One Life (2023)
10/10
It must be a 10
28 March 2024
This is one of those incredibly moving true stories that is certain to be rated highly, more because it is Anthony Hopkins playing one of the amazing heroes of our recent past, than the script or filming quality.

Nichola Winton was a good hearted, modest hero of pre-war England. His selfless and dangerous efforts to save hundreds of children from certain death, lifts the heart in the hope that there might still be such people aroind to look after our country, rather than the self centered narcissistic politicians of today.

I was so engrossed in the film that I cannot comment on its quality.

It is a film that all people should see.

Outlander: Turning Points (2023)
Season 7, Episode 8
10/10
Looking towards improving
17 August 2023
The last couple of series have been a little monotonous. This episode has marked a turning point, where things are beginning to happen. I love the program but interest has waned over the last couple of series, as they Frasers have taken on mundane daily life.

Obviously Jamie wasn't going to be dead, but this episode contained some very interesting and historical elements, which had me googling afterwards to do some fact checking.

A great ending to the mid term of series 7. We will keep watching, as we have from the very beginning of this wonderful program.

Anyone new to this must watch from the very first episode, otherwise it won't make much sense.

Amsterdam (2022)

Absolutely brilliant.

Many aspects of this film regarding elite take over of the world, wealth controlling politics and corruption at all levels, could have been easily translated to today.

However, this takes place almost a hundred years ago, when the world was very different, or maybe as it is portrayed, not so different.

The continual switching between comedy and serious drama is present throughput the film. The acting is superb from the whole cast, especially Christian Bale and the beautiful Margot Robbie.

A good evenings entertainment and leaves one with something to think about. I would recommend this to a very wide ranging audience.

Unhinged (I) (2020)

Not his best but worth watching
3 November 2022
I sometimes despair at the review system on here. So many people have given this a rating of 1, which is clearly nonsense.

This is not one of Crowe's best films, but has some strong elements. As a thriller, it earns 7.

As the title says, Crowe plays an unhinged nutter, who has nothing more to lose, so goes on the rampage. Some of the scenes are quite grotesque but no more than one would expect from the character.

Caren Pistorias' role is weak, but improves as the film develops.

I can't say I particularly liked the film, as brutality of this kind is not my thing, but for anyone who likes a hard thriller with plenty of blood and violence, this is well worth watching.

Deep Water (I) (2022)
8/10
Surprisingly worthwhile
26 March 2022
You know, sometimes I despair at the narrowmindedness of reviewers. Just because an actor has made highly rated films in the past, their new films are downgraded if they don't compare.

I think each film should be taken on its own merits, not in comparison to past works.

Deep Water is well worth watching. The characters are believable. The acting is good and the storyline rather novel. One also learns somthing about snails.

Judge for yourself.

Not so bad

What is wrong with people these days? I enjoyed this for what it is, not what it coild be.

The film is low budget, somehow funny, but worth seeing.

Enjoy the show.

Cry Macho (2021)
8/10
To be watched with the right expectations
11 October 2021
Anyone expecting the old Clint Eastwood, with his tough, hard-nosed, killer characters is going to be sorely dissappointed by Cry Macho.

However, watching the film for what it is, a 91 year old exceptional director and actor, playing probably his last film after nearly 70 active years as a filmstar, will bring far more pleasure.

Cry Macho is slow moving, quite funny in places and is well fitting to a man of his age.

Watch with the right expectation and you will enjoy it far more.

Maintaining the Bond Standards
7 October 2021
As someone old enough to have watched all Bond movies as they came out, and never quite accepting that anyone could beat Sean Connery as the real Bond, this latest film rates among the best. The Bondness is maintained, with typical action, a loving Moneypenny, a pretty girl and of course the gadgets, and the obvious reference to a "shaken but not stirred" Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.

Not worth the entrance fee

A very kitchy film for teenies. The acting was poor, the stroryline weak and the 'erotic' moments anything else but erotic.

First Cow (2019)
8/10
Original, but not for action fanatics
12 June 2021
Having read many of the reviews before seeing this film, I was not surprised by comments from those people who have only a one minute attention span, and thrive on endless action, violence and sex scenes, that they found it slow moving.

The film is original in that the two main characters create a meagre existence to live from the first cow in the region. It is clear from the introduction what will happen, although it is never really explained. A film well worth seeing by anyone who prefers to think about a film, rather than just feasting on endless action.

Brilliant but saddening
28 April 2021
Being a Hopkins fan, I was looking forward to seeing his latest film, playing an old man entering the final chapter of his life.

The film is brilliantly played by Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, but was far too violent to my heart for me to say I enjoyed it.

Having fairly recently gone through a very similar experience with my own father just a few years ago, the film brought back, with shining clarity, all of the horrible memories of his final months.

Badland (I) (2019)

Better than expected
23 March 2021
Having seen the previous reviews, I expected this film to be less than mediocre. They were deceptive. Badland is not amongst the western greats, but deserved better. The storyline is good, a touch of Shane, and well worth watching.

Good family entertainment

A good story of real life values and morals pitted against greed and corruption. A film like this makes one think about the important things in life. Well worth watching, with a rather obvious happy ending.

Heart wrenching and thoughtful.
5 October 2020
My wife and I went to see this film, more as an change of environment, after the heavy covid restrictions. I wasn't expecting much from it. To my surprise, I found it extremely thought provoking and heart wrenching. The difficulties encountered to obtain an abortion were presented in a very subtle way, as was the history behind the pregnancy. Much is left to the viewers imagination. A very good and worthwhile film to see.

Tenet (2020)

An attempt to be overly clever and failing miserably
1 September 2020
I went to see this film, full of expectation. Firstly, after the long cinema closures it was good to be a cinema goer again. Secondly, a promised reopening with a highly built up film from the Director of Inception, was certainly going to be worth donning a mask for. Well, it wasn't. The storyline was faulty, the tooing and froing causing initial confusion, which evolved into complete boredom before the final scenes arrived. The film came across as a feeble attempt at hitting a highly complex action thriller with mish mash of crazy, unrealistic ideas. Not worth going out for.

Much better than expected
4 March 2020
The format of the film is excellent. A story, told through a discussion between two crooks. Hugh Grant, who normally doesnt appeal to me, is brilliant throughout the whole film. This is a must see.

Brilliant, funny and very entertaining

Am a big fan of Tarantino and this didn't let me down. Also being a De Caprio and Pitt fan added the icing on the cake. There were some very humorous scenes, with excellent acting and cinematography. A thoroughly well spent couple of hours.

Nothing Special
25 September 2019
The acting was good, but apart from that I found the film slow moving and tedious. Having grown up with Upstairs Downstairs, The Forsyte Saga etc. it may be that I have seen enough of this genre to last me a lifetime. If one has a couple of hours to spare it may be worth your while, but as the title to this review says, the film is nothing special.

Worth seeing but poor ending.
18 September 2019
There are enough reviews here to give a good impression of the film. I can only add that it was better than I had expected. The acting was good. There was a realistic presentation of life with CF shown and an intertwined romance between people who had to stay apart, pulled on the heartstrings. For me, the ending spoiled the film when any form of realism was thrown away.

I don't know how many times I've see this during my life, but today watched it with as much pleasure as always. A light hearted rock 'n roll movie with some great music.
