Taboo (2017)
ΓWWWE-SSSSOMMMMME!!!!!
I hope there is no limits on the quantity of exclamation marks I am allowed to use, because this show is !!!!!!!
I have been reading about this show for just over a year now, and I recall seeing the promos for the series premiere on FX. I hadn't been able to catch on the t.v.; and now that we cancelled our cable service, I had been fretting about not being able to see this show!
Lucky me, I happened across this title while browsing one of our streamers (no, not the ones you scotch tape to a doorway for parties). Needless to say, I am not disappointed!!
Tom Hardy has quickly become my new favorite actor! Anytime I've read that a character is going to be cast for such-and-such movie, my votes are always Hardy..need a new Batman? Tom Hardy! Need a new Wolverine? Tom Hardy!! Looking to do a different take on Cruella De Ville? Tom frickin' Hardy!!! (but please don't do that, the dude loves dogs).
I really really loved him as Mad Max...check that: everything he's in is effing fantastic!!!!! And he was stupendous in Venom (and that is not a word I use often!!!).
The rest of this cast is fabulous as well, that shouldn't have to be said (so glad to see Michael Kelly!). And Mr. Pryce!!!! πππ
I cannot wait for season two!!!!!!! I am hoping we won't be waiting until summer or fall of 2019..please be soon!!!!!!! (I mentioned I'd use a load of those..you were warned).
Apostle (2018)
Finally, something that appeals to my inner heathen.
All that marching up the aisle for what I could only conclude was a little cicle of notebook paper and a chance to look at a cup of grape juice...communions...bible classes...those damned weekly 'memory verses' that I usually forgot to memorize (yeah, couldn't stand that π©..). All that tuition my parents wasted. All for naught.
No wonder my mother didn't want to talk to me before she died; I've always been a heathen non-believer, and always will be π. Try cramming that π© down my throat and I'll become an obstinate 4 year old, sitting at the dinner table until 3 in the morning, with the plate still occupied by brussel sprouts π(yeah, like that guy).
No one could possibly think that religion is damaging, I used to believe. I'll never know other people could see religion for the crap it does to people. I'll never meet, speak, find..others who are left damaged, laden with an entire full cargo ship's worth of guilt shame and isolation.
This movie left me feeling like, "hell yes, there ARE more like myself" and it seems to be gaining momentum, this steering away from these dark ages beliefs (now with less torture!!).
Okay, enough unloading off my heavily laden heart..I gotta say this π© was freaky. It seems to me that Dan Stevens like a good workout DURING the filming of things. Unholy crap, what're they gonna do to him on next season of Legion; he seems to do much panting I am starting to suspect he might have asthma (im JK, lighten up ppl).
And I hate to admit this, but that scene where the kid's head gets 'aerated'...I have watched a lot of horror, movies, tv, Sandler's first movie (go ahead, see if you can find it...but I wouldn't look too hard, and I love his movies). I actually had to dash out of the room. Peeking at the screen from around a corner. Through my fingers. And I NEVER watch horror stuff THRU MY FINGERS (i consider it to be the cowardly way to watch). And only when there was no screaming.
Damn good stuff, freaking me out like that.
I'll be cuddling ALL my plushies tonight. Thanks.
BTW, this might contain spoilers...sorta. So I am marking it YES, but I'm not certain if people will understand what i meant by someones head being aerated. Unless theyve watched it, in which case its not a spoiler. And why would people read a review of something theyve not watched yet?
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Well, I loved..so bite it 'Negative Normans' and 'Pissy Pattys'...
Okay, I've counted up all the ten star reviews, there's probably more..but 25 plus mine, =26 people giving this title ten stars...that comes to 260 stars. How awesome is that?
All those negative people probably watched this series (if they watched at all π€) looking for things to call an issue. Or they don't like scary stuff to begin with. Or just not commiting all their attention to it.
This series is so awesome! And I didn't realize that Mike Flanagan directed all these other movies that I've enjoyed over the last few years...Oculus, Gerald's Game (holy π©, the movie inspired the book? or is it the other way around?), Hush (hell yeah, that π© is INtense).
Add to that, everything else, and wow, how can people give this one star? Did you nod out and just catch the end of the second episode? Or did it cut into prayer group night? The cast was awesome (who doesn't love seeing that young up & comer from Taps?), the set design was great, great writing, great...no, SUPERB everything. And the source ain't too bad, either.
Even my SO got wrapped up in it, and he doesn't care for scary stuff (sensitive sleeper). I think I bounced on the sofa saying "DO IT AGAIN, DOIT...AAAGAAAAIN!!!!".
I've got one thing to add: I cannot WAIT for Dr. Sleep. I know it'll be awesome.
I've heard the authors of that book aren't too shabby either π.
Thank you Netflix, and Mike Flanagan and everyone involved with putting this series out into the world.
Into the Dark: The Body (2018)
So Far, So Good
Well, I didn't find out about this series until seeing a promo for it at the movie theater (SO & I went to see 'Venom', which was awesome, in my opinion).
I thought that it looked like a fair series, and we are w/o cable now, so I have been looking desperately for scary π© to watch- for me, Halloween comes 365 days a year- and it makes me happy on the inside when something new shows up on the streamers (we have Hulu and Netflix, yea Team Us!!). This time of year there always seems to be an ample supply of 'scary' movies and tv shows...and the results differ from one thing to the next. So really the greatest fear I have is "How bad is this ______ going to be?".
Boy, I did not end up disappointed with this first installment! Good cast (Hell yeah, Ash's coworker is in this!), and entertaining throughout...all the way to the end. I always appreciate the fact that the antagonist gets to suffer the consequences at the end, and from a character that nobody realizes is still in the game.
Sorry to be lacking in the 'sophisticated' and 'high brow' tastes of some of my fellow reviewers...some of their points are understandable, but it would be hella cool if people would just relax, sit back, kick off the work boots, have snacks and bevvies handy, and just enjoy the entertainment (at least on the first viewing; you wanna do the Siskel & Ebert thing ((pour some out for those dudes...may they both R.I.P.)), do it on the second time watching it). Looking for eff-ups just spoils the whole reason the writers, actors, directors, etc. created it for. Enjoyment. Entertainment. To allow people a brief escape from the 'Real World' (because it sucks, long and hard these days, doesn't it?).
You want deep, thought provoking stuff? Watch a documentary..ther's thousands of them out there..some might even change your life ("Chasing Coral" was mind blowing..and it had a real affect on us).
You're looking for historical accuracy? Watch a Ken Burns series..those will change how you view world history. ("The Civil War" really is an epic series..starting "The Prohibition" next).
Just saying, relax, enjoy the show/movie, and don't toss spoilers around like cheap candy..they may not have razor blades in them, but they can cut the fun out.
Stuart: A Life Backwards (2007)
Just more proof of how awesome Tom Hardy is!
I am always blown away by how Tom Hardy uses his voice & body to become a character, fictional or non-fictional. I can't wait to see another film with him in it...I've seen 'Mad Max:Fury Road', 'Dark Knight Rises', 'Inception' and 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy', twice apiece. 'Legend' I have seen three times. He is an actor you just can't stop watching.
I am very puzzled in the above list of plot keywords: pubic hair? male frontal nudity? Why are those the terms listed, instead of :alcoholism, addiction, friendship, childhood trauma?
I do agree with the person who stated this a film most people should see. Addiction has a vice-like grip on large numbers of the globe at this time. This film could open eyes to how to navigate the social issue of addiction.
