The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
possibly one of the best single episodes of any tv show ever
This was a staggering bit of film making. It felt like a feature film despite not having anywhere near the run time of a movie. The actors gave everything and the story was stunning. There will be awards.. mark my words. Whatever happens next in the show will be on the shoulders of this episode. In one episode they delivered a back story and a cross section of the lives of those who have lived through the end of times. No pointless side conversation to paint a picture of what happened just a real love story between two people who managed to live through the end times.
I hope there are a few more episodes like this that build around the main story to give this universe the depth it deserves.
Barbarian (2022)
all over the place
I was quite excited to see that as there was quite a buzz around it. It started off interesting enough but then it turned into a completely different movie.. then it turned into another completely different movie.. then again.
Its like 4 movies superglued together.... badly
As usual the characters make one silly decision after another.
We don't really care about them at all.
The actors all do a good enough job. The film is shot ok. The transitions are handled well.
However, the tunnels scenes are poor.
The old mans story never really come to a conclusion.
What is the "worse than her" that lives down there? Clearly not the near dead old man.
So disappointing after an interesting start.
Jolt (2021)
Ignore the negativity this is a fun movie
I have no idea why there are so many 1 stars. This is clearly a light hearted comic book style movie with some great fight scenes, excellent atmosphere and some amazing camera work.
The tone is very self-aware / tongue in cheek and it rides that line very well.
Very enjoyable daft action movie.
Red Notice (2021)
enjoyable but a missed oppertunity.
First of all.. how often can RR play the same character!!! The guy must have some other mode? Has anyone tried pressing a different button? OK OK I live RR and his one character but surely there is more?
Other than that the film is ok. There are a few laugh out loud moments. However, the "twists" are ridiculously obvious and the plot just an endless list of cliches. I swear you could recreate this whole film just be pasting together a few well chosen clips from other films.
Taken 3 (2014)
sums up everything wrong with US culture
This really is an appalling movie and not just for the plot and camera work which do indeed suck. However, the thing that makes me sick every time I see it is the sheer reckless destruction that the main character unleashes on the world. In his quest to prove is "innocence" he kills dozens of people on the highway, causes millions of dollars in damaged infrastructure and property, assaults (and possibly) kills many police officers.... and walks away a free man.. not even a fine for reckless driving.
Never once is the crimes he racks up even alluded to.
Has the film been a story about how he does all this to extract revenge and the final scene is him being carted off to jail for life the film would at least be redeemable.
However, mass man-slaughter and destruction with zero consequences!!!
Awake (2021)
I think I can fix their problem
The next time there is global event that prevents anyone from sleeping.. just show this moving across all channels at once. Problem solved.
The beginning started well enough.. the middle was slow and the less said about the end the better.
The Walking Dead: Find Me (2021)
40 minutes of my life I will never get back again
The writers must be aware of the criticism of the show.. Too much walking. Painfully slow episodes.
Just to prove they don't get we get two episodes in a row which feature endless walking and then this... the most boring episode of any series I have ever sat through.
The Rookie: Lockdown (2021)
stunning episode
This is a great episode which stands out from a solid TV show. Superb writing and well delivered by the cast.
Monster Hunter (2020)
Its a blast
I have no idea what everyone is moaning about. This movie is pretty much what you would expect. An hour thirty silly military monster bash and it is fab. It has shocks, jumps, humour. The fights are great and monsters convincing.. what more do you want?
Cursed (2020)
still worth a watch
For starters this is based on the Arthurian myths in the same way Britannia is based on British-roman history.. ie loosely. Which is fine. They make this stance clear from the off set so I cant see why all the crying about this in the other reviews.
However, the show and story line are all over the place. The main characters powers change from one episode to the next and it is never made clear what she can and cant do so it is hard to appreciate her story arc at all.
Daniel Sharman,Peter Mullan and Billy Jenkins all put in great performances but the rest of the cast just never seem to commit. Playing fantasy roles is bloody hard and the actors have to be all in if we are going to be absorbed into the story.
Black Lightning (2018)
how is the rated so high
I have no idea who is rating this show. Clearly not the people taking time to review it. The story line is all over the place. The acting is meh. The music is jarring. The costumes comical and the fights just a joke.
Altered Carbon (2018)
season1 : 10 Season2 : 5
Massive let down in the second season. Did Anthony Mackie even bother to watch the 1st season? All the coolness of the main character is gone. Stomped into the ground. There is no reason for anyone to think there is any relation between the two versions of Takeshi.
On top of that s2 is a shadow of s1. Gone is the depth and complexity to a 1 dimensional story that wonders along at its own pace.
It is still a well realised sci-fi universe but...
Really really disappointed.
Sex Education (2019)
facinating
This is a very intruguing mix of 80 / us / uk culture with a 2000's mentatily and somehow it works a treat. There are some genuinely moving points and some characters you come to care about a lot.
