Discovery who? a real Trek series
30 May 2022
Since Voyager, this is the first time a ST series capture the spirit of the franchise.

  • A chapter contained story
  • Approuchable characters
  • Entertaining
  • Spirit of exploration in every chapter

If you want to create something new, then give it a new name, story and background, be original and dare to do something new (like Firefly).

If you want Star Trek, then watch this one.

A beautiful way to discover why so many called him ''The King''
13 March 2022
This documentary was made by people who love music, it's origins and roots, and Elvis himself. From that startpoint, a fair thing to say would be that it accomplished almost every aspect meant for a piece of this kind: entertain, inform, deliver his music, to show unknown footage, and get you closer to the subject himself.

As it's told in chronological order (with the exception of inserts from the 1968 special very well placed as the turning point it was), you get to know some special aspects related to the music, his state of mind, and the importance of it's roots.

For me, one of the key aspects, it's that there's no images of people offering their interpretation or opinions, only voiceovers from Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Red West, Ike Turner, Emmy Lou Harris, and Priscilla Presley; who clearly appreciate y loved his music.

This reinforced the value of the outtakes, films, early recordings and photograps which where choosed with and evident mastercraft and respect.

The only dissapointment was that there's little mention to the most negative aspects of the person as it as (the infidelities, the camp aspects of his period in Vegas, karate, etc); but at the end it doesn't cloud the fact at hand: he was an ARTIST, a sensitive person, and a full entertainer.

I recommend this documentary, because it made me feel i discover some aspects of him worth knowing.

Malignant (I) (2021)

Entertaining enough, a bit scary, more than the usual movies aroud
10 October 2021
Annabelle wallis and James wan again team up in a movie, with different and unusual result compared to the Annabelle series.

With all the slasher/dumb horror/stupid ghost movies around, and with little expectations before i saw Malignant (the trailer got me somewhat dissapointed), i was pleasently surprised to see myself stuck with the story, and enjoy the twist the main script reserved us.

Obviously it's not the exorcist, not even a horror movie in the conventional sense, but i was entertained, interested and a little surprised by this non conventional story.

Have you seen in recent years a lot of suspense / horro movies wich can fulfill this ? No, ther isn't, so enjoy the movie and give it a chance.

It's a solid 6.5 or 7 , i gave it an 8 because the wave of 3 to 5 ratings doesn't do justice to this one.

Surprisingly good: Judge by how do you feel after you saw it
1 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I stumble with this by accident , a morning before going to work while passing by TNT. Only get to see 20 minutes initially, but i was caught up and search when they played it again.

Plus One is the story of two longtime friends who accompanied each other during that ackward period when you simply lose your friends in the hands of adulthood and marriage.

It's the kind of movie wich is easily mistaken as a shallow and simple story. Romantic comedies are one of the most difficult genre of all, simply because if you don't get to feel a conection with the characters or empathy or ''believe'' what they express, it's only a boring void with a few jokes.

From the beggining, i considered a comedy who dare to address themes like loneliness, fear of failure , and troubled families AND still leaves you with a smile, it's almost a gem.

Special note to Maya Erskine performance, i think it's a star in the making. Funny, witty, a delight to see what she did with the character.

Regarding Jack quaid's Ben, i think it's unfair to see some reviews about the difference between his performance and Mrs Erskine. The dinamic of the couple, would've never worked if both have played in the same level of intensity. They complemented each other quite nicely, and mostly you believed them as friends first and a couple in the making.

I had a good time watching this movie, which is a lot to say these days in cinema, delivers what is supossed to deliver and get you interested in the couple.

For All Mankind (2019– )

Space Exploration , as it was meant to be (Amazing series)
25 April 2021
For all Mankind reconstruct and developed all the political, technical and sociological posibilities if the soviets had reached the moon first.

It's value , as a series, resides in the development of characters within the story; not only the rush end excitement around the competition and final stress of staying definitely on the moon.

I strongly recommend watching the 2 available seasons before judge the series. This is important, because the first season set up the alternate timeline and it has a slower pace in some of the chapters for development of the individual family stories. To clarify this item, i've read that many reviewers criticizes heavily this chapters as boring or wasting time. Nothing far from the truth, because you get to know them, care about them, and gives the story a background for the most fast paced episodes.

