Sh'tika (2012)
Just Awesome!
This film was awesome! Ben Hicks and Danny Loughmiller have done it again. I was on the edge of my seat and the music and images hit just right so that I wasn't the only one jumping out of my seat. Although a short, it has potential to make an awesome feature length film that could provide more back story; although, the overall affect was captured beautifully without a single line of dialogue.
Sh'tika (Hebrew for silence) provided mystery, intrigue, suspense and scares without gore, foul language or other such nonsense added to films today for shock value. This film is able to stand on its merit alone to provide entertainment and I proudly give it 10 out of 10 stars!
In Convenience (2008)
A great flick!
As a self-proclaimed film buff and critic, I have seen quite a number of films. I love movies. As far as independent films go, this was excellent. In comparison to major motion pictures, this actually has a story which puts it way above the current trend! As far as movies made by Mormon directors, this is way at the top. Watch it! I bought this movie before I saw it, as I know the director/writer. Don't get me wrong, there was some really bad acting by some of the characters and it got a little slammed together at the end, but the story was great; the idea was played out well; and the the feel of the film was impressive.
The Trumpeter (2004)
The best of "Mormon Cinema"
From a production values view, this is by far the best of the "Mormon Cinema". The acting, writing, camera work and even the soundtrack are all first rate.
The story, superbly acted by an ensemble cast, is familiar. Essentially, a new missionary makes a connection with an elderly gentleman in a way a more cynical veteran missionary failsthrough music. After the expected problems, the two missionaries learn and benefit from the spirit and enthusiasm and the elderly man has a new found hope. The story works because the experience is universal enough that people can relatewe learn from each other.
The humor was all genuine and very sympathetic, but nonetheless satisfying and effective. There was very little of the slapstick, low humor that is usually relied on in this kind of effort. Also, the movie conveys a sense of the actors' faith and mission, without ever being heavy-handed or "preachy." The director, David Waldram, lets you see what they do and why they do it.
