.
This show was second to Aqua Teen Hunger Force as the funniest show on Adult Swim thanks to the funny characters. Sparks owns as the crippled assistant who was evil and only had one episode to himself. Seriously, the dude was underused. Quinn and Stormy were hilarious together and made for some funny moments, like the Brainswitch episode or more specific, the Lost In Time story where there were constantly living the same 15 minutes to save the lab. But what really made the show watchable was Captain Murphy. He was paranoid, stupid, and clueless but was king to some classics as "All That Jazz", "Radio Free", "Feng Shui", "In The Closet",and Der Dieb, the best episode ever.
Then something happened, the voice artist behind Murphy, Harry Goz, passed away. It was a really sad fact, but the show proved in 2 episodes "Splitsville" and "Frozen Dinner" that they could do the show without a captain. But instead of staying like that, they went to a new guy, ex-football coach Tornado Shanks. If Shanks was all the creators could think of as a replacement, they could've just canceled the show. Seriously. The guy is unfunny and was severely in the way. As a result, the show became overly random and trying to outdo Aqua Teen Hunger Force as the weird violent show. It wasn't even close to Aqua Teen the way they were going and the show started to fall flat. For example, check out Let Em Eat Corn or better yet, watch Isla of Chupacabra and see if the show even tried to do good without Murphy.
It just didn't. It became a shell of it's former self. A desperate unfunny overly violent, trying too hard to be funny self. Murphy must be ROLLING IN HIS GRAVE.
Bottom line: Buy Seasons 1 and 2 of Sealab today and maybe rent Season 3 since it's the last one to have Murphy but contains Shanks episode. Sigh... R.I.P. Harry Goz.
8 out of 10 for Murphy and 1.5 out of 10 for Shanks.
Minoriteam (2005)
Thank you for putting down this show
This is terrible, tying Ghost In The Shell:2nd Gig and Tom Goes To The Mayor as the worst Williams Street show EVER. It's boring, terrible to look at, and it just DRAGS on and on and on forever while a funny show like Metalocalpyse feels like 5 minutes for a 11-minute show. It SHOULD BE 22 minutes but that's just another error for Williams Street.
What's even worse is that a lot of people are watching this. An Adult Swim bump covering the ratings for the first week of Peewee's Playhouse revealed that the show is second to only Family Guy on a Thursday. GASP. WTF??? This doesn't even signify the ending of bad Adult Swim shows. Coming up next is Assy McGee in November. McGee looks like it only has ONE joke to it and it's developed by Jon Benjamin, who gave voice to the best character, Coach McGuirk, and then there's Frisky Dingo, that's another story.
BOTTOM LINE: Minoriteam is a lazy, dull show that tries to be offensive but just winds up to be a chore to watch. You're better off watching what's after it, Moral Orel.
Corky Romano (2001)
"You Guys Want Some Cookies?"
I thought "Corky Romano" was funny. Chris Kattan did a great job as the title character, a veterinarian who's given a big job from his father/mob boss Pops (Peter Falk) to pose as an FBI agent to destroy the evidence of a crime he didn't commit.
With help from his dysfunctional brothers (Chris Penn & Peter Berg), Corky successfully enters the FBI. Quickly, he becomes the top agent of the bureau, thanks to his constant clumsiness. Soon, he saves the day and clears his father's name.
"Corky Romano" has good laughs with funny scenes (such as when Corky gets high on cocaine and then has to deliver a speech to children, or when Corky breaks in an underground casino club, enduring mace, a paint-mixer, and kicks in the face by a midget.)
However, this movie could have been a little more funnier if it had a better director and editor. First-time director Rob Pritts needs some more learning on setting up a gag, but he does fine enough (it's his first movie, anyway), but the editing by Alan Cody ("Inspector Gadget") could use some work.
Most scenes barely have a transition: it justs cuts to the next day or scene. The slapstick scenes are edited good enough to be funny, but they're not as hilarious as they are in the trailer and commercials.
This movie could also be more funnier if writers David Garrett and Jason Ward didn't nearly fill the film to the brim with profanity. For a PG-13 movie, there were way to much use of the "s" word.
Aside from these flaws, "Corky Romano" is still funny entertainment.
Black Sheep (1996)
"Black Sheep" has a wool coat of laughs
I am a fan of the movie "Tommy Boy", so I couldn't wait to see "Black Sheep", starring "SNL"-ers Chris Farley and David Spade.
This follow up to "Tommy Boy" is about Mike Donnelly (Farley), a rec center owner who is very eager to help his brother Al (Tim Matheson) with his governor campaign. The trouble is, every time Mike helps out, he spazzes out and causes chaos, thereby making Al look like a dunce in the race.
Al calls in an assistant, Steve Dodds (David Spade) to look over him while in the wilderness in Washington. Unfortunately, Mike escapes and gives Al more stress. But when he finds out that Al's opponent, former governor Tracy is cheating in the polls, it's up to Mike and Steve to save the day.
"Black Sheep" is not as funny as "Tommy Boy", but it has enough funny scenes. Fred Wolf, the punch-up writer of "T.B.", writes a script that plays to the duo's strengths. Chris Farley is the funniest person in the movie, doing some crazy stunts like falling down a steep hill or being dragged by a car. David Spade has some funny moments, too.
"Black Sheep" isn't great, but with many laughs, it's far from baaaaaaaaad.