If you have watched the movie ''First man'', you will understand that the complexity and closed spirit of Neil Armstrong would not being understood for the moviegoers, if the tragedy of his daughter and colleagues had never been explained.

Second season is a rollercoaster, and usually leaves you desiring for the next chapter.

Technically correct, with excellent special effects, and with all the proyects nasa had planned for different scenarios (moon base, space tug, NERVA nuclear engine, future mars exploration).

Recommend this one for everybody, not only for space fan base, the serieres does not dissapoint.

Blind hate won't make film companies think
23 June 2020
FIrst things first:
  • I don't like remakes, specially from good movies.
  • I don't like when studios try to cash in at my expense

But, c'mon, the idiotic, blind and sexist attack on this movie and the cast it's appalling. I didn't faint from laughing, but it wasn't that bad. And i did smile a lot on different scenes. The female cast did an ok job, not great, but ok.

I'm tired to see a lot of idiots who think a 1/10 star is a statement. 90% of the reviews do not relate with the quality of the movie.

Space Force (2020–2022)

Entertaining and good , although do not expect a cavalcade of laughs
1 June 2020
After seen the first trailer, i realized that this series from netflix was not going to be a string of laughs; but decided to give it a chance, simply because i needed some light comedy. The premise and the title just put a smile on your face (''space force'' ....c'mon), but the execution of the idea is almost acomplished.

Steve Carrel as the commander of the sixth military branch is as always funny, with a good capacity to make gestures and physical comedy, without the need of a spoken joke. This in fact is one of the items being critized in the reviews: not being obviously funny.

The rest of the cast, including Lisa Kudrow and John Malcovich, make a good company for Carrell, but still have to see how the Malcovich's caracther blend in the comedy .

But with the overall idea of the series, i think it wouldn't have worked if a continuous mockery or jokes had been made. I think the chance for this series is that it sets up a story , and gave it a comedy twist.

Not histerically funny , but kept me entertained all the time; hope it can sustain the pace.

Rogue One : Captures the spirit form the original trilogy
26 May 2020
Being a die hard fan of the original trilogy, it would be easy for me to give a lot of credit to the last three movie of the saga. Sadly, i was dissapointed like everybody else.... the last two were almost painful for me. Episode VII had some attributes, but the one picture who did capture THE spirit, essence and joy of the saga, is Rogue One. A lot can be said from this movie, but i would like to assure you this: you won't be dissapointed.

What kind of movie do we expect? Be real and don't follow the haters
15 May 2020
Not every movie is supossed to be Amarcord, casablanca or even young frankenstein. It's not a sin to enjoy a simple movie, to stop the stress fron reality, to take a detour from the horrible things going on in today's world. You're wathching a Happy Madison production, with Sandler's friends, a simple plot and yes, a 50 something year old men dating a 35 year old woman. But i really don't understand the hate; when i want emotion i see Cinema Paradiso. When i want to be really scared , i see the exorcist.... Today, i really wanted to scape, be relaxed, and maybe have one or two laughs.

I disagree with those who said: ''she's so cringe, he's so flat, the script is non existant'' (the latter being truth). Missy as a role is supossed to be unnerving, and the moments of surprising normality from her.....well i can honestly say that i've met people like that, annoying and good persons almost at the same time.

It's not a great movie, but i can honestly say, i'had some fun. And the time flew really quick,

Judge some movies for what it is, not from what is suppossed to be.

Solo : it has a story after all (not magic)
26 May 2018
I'm trying to make an accurate portrait of the movie , not fan driven, without all the media fuzz-hate disney- style-arty rewiers, and other one sided visions i have read lately.

Knowing all the movies (and i've seen all in the theaters, since the original SW), it's fair to say this particular movie is being mistreated.

First of all, it HAS a story, just not a particular epic one, but how many persons always has one? It' the story of a scoundrel, a thief and a betrayed person. So it does justice to the spirit o Han that the original saga built.

