Zeroville (2019)
I believe it's a very good movie.
First off, kudos to Franco for taking creative risks films rarely take in 2019. The film is full of hauntingly beautiful references to Hollywood's past, and the actors are so committed to their respective roles that they pull it off. Walk in with an open mind; if you are a fan of David Lynch and surrealist filmmaking then you won't be disappointed.
3 from Hell (2019)
Rob Zombie revels in his own kind of cinematic universe... and it's glorious.
You have all the pieces of a great Rob Zombie picture here: hilarious comic book dialogue, gruesome violence, and charismatic anti-heroes. The Western elements are omnipresent in this one, building upon the style of The Devil's Rejects. AWESOME flick. Would highly recommend.
Luce (2019)
Appearances can be deceiving....
The film never really gives us the answers we crave, but rather serves up thought-provoking questions about perspective and the lies we tell ourselves and others in order to make sense of our circumstances. Walk in with an open mind, and prepare to expand your point of view. Kelvin Harrison Jr. KILLS it as well.
Euphoria (2019)
Another Win for HBO
After watching the pilot, I can already tell this show's going to be something special. It's gorgeously shot, well-acted, and above all else- painfully honest. One of the best pilots I've seen in recent memory.
Hellboy (2019)
Gory, Glorious, and Fun as Hell
Walking into the new Hellboy reboot, I knew exactly what I wanted, and Neil Marshall delivered just that. Is it different than the del Toro films which are excellent in their own right? Yes, but the film stays faithful to the comics and basks in its own gleeful take on what it means to be human, and more importantly- an outsider. Hellboy reads like a fun, rowdy, anti-hero movie with tons of gore and dark humor. David Harbour and Milla Jovovich bring especially memorable performances. If you know what you're in for, and love movies that put a unique spin on overstuffed genres, you won't regret seeing this!!!
Serenity (2019)
A Beautiful, Mystifying Film
Let me premise this by saying I see numerous films every week, and rarely am I ever inclined to write a review. However, I feel I must speak my mind on this film, especially due to the harsh ratings and poor box office performance (thus far).
Serenity left me with a visceral emotional reaction that I have yet to quite understand. Never before has a movie taken me on such an emotional roller coaster. The film had me laughing toward the beginning, and crying by the end.
I wish I could explain why the film meant so much to me. From an objective perspective, I'm sure most critics and movie goers will find various ways to pick it apart. But it doesn't matter. All I ask is that if you are reading this, go see the film for yourself. Maybe you'll love it. Maybe you'll hate it. All I can say is that Serenity shook my world and left me utterly speechless. Thank you for this wonderful gift Mr. Knight. I can not wait for the return of Peaky Blinders.
Mother! (2017)
Darren Aronofsky's "Mother!" is 2017's best picture.
In an age frequently dominated by generic and banal movies, it is refreshing to see that such good filmmaking still exists. Darren Aronofsky's "Mother!" is not only the best film of the year, but it is also a timeless piece of art that will still be just as relevant for generations to come. "Mother!" is, at its core, a film about the endless generosity of nature taken advantage of by mankind. This film is packed with so much symbolism and so many layers of meaning that one couldn't possible begin to dissect it all in one viewing. The unorthodox style and brutal honesty of the film may turn some viewers off, but this is a very important narrative that we must not shy away from. Aronofsky is well aware of the fact that history repeats itself, and unless humans decide to take responsibility for our actions and stop the endless assault on Mother Nature, we might wake up one day to find that she has no more love to give. If you want to find out more and witness the best performance of Jennifer Lawrence's career, GO SEE THIS FILM!
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
A beautifully-crafted Gothic thriller by visionary filmmaker Gore Verbinski
Verbinski's A Cure For Wellness is visually stunning and depicts Gothic horror at it's finest. 1) The cinematography is absolutely breathtaking 2) Wonderful and believable performances by DeHaan and Goth 3) Well-crafted narrative with surprising twists and turns 4) Outstanding production design 5) Full of classic Gothic/horror elements that help develop the film's eerie vibe 6) Overall a quintessential example of what visual-storytelling should look like
