Freud's Last Session (2023)
7 - Theology and Philosophy 101
Anyone interested in the works of Freud and Lewis, or theology, philosophy, and psychoanalysis will likely find this interesting. Having no grounding in the work of one of both could be a barrier. Freud's health issues and the evil of war add a floor for the good vs. Bad, lovintheological arguments Echoing others, not a stellar script, but solid performances like Hopkins make it quite watchable. Anna's character's and the war's beginning add some plot points, but work fine as a ways to break up the dialogue and aid the flow. While I do not profess to be an intellectual, it's nerdy enough to be thought provoking, which may be it's best feature.
The Unforgivable (2021)
Emotional Rollercoaster
Some convicts are without remorse, but some are such by reason of crimes of passion, as is her character. Sandra Bullock gives a masterful performance and her character's grief, angst, frustration, and longing is palpable. While at times uneven, still an thoroughly engaging movie well worth your time.
Eye in the Sky (2015)
So many hoops
Be assured this is a moving, fascinating, well-acted, thought-provoking drama. It's SO much more than a story about drone strikes. While there are some action scenes, it's not an action film. Beyond the military aspect, it's also about the collateral damage to those in and far beyond the target. The movie starts with a girl using a hula hoop which appears sporadically throughout the film. I might be misinterpreting its meaning, but think it - and by extension, the girl - is symbolic of the many, many, hoops the powers-that-be must jump through to "prosecute" a military mission fraught with myriad layers of political, military, legal, and social complications. Human life is on the line along with political and military careers, and the souls of those involved. Great film.
The Aliens (2017)
No sci, bit that's fine
A very nice indie film. Most of the acting is good, the story moves along at a nice, steady, pace, it has good production values, and the film some deserves respect. I gave it an 8 for what it is - a good indie film. If this were some big budget film, my rating would be very different.
Dune (2021)
Some underwhelming acting
First, Timothée Chalamet seemed wooden to me. He often seemed almost expressionless, and his voice was so often without any intonation. Very few times did I feel like he was displaying any real passion or energy. Jason Momoa showed energy, as did Oscar Issac. Rebecca Ferguson did a fine job, too. Maybe that's what Dennis Villeneuve wanted in his directing - understated resolve. I enjoyed it, but think it is drawn out for the sequels - which are bound to follow - especially considering where it ended. Don't think so?? How much more obvious than the very last moments of the film when Chani says, "This is just the beginning". It just seemed to plod along much too often. Maybe I'm too tied to the books to think this was a fair treatment, and was expecting too much.