The casting , wich i had some doubts, proved to be solid, Alden Ehrenreich delivers a credible Han Solo, wich could have been easily ruined. Not only you believe (after the initial realization that Harrison Ford is no longer around) the character, but i felt confortable with this new face of the iconic character.

The mixture of genre (western, noir, adventure) it's not forced or pushed, and serve the story. To the fans, it's explains almost every item (what do you expect after 40 years and 8 movies??), but with respect y proper treatment of it's aspects.

So, while it's not a groundbreaking story with a new universe of posibilities, it's the story (in my opinion) that makes justices to a character , gives a background, and gives you something unique: entertainment AND fun.

How many movies lately, had give you joy? And, foremost, when i left the theater, that feeling does not disappeared , and it did left me with something. It's not a fade away movie. You don't have to see only Buñuel, Fellini or Lynch to feel good about cinema.

Made with respect, a truly stooges movie
21 July 2012
I'm still surprised about the IMDb users rating or this movie. While writing this review, the current rating it's a 5,3..........amazing, and i will tell you why:

  • If you are a person who has never seen the classic short films or anything related to the stooges, it's simple: whether you like this type of humor (physical, simple, direct and at the same time naive) or you're gonna hate it. But everyone who enters a theater this days, knows exactly what to expect thanks to trailers, viral ads, reviews, etc. So nobody can claim (therefore my surprise about the ratings) to be disappointed about this movie.

This movie recaptures the spirit, feeling and comedy heart the stooges had. I have rarely seen a movie with the level of respect and detail about performers of the past, without falling in a blatant copy or a tragic failure. This movie is not a perfect one, but a truly and carefully crafted homage.

OK, the Jersey Shore section of the movie really bothered me, but even that part of the script was used in a good way.

Don't expect new things, expect to feel like you're 6 years old again, and a smile will be almost all the movie with you.

PD: this is a recreation of the shorts, for a really good movie about the life and suffering of the real stooges, watch the film made for TV, you won be disappointed.

Apollo 18 (2011)

Entertaining if you are open minded: not as bad as the reviews
9 November 2011
Before explaining my impressions, a brief summary: footage presumably found of a non previously known apollo mission and it's fate (Blair witch style of camera story).

A lot of times, discrepancy comes along with certain movies. Some because they are innovative, some due to the complexity of the script, others because they disappoints our expectations (with false promises rising from the trailers or media). None of that will be found here (it's not a profound movie), but we still got discrepancies in the reviews. Why?

The first thing we must remember it's to see it for just what it is: a found footage style of filming. In outer space.....OK? It's not Dogville...

A lot of criticism came out (away) of this premises; and that is the point of misleading data here: It's not Shakespeare, the reactions of the astronauts are limited (everyone who has seen the real footage of apollo, even those of the quiet translunar stage, knows there's no displays of emotions). I do agree that the script could have been strong, but it does the trick.

For a Moon exploration type of movie, the spacecrafts, the suits, the lunar soil and even the cameras are totally believable, more than i expected. The obvious errors (sound in space, the absence of lunar gravity effect on walking) doesn't have a mayor impact on the story.

If you watch this movie for the purpose of entertainment, with the appropriate amount of ''suspension of disbelief'', you won't be disappointed, even though holds not very surprises o scares. But it kept me interested enough until the end, which is not great but still believable.

You won't be left with a sense of fulfillment after it, but it does entertain enough for this type o movie.

Being creative is not always boring
7 August 2009
A man naturally gifted and a problem to solve.........

Since the worldwide economic meltdown, the vast majority of people working at a non independent basis, had a constant worry: how can I sustain my life and family. This HBO series shows us a original way to solve this problem, at least from the male point of view.

The great thing about this, is that the main characters, are so flawed and clueless about their own life, yet so human and relentless when life really pushed you against the wall. Impossible not to relate to the Thomas Jane role, who has seen life passed him by again and again. He really gave the role a distinctive masculine tone, but a real one, with all the faults we may have, and not in a depressing way.

The prostitution issue is not really the point of this production, it only set the background, and provides a lot of smiles (because it's definitely not a hysterical laughing comedy). Since the troubles with his teenage sons, to the ex wife money driven and his own insecurities; the story will get you interested enough, and waiting for more.

