Lightyear (2022)
A fine balance
This movie is a fine balance between being watchable and unwatchable. There is enough to keep you watching to find out what happens next, but enough that is either formulaic or straight out of the hero's journey template that you wonder why you are bothering. It tries to cram too many ideas in. If the writers had focused on less ideas but developed them more then the movie could have had more substance. Hopefully if they do a Woody version they won't mess it up as much. Also, I watched this with my 7 y/o and he didn't understand most of the plot, and it didn't make enough sense to me to try to explain to him. Oh well.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Epic. Amazing. Profound. Hilarious.
Like doing drugs without the hangover. If you've ever wondered what doing psychedelics is like, watch this. These writers deserve an Oscar. They probably have twelve in another universe.
David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (2020)
Beautiful, heart wrenching, timely, profound.
The fact that this documentary has gotten so many positive reviews highlights the shift that is already underway in human awareness about our place on this planet and the changes we must make if we are to survive.
I am in my late thirties and David Attenborough has always been the number one nature guy on TV for as long as I can remember. His voice is, after all these years, EXACTLY the same!!! Best. Voice. Ever.
Stunning shots in this doco of rainforests, oceans, wildlife, etc from the vast library of David's work. He's chosen some thoughtful metaphors to convey the message and does so in an easy to understand way.
I know a lot of people found this documentary depressing and I did cry in one part. But on the whole, I think this documentary is a profound piece of media. The world is finally ready to hear this message. And the fact David has brought his life's work together into such a powerful message is both heart wrenching and beautiful. Thank you, sir David!
I Hate Suzie (2020)
Quirky, Dark and Dry.
Quirky dark comedy with dry humour. Hilarious characters that are super fun to watch and acted with flair. Like Black Books meets a bleak Bridget Jones. Loved it!
Little Birds (2020)
Beautiful and complex
Like watching a cross between a F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hunter S.T. novel come to life. Beautiful scenes and so much subtext. Complex layers in the story and great acting. The themes of romance, gender inequality, and family roles are framed against the backdrop of society and corrupt politics. If you like art house movies and great literature then you'll love this.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Fun, flawed, superheroes.
Intriguing story with depth, suspense, twists, and complex characters. Heavily stylised in a way that is visually compelling and a whole lotta fun. Soundtrack is next level. Watch it... you won't be disappointed!
Salvation (2017)
Typical Humans
There's an asteroid coming to destroy the planet and instead of coming together to create a plan to avert this, all everyone can do is fight amongst themselves about who is in charge. A fun and alarmingly resonant series.
Westworld (2016)
So much potential, yet so boring.
Amazing high concept idea that is timely and relevant. But such boring characters.
