Metal Lords (2022)
Love every single thing about this movie
I clicked on this movie because the 3 kids were wearing the band makeup, and I knew my daughter would think Hunter was hot. I figured it'd be something she'd enjoy so I'd watch a few minutes of it, then tell her about it if I thought it'd be something she'd enjoy. I, very stupidly, assumed that because it about a bunch of high school kids that the dialogue would be trite, and that the adult characters would all be blithering idiots. I have never been so mistaken!
I love every single moment of this movie! Each character has depth, even the minor characters that we don't get to learn much about. If you were ever a teenager (ha, ha), then you either knew a "Skip", or were a "Kendall", so you know exactly what is going on behind their actions in the movie. The relationship between Hunter and his dad isn't superficial; there's so much pain and grief they don't know how to manage, and they've lost the one person who could have taught them how to help each other through it. Hunter and Kevin's friendship is very much like most high school friendships until they realize what we knew all along. And EMILY!! Isis Hainsworth's portrayal of a young person struggling with mental illness is absolute perfection! The icing on the cake is when Hunter very genuinely asks Emily for her forgiveness for his very public humiliation of her, and Emily responds that she's not ready. What an amazing message to send to young people, women in particular! I wanted her to forgive him! He truly regretted his actions, and he wasn't just saying it to get what he wanted, or just to make his friend happy. But she wasn't ready to forgive, and that's ok.
I could go on and on about this movie, however, nothing I write will do it the justice it deserves. This movie was well-written, well-directed, and the actors are absolutely brilliant all around.
Nate Bargatze: Hello World (2023)
Love this guy!
I saw several of Nate Bargatze's clips on Facebook a few months back so I looked him up. When I found him on Netflix, I watched both specials immediately, and then this special as soon as it released. I love this guy's comedy. I love that his material is so relatable, and Lord help me, I love that it's so wholesome. His bit about birth order is spot on, and it's hilarious.
I came home in a bad mood today and thought, "I bet watching some Nate Bargatze will lighten up my mood" and yup, sure enough, it did. (When I want to sit and stew in it, I watch Tom Segura, but that's a review for another day.)
