She's All That (1999)
It's a good comfort cheezy teen romance movie
You don't need to overanalyze this one. We need to put this into context: this was what was done best in terms of romantic comedy in the 90s. Yes it's cheezy, predictable and nothing groundbreaking but that's what was done best in terms of romantic comedy from the 90s. This was a movie aimed for young teenage girls. The characters, especially side characters are clichés, the dialogues aren't deep but the movie is still enjoyable. It does what you expect and perfectly fine. It's comfort cheezy romance. The thing that carries the movie is the simple plot and the charisma of both main characters. That's it. If you're young and have not lived in the 90s, I recommend watching it. You'll enjoy it and find a movie with a style that no longer exist today. I recommend it if you just want to watch a simple cheezy cute movie.
As for judging this movie in terms of political correctness of today's standards, I don't get how it offense anyone. This movie still has good morale. The girl who think she's ugly starts to like herself. The guy who thinks badly of a girl starts to really know and like her. The actual *-holes loses and have loses respect from the other kids.
Dota: Dragon's Blood (2021)
I thought it would be terrible
Honestly, making a story about DOTA sounded like an obvious cash grab and fan service. After one or two episodes I actually got hooked and grew interested by the characters, even those not relatable to DOTA. In fact, it was good enough so I wouldn't even care it was "DOTA". It's simply a good fantasy story! I found the art quite good too. There's also plenty of characters with each their motives, so it gave me a slight GoT vibe. Though, some scenes and plot device were hard to follow at times. Especially, the second half which seems to speed up the pace quite a bit.
In the end, watching this was quite enjoyable. The episodes aren't long so it doesn't drag on. I think it's worth to give it a try if you haven't watch it yet!
Hannibal (2013)
Starts off interesting, then becomes very twisted and repetitive and laughable
This show starts off interesting. An interesting murder gets solved, a second one in the next episode. But after a while the show gets so twisted it becomes hard to believe and even seems like a joke.
- The murders are all gruesome and weird as if the murderers want to make a piece of art with the crime scene and body. After the 5th episode, it's a bit funny that they stumble upon wicked and weird crime scene every single day, like regular murders don't happen anymore.
- The main character (Will) gets these super accurate visions of how the crime occurred just because he is extremely emphatic. At first, it's believable: he's just some kind of genius who can put himself in the mind of the killer and deduce from that. But sometimes, oh man, it's like the facts are pulled out of nowhere. I think Will is actually a spirit medium and goes in contact with the dead to know exactly what happened.
- Thinking about it, Will is the ONLY investigator the FBI has and his visions are their only resource to catch the killer. Where are the investigations, like finding clues, profiling suspects or interrogating witnesses? FBI doesn't need that. They just need Will's vision and they end up EASILY finding the bad guy. lol
- Will gets these INSANE hallucinations, blackouts and cannot distinguish between vision or reality -- HE GETS COMPLETELY NUTS-- yet his boss is like, whatever I'll watch over him, he'll be fine and lets him work as an investigator for the FBI. Anyone in their right mind would say "I think you need some vacation Will".
- Lecter is Will's psychiatrist, yet the more time passes the more Will goes insane. Nobody cares? Nobody asks Lecter "What the **** is going on with Will" and nobody questions Lecter's competence to treat Will's illness. He's a psychiatrist, he knows what he's doing, but the fact is that will is literally going insane in front of their eyes and nobody cares. lol
At first, this show appears to be clever and interesting, but when really thinking about it, it's actually pretty silly and dumb.
The Last Dance (2020)
Far from perfection as a documentary
I love MJ. He may be the best or at least popular Basketball player of his generation. I mean, I'm from Montreal Canada. We never had a Basketball team. I never watched a Basketball game, but nonetheless everybody knows who MJ is. If I ask any non-basketball fan around to name me basketball players, they'll all probably say MJ and no one else. The thing is, should we rate MJ or the documentary? I think we should review the latter.
I'll start by stating some good sides:
- I love that MJ is the focus of the show. I love MJ. Turns out he seems like a real modest guy today despite being very competitive and high profile when he was playing basketball.
- The series went generous with the basketball replays and I love it. I like sports, so I'd say I enjoy as much seeing a lot of replays of a championship series match by match even more than facts simply being told. Loved it.
Now onto my biggest gripe: The title. The "Last Dance" is about MJ's last season with the Bulls in 1998 before the team says goodbye to their venerable players and "reconstruct". However, this "Last Dance" is only really covered in the last episode. Every other episodes, the "Last Dance" is annoyingly teased out to the viewer for about 5 minutes before a decade length flashback.
Example: during the last season, Pippen is angry to the General Manager and wants a better contract, then Flashback to like 1989 and then the whole episode speaks about Pippen's rookie season and how he went into the NBA. At the last minutes of the episode, it jumps back to 1998 and then we get teased again about this infamous last season. "Oh, this last dance is coming, you're gonna see!". Then the next episode, it flashes back AGAIN and focuses on another player. This goes on for like 7 episodes.
It's not that the facts are uninteresting, but it's just that every time it did that, it felt to me like they were feeding me some "trivia" to fill episodes. I don't mind knowing a bit about every player but really spend whole episodes on them? So again, it is misleading. MJ's the real star, but let me tell you about every key players of the Bulls for like 5 episodes before we jump to the cool stuff.
In the end, I think this documentary was okay. I loved that they showed tons of replays. Some trivia were nice, but some other felt unnecessary. I wish it was shorter, and that it focused more on the last season than going with even more lengthly introductions and flashbacks.
Westworld (2016)
Not for me...
So I get told to watch this show, that it's very good and "you'll see".
After a few episodes, I still didn't get what the plot was about, or even liked any characters. I could get that they were trying to be philosophical and keep some kind of suspense or something.
But, when I got to a bit more than half of the show, it never got better. For every characters, I had about no real clue of what their purpose was. What do they want? What are they even doing? Why are they doing this? Not only that, they never surprised me with anything, and trust me, I know how to give credits even to shows I don't like. I didn't even know where this show was taking me. If there was even a destination. And then it finished without any of those things.
About the philosophical part... well, to me at least, it was BS. You hear them talk, and you never understand why they say this, do that, and what it could mean. It's like they try to be real serious, and voluntarily throws up random plot points and sentences to pretend to hold some very complicated meaning when, in reality, it just doesn't mean anything. It's easy pretending to be clever and intriguing, it's harder to do exactly that, but with a real meaning.
I saw a bunch of reviews saying it asks you the question of "What it is to be human". If you did ask yourself this question, give credit to yourself, not this show, because never once they dive into that territory. Not even in all the talk they did for a whole 10 episodes.
+1 for the music, it was very good. Yeah, the music.
