Les mains noires (2010)
One of the best docu-dramas around!
Saw the film at the World Film Festival in Montreal. It's about slavery in Canada but told through the story of Angelique. She was a slave who really didn't accept her condition. It's almost like she was born ahead of her time. The historians telling her story are very good. You can tell that they really know the subject. The mix of documentary and reenactments by top actors is difficult because you have to make sure that it doesn't feel contrived. The director did a wonderful job and the mix feels organic. The story of Angelique is really unbelievable and again, the style of the film is very interesting. It feels like you're watching a thriller. Two thumbs up!
Quarantine (2008)
Watch the original titled "REC". It is superior in every way!!!!
Don't waste your time with this movie. You'd be better off watching the original which this one is a remake of, titled "REC". First, I'd like to say that I enjoy watching the originals then the remakes so I can compare the two. Often, the remakes are totally different and can range from not that bad to totally great. A good example is "The Departed"(excellent) which is a remake of "Infernal Affairs"(also excellent). So again, I made it a point to watch "REC" before "Quarantine". Well, let me tell you that there is no comparison. Where "REC" was full of suspense with superb acting, "Quarantine" is a total mess. The lighting is awful, the acting is average... at best. But the writing is what really got to me. Why would they change anything from the original, ESPECIALLY THE ENDING? "REC" explanation was totally unexpected (you REALLY don't see it coming) and the ending makes you ask for more (I guess the writers/director heard the fans because REC 2 came out. Can't wait to see it). Who ever wrote "Quarantine" just dumb the plot down. They thought that adding gore and having people scream none stop is somehow "suspense". "REC" is superior in the sense that, yes there is some blood (not gore), but the writers/director clearly went for building an atmosphere that goes from light and breezy to total chaos. Everything moves along at a very quick pace. After just 15 minutes, the action begins. With "Quarantine", it takes at least 35 minutes of nonsense (which felt like 2 hours, that's how bored I was) before the firefighters are finally dispatched to the building, followed by the reporter and her cameraman. Also in "REC", they manage to have character development which really impressed me. In "Quarantaine", everyone is pretty much interchangeable. And finally, you know when sometimes you watch a movie and you start talking to the screen and say things like "why don't they do this?". Well with "REC", I found myself doing that and seconds later, one of the characters says what I just said or does what I said they should do. I tell you, run and watch "REC", you will not regret it!