Old story, new approach, good development.

Got my vote.

Caprica (2009–2010)
8/10
A promising new beginning
24 April 2009
As a previous follower of BSG, when i watched the trailer for Caprica felt that it was a disappointing twist on a good history. The ''earth like'' environment and the almost OC feeling (teenagers as central part of the plot)misguided me; so my approach to the Pilot was less than enthusiast (in fact it lingered in my HD for almost a week before i actually saw it).

But i (unexpectedly) was proved wrong. The basic plot of Caprica, which by all means could have been destroyed by a conventional Hollywood/LA approach, was slowly and almost masterfully developed. From a weak start, it grows on complexity and in a subtle way developed the essentials roles to a good story.

If you forget the fact that the lead female role (Grayson's daughter) is a given genius, and create a software never seen before; the plot is credible and sustained in the discussion about basic moral values: what life means and what to do with it.

The religious angle, which could have create a difficult and unnecessary detour, was kept at the right dose so it make another foundation for the story. The writers must keep in mind in the upcoming series that this is a double-edge weapon, and could be troublesome if not handled properly.

As some stories which are later developed in a series form, the beginning is good and promising one, intelligent and carefully thought. It deserves a good script to follow on, a mix between a space war approaching (of course i expect to see some sci fi effects) and a TV drama.

If the producers dare to keep the path showed to us in this pilot, and refused to focus in a pubescent approach at Grayson's school and the principal (a weakness well known to capture the higher numbers of viewers in order to sustain ratings, fault seen in The Sarah Connors Cronicles); it might have a great future.

For a story that i was expecting to be disappointing, this was the surprise of the year.

Fringe (2008–2013)
7/10
Worth watching (but forget X Files)
5 July 2008
It was obvious a comparison to the X files because this ones shares some common aspects: rare phenomenons, unexplained deaths, conspiracy theory and a FBI agent teamed up with a classic ''unstable''scientist and his son (also with an IQ above average....).

If you remembers XF (specially the first season), Fringe doesn't stand a chance. But if you manage to see it with a fresh and open mind, you'll enjoy a good pilot episode, with a great (not extraordinary but really good) acting in the leading female role; and special effects that serves to the purpose of telling a story (and not to replace it).

Keep in mind that is a loosely science-based series (teleportation, etc) but this pilot accomplished the first objective: to give a shred of credibility to the story. We will see if the writers manage to sustain this or fells in ridiculous premises like some other science based series.

I recommended this one, let's see how good or bad goes the first season.

Understanding love and it's failures
10 June 2008
I've just finished to see it, so still have a warm feeling that a good romantic comedy (or any good movie, actually) should leave us at the end. A surprise for me, since i've known Ryan Reynolds from the Van Wilder's comedies and Blade last sequel; so i wasn't expecting much.

Definitely.. is a well crafted romantic comedy about an adult man who remembers his past love life (and finally came to understand it) at the same time he's divorcing. And is by the hand of his young daughter (splendid in her role)telling her as a bedtime story, who would eventually be her mom (and the love of his life?). The interaction between Reynold's character and his daughter is for me one of the major highlights of the film. Realistic and not dramatic, it seems like a real father would talk to his child from the heart.

The script develops gracefully and the twist on it feels completely believable, a major point in a story that deals with three different love relationships, many screenwriters could have screwed this up.

All the cast performs well, the pace is just right (not a funny moment at the wrong time, and not an inadequate sad one either); so you can be sure you will be enjoying the film during and not only after.

If you're not a romance buff, stay calm. This one tells you the story from the point of view of a regular guy, with all the classic mistakes we men could do, the work we hate, etc etc.

Good movie, i look forward to see this director new ventures.

Everything to make a good story...........except for a brain behind it
27 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Let's review the original 70's movie (since i haven't read the book, which i'm gonna read after this): An infectious but nouvelle agent menacing mankind, a special team with the ultimate technology gathered to solve the problem, the US government eager to finish it the fast (and not always)the smart way. All with the methodic and reasoned approach that a group of scientist will do in the real life. The team of scientist with absolutely nothing in common except for their knowledge, and the boring-not ''pretty people'' looks of all of them (the female character looks like my oldest aunt). That and a believable story behind it...............

