Foundation (2021)
Annoying religious nonsense
This show has some watchable scenes, but the overarching storyline just ruins everything. Makes no sense for most of the time and it is quite annoying to listen to the blabber of an imaginary religion. It goes to a point where it feels like this is some sort of christian missionary disguised as pseude-philosophical story. Overall a waste of time.
Encounter (2021)
Very misleading
Why, oh why is this being advertised as Sci-Fi? There is basically no Sci-Fi in this one. The tragedy is that the rest would be watchable, even somewhat interesting, but this completely inaccurate, misleading description makes you wait for something that never happens. Maybe the person that wrote the description stopped watching after a few minutes?
Boss Level (2020)
This never gets old
If you liked Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow you will very likely enjoy this one, too. The story of reliving the same day over and over again until you get it right never gets old, at least for me. It was entertaining with good humor and action, one of the best popcorn movies this year so far.
Without Remorse (2021)
Disappointed, too
Regardless if this is the book or not, it is just a bad movie. Several times I was thinking "should I just turn it off?" while watching. It will forever remain a mystery to me how this sort of movie gets greenlighted. The Kindergarten-logic throughout the movie bothered me the most. Do not waste your time.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Very disappointing
I was curious to see what other fans have to say about this one and am really surprised about this favourable rating. Maybe most of it came in during the first three episodes? Maybe because until then the lack of logic and storytelling wasnt that obvious.
It is quite irritating to see that they seemingly had all the money in the world, but just no real story to tell. High profile actors doing a amateur piece. If they had just cut episode 5 completely nobody would have noticed. There is so much more obvious weird stuff going on I dont want to go in to, there is just no way there will ever be a second season - having that said I realize they are actually considering it. Be advised: nobody is waiting for that. The franchise credit you had is already gambled away.
Pope: The Most Powerful Man in History (2018)
no historical proof
I wish they had mentioned that basically none of the storys presented in this series is in any way proven. For example the quote that "on this rock i will build my church..." was probably never said by the historical jesus (whose existence is a whole other story). The man believed that the end is near, so he had no reason to build a church that would last for millennia. In 3 out of 4 gospels this sentence is not included.
After 10 minutes I was out of this show. This is missing all of the actually interesting historical questions. They should have talked to some scholars who are not as affiliated with church as those featured or at least the better informed ones within church. What this series presents as the beginning of christianity is just a world of make-believe.
Mindhunter (2017)
Excitingly new
After finishing this show I realized that it is the first one since quite some time that I have actually watched completely. There are so many TV-Shows these days and yet so few seem worth the time. This one definitely is. Haven't been a Fincher Fanboy but could become one now. I was well entertained and even learned something valuable. That is a really nice combo. Intense atmosphere, no nonsensical scenes (at least not by my standards), a story worth telling, convincing characters and thus no need for special effects to conceal story holes. Very nice. My new favorite show. Until the next one comes.
American Gods (2017)
better then the book (so far)
This show got me excited and made me pick up the book, which i finished today. Have to say that the show is doing a way better job so far in avoiding all the silliness that is piled up in the book (3 ep. in). If they can keep it up and change the story line accordingly, it deserves even more stars. If it takes the same development as the book, its steering toward a not very convincing resolution and even worse twists and detours. But I trust that the producers have a good feel for what is necessary and what is not. In fact, the book gets quite annoying half way in. Really hope the show does not. Have read other works of Mr. Gaiman and liked them, this one is the weakest.
Taking Earth (2017)
bad, but still... (with some sort of spoiler)
Totally agree with the reviews before, this movie is flawed on so many levels, and yet, like the other guys, I watched it to the end. And that alone makes it worth 5 stars for me. Usually I stop immediately watching when the thought "this is bad" pops up in my head, but here i kept watching. Extra star for some OK action, even a bit of OK humor and the cgi wasn't that good but it didn't make me cringe either. All of this strategically well placed in the first half of the movie that carried me until the end in expectation of more - but that didn't come. Instead, the overall dialogue went from bad to omg, story completely collapsed and this tentative gay thing the two male characters had going was quite distracting, because I don't think it was supposed to look gay. Probably the result of the generally not so great acting (being polite here).
Anyway, when I make it to the end it usually means it was entertaining of sorts and this is true for Taking Earth. Obviously they had a very limited budget and that excuses a lot, but not everything. Would I recommend it? Hmm, it made a lasting impression on me and led to my first review here, so yes, if you like Sci-fi go ahead and watch and learn.
