Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans (2021)
Ended with a twist but in the best way
The best stories value sacrifice, and trollhunters delivered. While I don't love all the spin-offs the trollhunter arc kept its strength and I think it will cement itself as one of the better animated series of the 2000's. Strong cast, good story telling, I think they should have stuck to playing to an older audience, rather then still appealing to the youngest generation. Great show. Think I'll have to go back and watch the original series all over again.
Bluey (2018)
Is there a more realistic show on parenting?
It was a casual listen, I happened to catch a two minute snippet of conversation of two Austrailian dogs, talking to their puppies. And I laughed out loud. I took two steps back and before I knew it, I'd watched four episodes. Granted each episode is only 7 minutes long, but it is more fun then I've had with any Disney cartoon show in ages. It took me back to the days of Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, Talespin, and suddenly I was anxious to watch this show (with my child of course... cough cough) again and again. Great writing, phenomenal voice acting. It ranks with some of my favorite shows I've seen. Excited for Season two to go on Disney+!
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Has there been a better video game to movie?
Stellar cast coupled with original script that kept
my normally stoic wife and I laughing. Excited for the sequel and thankful that even though Jim Carrey plays Jim Carrey he incorporated just enough difference to be a good antagonist for the film. Great movie.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Timeless.
I watch movies to glean life lessons. And while the ending of this movie puts the capstone on with Andy's lesson on Hope. There are so many other lessons that this movie displays; Perseverance, Optimism, the power of Humor. Shawshank Redemption proved itself to be the top rated movie in this database, I love it and too anyone who needs a movie for the ages, look no further then The Shawshank Redemption.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Took them a minute, but another great Disney movie.
Disney has had some hit and miss the last few years, wrinkle in time, Artemis Fowl, so to come into this movie thinking I'd get an underwhelming script and an overwhelming amount of Awkafina made me concerned. That was not the case. Raya delivered on the Disney promise of enough entertainment to keep an adult guessing, and just enough magic to hold the attention of my 3 year old. BEAUTIFUL movie. Fun writing, great voice work (maybe a little over play Wong) but overall definitely a great edition to the universe that is Disney. Go watch it, if you like dragons, go watch it sooner.
The Book of Life (2014)
Stolen... but Golden
From speculation at its release, this appears to be a changed story from Coco. But I'll forgive it. Great cast, good soundtrack and sound design, stunning scenes. Good show for any family, and good storytelling, definitely some cheesy elements(for the kids) but that wouldn't change that I love this everytime I watch it. Good show.
Fatboy Slim: Weapon of Choice (2001)
Dancing. Christopher. Walken.
I don't even care if some of those shots were a stunt double. I would sit and watch this whole thing anywhere anytime. Seriously. Only thing though... it really needs... more cowbell.
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
A 'Mobius Strip' of an ending.
Tom Holland leads the cast of A-list actors in this, the end of Phase 3. From a relatively slow 'Teenage romance' film beginning to it's 'edge of your seat' ending, Spider-man does not disappoint. Jake Gyllenhall plays a superb villain, one of my favorites I have seen in the MCU, right up there with the likes of Loki, Thanos and The Winter Soldier. My only complaint is the pacing in the beginning of the film. With the intro picked up a little through a lessening of dialogue as exposition, It would have been a 9.5 for certain. Come and watch this next installment and you won't be disappointed.
Cool Runnings (1993)
Made for a different Time
Cool Runnings came at a time that would allow a number of the racial slurs and stereotypes that are 'forbidden' in todays world of Cinema. While some of these are unrealistic, I felt it added to the charm and nuance that is Cool Runnings. A script that has a few good quotable lines, good overall focus on the primary plot, without a lot of character development. This story had to take you somewhere, and couldn't exist without the engine of its nature: which is that it is based off a true story. Without that basis, this movie would have been, in my opinion less successful and less meaningful. Its a 'straight to dvd from disney' kind of movie and could definitely fall into the category of cult classic.
Moana (2016)
Original Addition to The Disney Family
Moana is a very family friendly, female empowering story to add to the Disney Storybook. From its lovable characters to stunning landscapes and masterful music-making, Moana will be lovable and enjoyable fun for any family looking to be entertained. For those more cultured to film, they will be satisfied to find a well written story, complimented by great casting and Disneys signature princessesque atmosphere.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Unnecessary to the core of Toy Story
Toy Story 4 was an unnecessary and detrimental addition to what was successfully concluded in Toy Story 3. In Toy Story 3 we completed the Arc of the toys, that they were meant for children, that was their core. Now in Toy Story 4 we break the cycle by forcing the toys to have their own destiny, love interests, higher meaning... They are toys. While I appreciate the sentiment. It did not provide the depth of feeling and conclusion as the 3rd installment had. Please let this be the end. It shouldn't even have been made.