All it's gone in the miniseries.......A few points on the plus side: beautiful scenery, the laboratory amazing and realistic, the same for the computer graphics, viral-bacterial culture devices and the electron microscope.

But the story has so many loose ends :the wife and son of the lead scientist has absolutely no purpose at all, not even to influence the actions of Ben's Bratt character; no clear progression around all the Andromeda discoveries; the continuous mutations of the agent ''explaining'' everything (with no sense at all); and the environmental message some screenwriter (a drunken one i'm sure) put with forceps into the story.

And: 'la creme de la creme': a wormhole!!!!!!!!!!!! and a coded information from the future (insert here dramatic music).

It's amazing for me to see how a number of good pictures, series, miniseries are continuously destroyed year after year during the past decade. This one is another example of the trend.

Do yourself a huge favor: if you are capable of being entertained by the Sci-fi genre, only watch the original movie, and you will be safe..........until Hollywood looks up again in the movie database.

Flashbacks of your own feelings
17 January 2008
I have seen this movie twice, probably the third romantic movie that compelled me to do that, and the reasons are quite simple: It's probably impossible that anyone can't relate to young Josh Hutcherson character, a 11 year's old with a normal middle class life and problems (parents initiating divorce); that it's surprise by the re discovery of a young classmate (Charly Ray's character) initially as an unexpected friend an later as something else...

The well crafted work of director Mark Levin is based on the mutual discovery of all these feelings (mostly new and uncontrolled)that evolved in Josh character and in another particular viewer: you.

Very few movies accomplished the sensation of being part of the life, joy and suffering of a film character, and believe me, that feeling won't disappoint you.

Another plus is the way NYC is portrayed, as the big and marvelous city that is your playground as a child, impossible not to relate to my own ''Big'' Buenos Aires. You will fell in love with it too.

Good acting, great development of characters; but you can summarize this way : you will be surprised with the strange sensation that someone has take a peek into your memories and heart and put it on screen.

Battlestar Galactica: Razor (2007 TV Movie)
9/10
A deep look inside human morale
11 November 2007
After a long waiting period, the series return in form of the second movie (the original miniseries was in fact that). Keeping in mid that not all people have seen the series; this movie introduce in a fast way all the data needed to understand the plot in the first 6 minutes. About the story itself, is a great improvement compared to season 3, explaining the mysterious way the Pegasus survive and giving a much more needed inside the minds of the survivors of the human race.

Almost no previous sci-fi series has taken the job or the respect to their audiences of building a full array of human emotions in the characters, and this create a perfect link to the quite impressive special effects. No hero results perfect, no villain is completely hateful in this story, giving the viewer that precious feeling that you are not being treated like a stupid just to have chosen a ''space movie'' instead of ''Bridges of Madison County''. The sensation after is that you have watched a good film (in general) and a great sci-fi flick.

If you are thinking ''this laser-monkey-suit kind of cinema it's not for me'', you couldn't be more wrong. If, from the other hand, want a well told story, interesting and meticulously crafted narration: this is for you. Saludos from Argentina.

Moebius (1996)
8/10
An evolving mystery....(a sci fi movie without little green men)
6 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
A university math professor with a cinic vision of reality faces a mystery previously investigated by his mentor. In a not so futuristic Buenos Aires (absolutely real, with the size of NY and a huge subway system), Pratt begins a rational search of a lost passenger subway car; only to discover that maybe was always there.....

With an oppressive atmosphere, and without any of the obvious twist in the script that are usually seen in this kind of sci fiction films; Moebius rises as the most believable and interesting picture modern Argentine cinema offered recently.

It's Gothic surroundings, the familiar places (for everyone) that slowly transforms into a mysterious gate for the unknown; drives you gently but with fear to the answer: reality is not what it seems.

Made by film students, it's a great script and a surprising movie; the resolution may seem somewhat sudden and unfinished, but leaves a sense of possibilities (would you make the same decision than Pratt at the end??). It's a must be seen Argentine movie, not an extraordinary one, but any movie that leaves you the impression of having read and excellent suspense book (specially if you did it by night) is worth the effort.
