Poor Things (2023)
Is this the best the Hollywood can offer?
Most of the characters in this movie are unlikable sociopaths. The biggest sociopath of them all is the wet dream of every misandrists, a doormat character of the groom to be, who can look at all of the carnage at the end with a smile on his face, while the elated music plays in the background, trying to trick you into thinking that this movie ends in a positive note about the people and society itself. The movie is described as "an incredible tale" and I do agree with that it is impossible to believe in it's narrative. So somehow they are able to do the brain transplants and then they have no problem into showing you scenes where that brain of a child goes to work in a brothel. Somehow with all of the scandals, Hollywood still doesn't have an issue with that. And the prostitution itself is presented as a liberating and a fantastic experience, there's no mention of you becoming dead inside or being riddled with diseases, we can only guess who can benefit from such a message. On top it all there a scene in the brothel where a father brings his two kids to watch and learn and the prostitute (which herself has a brain of a child inside her head) winks at them...yeah. Give this thing a bunch of awards and even more amazing reviews everyone!
Locke (2013)
When Universe wants to set you up for saying "I could never do it..." and you respond by sticking to your principles and giving It the middle finger
The movie held my attention and made me feel a range of emotions, so I just wanted to express my gratitude to everyone involved in its creation.
The protagonist is in quite a stressful situation but, unlike the garbage movie that is Uncut Gems, after watching this work of art I didn't feel like I just got home dead tired from a shift at my hectic workplace.
The soundtrack done by Dickon Hinchliffe fits into the story quite well and enriches it. I understand that the plot is rather outlandish but I was able to suspend my disbelief because the messages it carries are relatable and universally important. I highly recommend this movie.
Pad (2023)
Solid and refreshing
Acting was superb + I liked the soundtrack. My time flew by while watching this. Three things bothered me though.
1. The scenes where the two young men got murdered and the third one wounded were only shown as glimpses lasting less than second. In my opinion that's disrespectful, like they were only props.
2. The character of the brother was also quite passive, like it wasn't his freedom on the line too. Basically he was also a prop or the observer sitting in the crowd.
3. The repeating scenes of falling in every episode were a bit too on the nose.
Even with all of the above I still find this series rather well done and better than most of the other recent titles created in Serbia and Balkan in general.
Past Lives (2023)
Rather underwhelming
I don't know what movie did the critics and a lot of the other reviewers watched but it seems I watched a completely different one. I decided to go out and see this with my wife because of the stellar reviews and we both walked out quite disappointed. I couldn't stop myself from yawning throughout this movie and after it ended I paid attention to the comments of others from the crowd. Most of the comments could be summed up to:"It's not a bad movie, but it's not a great one either. It's lukewarm." Oh, and one girl was sniffing. I couldn't understand the reasoning of the two main characters. The male just can't get over his first falling in love and the female pretending she is not aware of it. Near the end she even tells her husband that he was right and that the guy was flying across the world just to see her, wow, you don't say Sherlock? A guy with a normal salary just deciding to take a long and expensive journey to drop for a few days and take a few pictures of the New York cityscape, riiight, that's completely normal and he is definitely not coming just to speak with you and get some sort of a closure or a new beginning.
Drive (2011)
Sad fantasy of a lonely, aimless driver
The only way this movie makes sense to me is if I view it as a fantasy that develops inside the head of the main character, the daydreamer. But then we come to the question of: Should this fantasy of a nobody, wishing for a family and wishing to be somebody, be transformed into an actual movie? The driver/dreamer creates this world where all the other characters get connected to him mostly by the string of coincidences. The characters, for example, his love interest, are one-dimensional, like one of the reviewers wrote- she feels more like a prop. The woman faithfully waits for her husband to come out of prison, but right after he's about to come back she decides to fool around with her new neighbour, our hero. Her husband owes protection money and instead of telling her to move somewhere far away she moves within the easy reach of the mob. The driver/dreamer takes uncomfortably long pauses before speaking, but that's not because he's intense or asocial, no, it's because he actually daydreams about the whole thing and formulates all the scenarios and dialogs in his head. That's why he has all the time in the world to kiss the girl in the crazy elevator scene while the wannabe assassin is right next to him. This is why his car is not damaged after he crashes it into another one during the chase. The only thing left to comment is the soundtrack. I noticed that some wrote that it's terrible and that's where I disagree with the bad reviews. I understand that some just might not like synthwave as a genre, but I think it fits perfectly into the driving thematic. Kavinsky - Nightcall opened up the movie nicely and with that added to the initial chase I really thought that I was in for a treat at the beginning of this terrible movie. That song is perfect for a slow night consisting of cruising the streets while foreshadowing something dark and foreboding waiting at the end of the road. Desire - Under your spell is also a nice song that was rightly used to portray the mood. But that was it for me, the rest of the tracks fell short, the movie really needed a couple of the tense ones. Hotline Miami, a game that came out only one year after this movie is a great example of what can be achieved with an awesome soundtrack that is mostly consisted of synthwave. To end this review I would just like to add that I feel cheated by the general folk and the critics combined and that doesn't happen a lot...I still didn't get over the John Wick fiasco, let alone the Top Gun Maverick garbage.
Brotherhood (2022)
Movie from 2022 with action scenes from the 80s
This movie is a nice example of how Hollywood terrible action movies influenced the cinematographies of the rest of the world. If your idea of an action movie is a protagonist saving his commander by jumping through the air and firing two guns at the two criminals rushing inside the room or a criminal giving a headshot to a policeman while shooting half-turned, with one hand from a vehicle speeding away then this movie is a solid ten for you. Oh and let's not forget the cliche of escaping by falling of a bridge while you're wounded and hitting the water like a plank...and that's not all, afterwards the antihero manages to catch up at a safe location the betrayer who was fleeing from the scene of conflict on a boat. Yeah, the script is just really bad.
Nope (2022)
No fresh air, only horse poop
You would think that the unlikable characters you get to hang out in this movie would mind living in a house drenched in blood that's been roasting under the hot desert Sun but- nope, they don't mind it at all.
One if the main characters tries to figure out a pattern in the behaviour of the strange predator, the same one that showed how it doesn't even follow a pattern related to the time of the day it attacks.
The scene with the chimp was the one scene in the movie that actually kept my attention. And out of the entire soundtrack the song performed by Exuma was the only piece that made me want to listen to it again.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Entertaining but shallow, the movie that wants you not to think and just watch
A classic brainless blockbuster for the summer.
You know that the enemy helicopter is going to blow up right before it opens fire, you also know that the enemy plane is going to blow up right as it fires a missile. You know that there is no way that the two downed pilots are able to meet up and then immediately waltz their way through the snow and forested area to the enemy base (amazing luck how the base got to be so close to their landings, I know). It's like they just teleported there, borrowed a plane, had a nice dogfight and got back to the plane carrier just in time for some celebratory beer and hugs followed by your applause.
John Wick (2014)
So, he got himself another puppy and the emptiness is gone now?
I like Keanu but the scrip for this movie is incredibly banal. The soundtrack is trashy. This is just another simplified action movie and there is nothing you haven't already seen. I expected more because of the solid ratings that this movie has and I was quite disappointed.
Get Out (2017)
A reflection on Obama's presidency
I have to admit that I expected so much more from Peele and this movie.
It's never a good thing when you react to the plot in the same way as those cops in a police station, unless you're going for a comedy movie, which could actually be the case here.
