The Boys (2019)
Please don't read this review
Watch it yourself and make up your own mind! You can't please everyone. Some episodes call for a strong constitution, and there are plenty of WTF moments. Watching this I kept thinking this is what 2019 Brightburn could have arguably should have been. It's definitely not family friendly. But if want pure escapism then buckle up, because you're definitely NOT in Kansas anymore! I actually think this a 7. But I wanted to draw your attention to the point I was trying to make. Reviews are just one persons opinion and should not be read as fact. Just like a restaurant review - everyone's tastes are different.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
The bar was set way too high!
Yes it's a good movie, if you're a marvel fan boy like me. The acting was good. In particular Doc Ock and Green Goblin. However I wasn't blown away by the storytelling. It's worth a rewatch for nostalgic reasons, but it's not in the same league some of the standalone MCU movies and not even Tom Holland's best performance as the masked vigilante.
Hawkeye (2021)
Solid 7/10
This series is a grrrrreat arc for Hawkeye's character who has great chemistry with Kate. Throw in some scene sealing performances by Jack, Yelena & Maya's characters - making
this a very entertaining and enjoyable watch. I love plot twists and linking Yelena's story from Valentina Allegra de Fontaine to Wilson Fisk is a masterpiece of storytelling.
No Time to Die (2021)
This is not a Bond film. Meh. Pish.
Where do I start? As a big fan of the franchise I think the film was way too long, with massive narrative liberties. The pc brigade were also clearly making decisions here. I kept nodding off because the pacing was so slow, and the villain was just meh! I know QOS was naff but I didn't leave the cinema as disappointed as I did with this pish. For me Casino Royale & Skyfall will always be DC's finest outings. This is not a Bond film - it's a love story with DC trying to redefine the character. In no rush to see it again, but should've waited for the post credit scene.
Free Guy (2021)
Crazy 'off the chain' wackadoo!!!
Honestly, it will surprise you. Fantastic on so many levels.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
Totally badass smackdowns, but it's not a flawless victory!
This reboot kicks off with a great prologue with ass-kicking MK one-on-one combat between Joe Taslim & Hiroyuki Sanada. After this strong first act, it becomes less of a focus, much to the detriment of the movie. Overall, so much of this movie feels like 'set-ups' that I'm left wishing someone would 'finish it'. Kudos to Josh Lawson and the fight choreographers. But overall, I felt MK struggled to construct a coherent plot around too many characters.
The Fighting Temptations (2003)
It's a hit in our household :-)
A firm family favourite. What's not to like? It'a LOL hoot with some amazing vocalists and great casting. Lighten up people :-)
WandaVision (2021)
Well, the first 17 minutes of WandaVision were boring AF!
If you're an MCU fan then congrats you got an MCU show. I'm curious just how much of the parodying that #WandaVision does of old sitcoms is going to go over peoples heads. The first 17 minutes of WandaVision were boring AF, and it doesn't even draw you in.
Hard Kill (2020)
This movie sucks
In the history of sucking, this movie takes the crown. No plot, no story, lazy writing, poor casting. It's one to forget
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Over-hyped, underwhelmed
Ba humbug. After much hype an anticipation, I was super excited to watch this Christmas sequel to the 2017 box office smash. But ho, ho, oh dear, what a disappointment on so many levels.
The New Mutants (2020)
Underwhelmed
This could have been great, but missed the mark on so many levels. Lazy writing, poor direction and poor casting lead to a poor performance from Maisie Williams & Anya Josephine Marie Taylor-Joy.
The Mandalorian (2019)
8.5/10
Well, I don't understand some of the comments. If your a Star Wars fan boy and you love spaghetti westerns, this is for you. Mondo is is the 'man with no name'
A Quiet Place (2018)
That was unexpected
Considering the plot, the actors did a great job with no speaking parts (especially the children). The film gets straight into it without a back story - which is a bit lazy, but the film still moves on a good pace.
Underwater (2020)
Meh
It's like watching 'Alien' without the suspense. It was predictable, unimaginative, but beautifully shot though. Backstory was poor and the characters were under developed. Don't get me started in the aliens (a sorry mishmash of borrowed ideas from great movies before it).
Upload (2020)
Meh!
It was okay; a bit of a slow burner. Main characters are good, but the main storyline is weak.
Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
'Dollar-mite is my name'
It's a very funny biopic, that plays to Eddies strengths. Having seen it, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing the part of Dolemite.
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Meh! Don't believe the hype!
Underwhelmed - it's just another popcorn movie trying to punch way above it's own huge budget. Not nearly as enjoyable as Holland's breakout movie 'homecoming'.
The Matrix (1999)
i know kung-fu
This movie is the cinema game changer (it had everything). It was so good the sequels couldn't live up to it
Rim of the World (2019)
lazy writing, bad characterisation and no plot
DOH! I cannot day anything more than what's been said already. Really wanted to like this film but it was so lame I had to spare someone else the pain of watching this drivel. Shame on you Netflix for adding this to my recommend list.
Ballers (2015)
It's good light entertainment
The storylines and characters are good. When you have an out of the box successful season one it's a tough act to follow but they kept it flowing. you don't have to be a fan of football to enjoy watching this.
Shazam! (2019)
Better than your average popcorn fest (but only just)
Well I went to watch this movie without the baggage of expectation or character research. I wasn't disappointed. it's edgier than your average teen flick and does poke fun at superhero stereotypes. There are some laugh out loud moments and the characters are well defined opening the door to a potential sequel/ team-up. To be fair to this film, it's difficult to come up with something original when we are suffering from a Marvel/ DC superhero hangover. however this family friendly film ticks a lot of the right boxes.
Colony (2016)
Is there life after Colony Season 3?
I will miss the Bowman family's adventures and close encounters with Snyder! Hopefully Netflix or Amazon Prime will pick up Colony Season 4
Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Ready player 99? #alita rox!
Good story telling, backed up by great casting and some amazing set pieces. The pacing was good and it ends with cliffhanger! What more could this movie goer want? Well dissappointed there weren't any post credit scenes but I can't wait to see where Alita's journey takes her!
