[Rec] (2007)
Do yourself a favour
and watch this.
I love horror films, unfortunately most these days are geared at pre pubescent kids hence the PG-13 rated "horrors". This is one of the best horror films I have seen and ranks up there with Haute Tension/Switchblade romance for turning your knuckles white.
Its a film in a documentary style with a reporter and her cameraman accompanying a fire crew for one evening and filming the event and what an event.
Its paced well, shot brilliantly and one of the few truly frightening horror films.
Don't wait for the American version to be released(Quarantine), get yourself off to see this first.
A real gem of a film and gets better/more frightening as it goes on. I wont spoil it by highlighting any of it, you will know which scenes I mean when you watch it ****chuckles to himself***
I Know Who Killed Me (2007)
Good grief
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
I have seen some pretty dire movies over the years, Nutbag and Sonatta spring to mind, however considering the actors in this it does scrape the bottom of the barrel.
Having read the reviews of this film I thought I would give it a watch to see just how bad it is. Its pretty bad.
The storyline stretches the boundaries of believability, the acting neither here no there, not terrible but not great by any stretch. Its just the storyline and script itself, with both of these gut wrenchingly awful.
It really is a strange mix and I found myself wincing listening to some of the dialogue and thinking just how ludicrous the whole premise is.
Characters come and go, say a few horribly scripted lines and then disappear, quite why they are in it or where they get to is anbody's guess.
What on earth happened to Julia Ormond, she was in a very good film called Legends of the fall and then she is reduced to appearing in guff like this? The whole film just feels like a straight to video Van damme or Seagal offering but with a better class of actors. Some actors never recover from dreadful films they are in and Lindsey Lohan may regret this nonsense in future. She needs to keep a tight reign on her agent if they recommend preposterous hokum like this as a starring vehicle.
Worth watching only if your curious about how bad it really is
Cloverfield (2008)
Cloverfield- A film that lives up to the hype
I cant remember the last time I saw a film that lived up to the hype.
Blair Witch- decent and different and a little unnerving, however after all the hype it didn't live up to it.
Cloverfield however does.
**Slight Spoilers*** Well if your looking for a film that spoonfeeds you all the answers then this isn't for you. It leaves more loose ends open and the possibility for a sequel/prequel as you don't know what the monster is, where it has come from or why.
However the movie is excellent with great characters, great realistic script and unbelievable special effects. No fat bloke wallowing round in a rubber suit or cringeworthy CGI. The hand-held camera decision was inspired, making the film more realistic and giving you a sense of panic and the sheer size of the beast.
Endings like this one usually infuriate me, but at the end of the film I was absolutely engrossed and it fitted perfectly.
Hats off to JJ Abrahams, he has made one of the best films I have seen in years and one that I feel will become a classic.
A film you will love or hate(if you cant handle the hand held cam).
Great, great film, thoroughly deserves its current score on IMDb.
Sonata (2004)
Painfully Dull
This film was like pulling teeth.Very little happened and each scene just dragged into another. Soap opera acting(apart from the lead girl)and I spent most of the 90 minutes fast forwarding through it. How this film has scored as high as 5/10 is beyond me. Occasionally you unearth a gem with these little known independent films, however this is not it. For supernatural thrillers etc your better off getting The Changeling or any other 70/80 horror.
Hire it at your own risk, but you have been warned. There is a lot better out there and films that are entertaining at least, this one couldn't even be classed as that I'm afraid.
Almost as appalling as Nutbag
Haute tension (2003)
Now that was unnerving
I've just watched Haute Tension, its 2:15am and I'm in the house on my tod feeling more than a little uneasy....
Haute Tension is everything you want in a horror film and have done for the last 20 years. I have been tired of being let down by 'horror' films over the years, each one released just eats away at your faith of ever seeing something worth watching. Well this film is worth watching. The murders are incredibly graphic, harrowing and quite how they got past the censors, i don't know. The story is about 2 girls who go to visit one of their families in the French outback and a psychotic killer who pays a visit to the remote farm house. From then on its an edge of your seat ride that will have you grimacing at the screen and picturing yourself in their position and what you would do.
I wont spoil it by going into too much detail, however if you do get chance- get this film. One of the best horror films I have ever seen, on a par if not better than The Burning, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street for sheer impact.
A disturbing and compelling film- Absolute class.
