School of Life (2005)
Science teacher trying to live up to his dad's reputation takes on cool new teacher for teacher of the year award.
I've liked Ryan Reynold's since 'Two Guy's and a Girl' so when I was flicking through the TV guide I knew I just had to see this film. I expected it to be good- Reynold's is a fantastic comic actor and after seeing the Amityville Horror I knew he could do serious roles too. But this film gave me a lot more than I bargained for. From the outside it looks like your typical high school based comedy but it's so much more than that- I don't want to give anything away but it isn't all laughs. So any of you who haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for? Go you big loons and watch it now!!! Now to find a school that has a teacher as cool and, erm, 'interesting'... oh alright 'fit' (for any of you who don't get our British slang that means gorgeous). More Ryan Reynolds films please!!!
It Had to Be You (2000)
Two people meet one weekend and begin to fall in love. Just one problem... THEY'RE BOTH GETTING MARRIED!
I just want to make one thing clear- I love Michael Vartan! But this film really lets him down. His acting is still superb, he's still as charming as ever, and he still looks great. But the film itself is a load of rubbish! Natasha Henstridge, I'm sorry to say it, comes over bit manly... you're constantly waiting for her to run off with her best friend, who's own sub-storyline is a little weird. Myself and my family (who sat down and watched the film with me) were also put off by the soundtrack to the film; at times the music just didn't fit with what was going on in the scenes. However, even this was not the worst aspect of what I found to be a very disappointing film. I could forgive the leading lady's butch-ness, I could forgive the freakish characters that were thrown in to the mix, and I could forgive the poor choice of musical accompaniment, but whose choice was it to cut out the whole middle section of the film and skip straight to the end??? The ending was obviously planned from the beginning but how it gets there is left untold. If you're a Michael Vartan fan skip this film: buy yourself a poster instead.
Shadows of Desire (1994)
Woman meets the man of her dreams... and then another who happens to be his brother.
Although not particularly original, I found this film enjoyable for a made-for-TV movie. Sure it's not one that you'd rush out to the cinema to watch but it's still good if you want to sit in front of the telly with your feet up and a good cup of tea. I found myself continuously screaming at the telly when I was watching this; why can't people just take the easy option for a change and choose the best man? Then again that wouldn't make much of a film and part of what makes it so interesting is seeing the struggle that the leading lady goes through in deciding who to pick. Look out for the twist towards the end too... it was the best part of the whole film!
Legally Blonde (2001)
Bimbo grows a brain and finds herself in the process.
On the surface, Elle Woods seems to be your stereotypical blonde air-head. She loves pink, carries her little dog around with her and she has, like, big boobs. But when things go wrong with her boyfriend Warner she chases him all the way to Harvard Law School to win him back. This film is packed full of laughs and Elle is so lovable you can easily get past the fact that she isn't always the sharpest tool in the box. But be warned! You have to watch it past the first couple of scenes because the voice takes a bit of getting used to and your first instinct is to hate Elle's character and switch it off. However, if you don't take it too seriously and take all of the legal scenes with a pinch of salt, it's a great film. Just give it a try- what have you got to lose?
Dirty Dancing (1987)
If you love dancing, music, romances or drama you'll love this film.
I don't know any woman who doesn't like this film. When Baby goes on holiday with her family for the summer she thinks that she's going to have another boring summer with more of the same. Instead she meets Jonny and he teaches her how to live a bit more. Patrick Swayze is fantastic in this...the dancing, the acting and even the singing (they play one of his songs 'She's like the wind' in the later scenes). Even those of us younger ladies begin to find him strangely attractive. The music gets you up and dancing along every time and the cringe-worthy moments early on in the film will have you in stitches. A must-see for all- especially if you love a good chick-flick!
Batman Begins (2005)
The best ever Batman film, possibly even best superhero film ever!
All of you die hard Batman fans were probably getting just as sick as I was with the pathetic attempts the movie industry had already made at bringing this caped crusader to the big screen (I don't even want to remember George "I have the same expression on my face for all of my roles" Clooney's attempt!) Hello people! Batman is supposed to be dark! He has depth! So thank God for Christian Bale who finally brought a bit of this to the character and made it one of the most enjoyable flicks around. Sure we all love the Spiderman and X-Men films but believe me this is well on par! Serious but funny in all of the right places, with some great one-liners from Michael Cane. The film explains a lot about why Batman is so much darker than your average super, so you come away feeling like you haven't sat and watched a film with people doing pointless things for no reason but to get an award for special effects- which by the way are also very good!