The Handmaid's Tale: Household (2019)
still giving it the benefit of the doubt
OK there was some powerful stuff in this episode and the show can still shock the viewer but serious where are you going with this?
We are going around and around in circles. Characters cant seem to make up their mind from one minute to the next.
How are we supposed to be intrigued but the enigmatic Lawrence and his motives while everyone else is just behaving as if on the throw of a dice. It is getting hard work.
By now we should be well into resistance and fight back but we are instead back to the beginning. It is like playing and OLD computer game where you were not allowed to save your progress.
The Boys (2019)
Fantastic show
This was a great 1st season. Well written and acted. The scene with the baby in the hospital had me in stitches. Top job all involved.
The Society (2019)
fanastic little show
We binged this over a week. Starts of well and dips a little in ep 2/3 but completely hooked by 7. I though the cast did a great job especially as some have no previous credits at all.
Everything is believable and there are no stupid decisions for the sake of stupid decisions..
there had better be a season 2
First Man (2018)
Boring boring boring
Ryan Gosling is the most boring, unintesesting actor who consrantly gets cast as boring and uninteresting roles.. either he is brilliant at his job or just boring and uninteresting.
Seriously .. how do you make a film about going to the moon so BORING??
Apparently Neil could not give a damn about flying or crashing or going to the moon
IO (2019)
i have NEVER bailed on a movie before.. till now.
This is the 1st ever movie where having invested an hour I could not make it to the end. normally by this point you think " there is only 30 mins.. something might happen". Nope.. not watching another minute!! You cant make me
Mandy (2018)
We love NC
But this was pretty poor.. turned it off with 40 mins to go.. may try and watch the end but really.. who cares
Doctor Who: Arachnids in the UK (2018)
when do we see the end?
I find it hard to believe that people stuck with the show through the last 2 seasons of drivel but are complaining about this series.
Compared to the Capaldi this is a work of genus.
However, this episode was odd.. do we get to see the end of it soon?
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
easily the best TV series ever made
There is nothing to improve. Ten perfect episodes perfectly delivered.
Ready Player One (2018)
ignore the book moaners
After reading all the negative reviews on here from those who read the book 1st I went and read the book. The film is a perfectly good representation of the book material. Both are great experiences in and of themselves.
Do not be put off.
Mother! (2017)
3rd worst film I have ever seen
The witch is the worst film I have ever seen.. followed by Angel dog.. but this is a good contender for the top place. For a story to be an allegory (for anything) it has to be an actual story.. not just a series of meaningless events. This is a hack attempt at portraying humanities disregard for nature? or something like that. However, the only conclusion you can take away is that god is a narcissistic psychopath who cares for neither his creation or the humans he placed in it only his own adoration. Perhaps that was the film makers point.. who knows.
The killing of the baby was totally gross and uncalled for and worthy of Blood Drive or Evil Dead.
Like The Witch the manner is which is was made was almost as bad as the plot.. cameras were constantly in the face of the protagonist or bouncing all over the place constantly throwing the viewer out of the film back to the living room.
The characters behaviour made no sense .. the poet or the 'mother' or the humans for that matter and the further the film went on the more silly it got. We were laughing by the end it was so daft.
Travelers: 21C (2017)
this is one of the best 45 minutes of TV i have seen for a long time
Every now and then good TV shows throw up 1 episode that is GREAT tv and for traveller's this is it. Everything we have seen to date from 2 seasons comes together perfectly. David's story line which was starting to grate is just slammed in to place while pulling in another key story arc that has been building in the background . Top job all round
Logan (2017)
slow, depressing, plot hole ridden nonsense
We have been putting off watching tis for a while.. The kids did not seem interested but we eventually ran out of things to watch so this was next.
Had we read some of negative reviews we might have been prepared.. However, I had seen a few claiming this was great.. should have known better.
From the start you are hit in the face that every Xman movie that has gone before. including some set in the future are all wiped clean and count for nothing.
All mutants are gone and only wolverine and charges (and presumly a few others) are left. All was for nothing.. quick silver might as well have let them all burn in the explosion at the school.
In this crap vision of the future we run into the plot from Dark Angel (you can add Stranger Things into the mix).. without Jessica Alba. The mutant kids have again broken out of Manticore and one of them was built from Logans DNS.
Max.. I mean Laura is total bad ass and can taken on dozens of armed men.. except at the end when her and your entire band of escaped mutants can't take on anyone.
The whole films is dreary and depressive. Jackman and Stewart ham it up as best they can.. but by the end we are left wondering why bother. They could so easily have thrown in a happy ending which would have justified the previous 2 hours.. but no.. the kids run over the border to Canada to an uncertain future with no one to guide them.
