Citizen Kane (1941)

brilliant
9 May 2017
I had only heard great things about this movie. Going into this I had very high expectations. To my dismay, I wasn't let down even in the slightest. This movie feels way more modern than a 1940's film. The movie is a classic story about the abuse of power and the tragedy of a man destined to do great and legendary things. I don't really have much to say apart from the fact that the acting was awesome and every scene was just as entertaining as the last. This is easily one of the best films I've ever seen, and I'm generally not a massive fan of older movies.

This movie is amazing. I life my life by the premise of this movie. The takeaway from this film is something every US citizen should watch especially in this century as the media consumes our culture. You might ask yourself what your watching for a good portion of the movie, but in a good way. It all pieces together in the end. I highly recommend watching this twice just because... well.. you'll understand at the end. It's one of those movies where you need to watch it twice to catch the subtleties.

great film

Arthur Penn directs this film very well with an awesome variety of shots. The first time Clyde shoots someone through the car window was incredible and well portrayed. The best part of the film for me was how the relationship of Bonnie and Clyde was depicted. The character development between the two is unparalleled. Clyde does not want to have sex. Bonnie wants to do something other than be on the run for their entire life. Clyde wants to look out for his family but at the same time they have some conflicting moments. At the end of the day, these two really love each other more than anything. They always come back to one another despite their conflicts. The movie is a true love story to say the least.

amazing and socially impacting

I had to watch To Kill A Mockingbird in High School. After re-watching this being older, I was able to appreciate this so much more. The strong anti-racism theme and the bond of friendship is something valuable. On top of that, the plot is sheer awesome to say the least. I do think the film should have ended after the courtroom trial. I can't really complain about too much though. The film is near flawless.

The Bad Seed (1956)

unrealistic
9 May 2017
I really did want to like this film. As a fan of the horror genre and "evil kid" movies, I heard from someone much older than me that this film was a must. I can see why this film may have been shocking and provocative at the time it was released. I was upset that none of the child's evil doings were shown on screen. In a creepy essence, that's the whole fun of horror movies. The character development for Rhonda just seemed abrupt and unrealistic. It was way too dramatic and it didn't seem authentic. I'm not sure if its her fault as an actress or just poor screenplay. Nevertheless, I don't actually regret watching the film. I like to watch everything under the horror genre at least once.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

awesome would be an understatement

Pulp Fiction is an amazing film. It is famous for being a film with twisted and out of order plot lines that eventually all pan out so you can make sense of it. It was a lot different than what I was expecting going into it. The movie is sheer entertainment to say the least. Samuel L. Jackson makes the film in my opinion. His acting was awesome. The film is funny and also houses the right dose of gore from a Tarantino film. A must see to say the least.

The Stranger (1946)

expected a little more
26 April 2017
The film has an interesting theme with dark, multi-dimensional characters which makes this an entertaining film. What could have been a well-crafted and intriguing suspense mystery however, is weakened by the overly simple plot and poor editing in places. Simple plots are normally something I support too. The beginning starts with a lot of promise and sort of gives out halfway through. The film almost seems like a failed imitation of an Alfred Hitchcock film (in terms of attempt at suspense)Despite this, the movie is still worth watching if you have some free time.

The Exorcist (1973)
10/10
great horror movie
26 April 2017
Being a horror movie junkie myself, I had only heard great things about The Exorcist going into it. The film is excellently produced, especially for its time. The film has ages well especially in comparison to other horror films. The possession scenes are also ahead of its time. The film doesn't have many jump scares that modern horrors have, so if you're looking for that, don't watch it. However, if you're looking for a classic possession plot and a genuinely creepy story then it's the perfect film. Again, don't expect to be overly scared watching this film, it's more about the awesome plot.

way too long, but politically important at the time
31 March 2017
I recognize the significance this film has, but the story line drags which intervenes heavily with my opinion on the movie. The cast chemistry didn't seem to be all there. A lot of scenes felt really forced, and normally I don't have a knack for noticing that sort of thing. It seems as though they went out of their way to get the point across, which made the narration rather static. I can appreciate the important and impact the film had, however, it didn't age so well.

fascinating from a historical standpoint
24 February 2017
This was a fascinating movie. It doesn't really come as a surprise to me since John Ford directed it. The story follows Abe Lincoln (the 16th president of the United States) as he finds his way into a the career- path of a lawyer. He discovers throughout the movie that law boils down to morality and the different between right and wrong. I told aspects of Lincolns life that I knew nothing about. The first half of the movie was very slow as it staged the plot, which is why I'm giving it a 7/10. The second half courtroom scenes redeemed itself. Henry Fonda played the role well, and even semi-looked like Abe. Although fictional, it gave good insight as to how the story all played out in real life. I would recommend this film every day of the week to a history geek like myself.

Pretty funny
15 February 2017
As someone who isn't a fan of the old screwball comedies, the film is actually pretty funny. I don't normally find the humor in screwball comedy, but His Girl Friday did it right. The witty banter conversations are unrealistic, but can't be taken too seriously considering the genre. It was remarkable how quickly they were speaking throughout the movie. It was as if the script was twice as long as anticipated and they had to babble through to finish it all. The speed adds comedic value, though. A lot of times throughout the film people were talking over each other to create a more realistic context of conversation when arguing or excited about something. I thought this was rather advanced dialogue for a 1940 film. I would definitely recommend this film.

Dracula (1931)

Horror classic
15 February 2017
As a massive fan of horror films myself, I was intrigued to watch this as it was practically the inception of monster horror films. It is without a doubt that this film is very well made. The sets themselves are incredibly advanced for its time. Lugosi plays the role very well as the villain vamp. The acting is comical at times, and the times haven't been kind to the film in terms of effects. There's no blood/biting/death on screen. The film seemed rather low-budget. It gets a little slow around the middle of the film. The above needs to be taken with a grain of salt considering the date it was made. All that being said, every true fan of the horror genre should watch this movie.

Scarface (1932)
better than the remake
30 January 2017
This Gangster film based out of the crime underworld in Chicago is sick. I was never a huge fan of the remake, but after seeing this I gained a whole new respect for the Scarface story line. I think Tony Camonte is better portrayed than the 1983 Tony Montana. The black and white cinematography and the concise story line makes it more appealing somehow. The story line has some accurate or near accurate real-life events based on the story of Al Capone. I was surprised to see the amount of violence in this film. It almost seemed like there was more in this version than the remake. That definitely pushed the social acceptance boundaries for the 1930's which is fascinating about the film.

Wings (1927)

historically accurate dogfights
22 January 2017
The film is set during WW1 and follows around the early inception of the US Air Force. The technology at the time to film a movie while flying is what fascinates me about this film. The film follows around Jack and David on their endeavor as pilots. At the time, flying was a dangerous yet adventurous act, let alone to film a movie while doing so. The scenes with the dogfights were my favorite parts of the movie and were probably some of the best re-enacted war scenes even comparable to today's films. As a history guru myself, I was surprised to see how accurate they were. The story line is portrayed intensely for a silent film. Wings is my favorite silent film so far.
