Dunkirk (2017)
Wish I had missed this one
I've just come from seeing Dunkirk, and I would say that it would have been no colossal loss not seeing it. I nearly left on account of the music several times. It was dragging, tense, and full of disharmony throughout nearly the entire movie. If you've no seen it yet, I would suggest that it's not worth the price of admission. There's my 2¢.
Transmorphers (2007)
horrible torture for movie viewers
This has got to be among the worst films ever. As others have mentioned, the effects take us back to a pre-computer era of special effects, possibly even pre-claymation. And the acting is equal, if not worse (with the notable exception of Matthew Wolf, who practically carried the whole thing on his shoulders). Anytime you are left with the feeling of "hey! this reminds me of that film that I shot with my 8mm when I was a kid" (I'm talking 8mm movie camera, not the more recent video cameras), or when the acting is like the tape recordings you made at 2-3 in the morning when your parents were asleep -- yeah, you know the ones -- where everyone was trying to do their best imitations of someone they were not, and nobody could keep from cracking up, -- well, you get the point.
But all this I could have put up with (it actually has a decent plot), but for the lesbianism, which is sprung on you by surprise. There is no forewarning on the DVD case. It adds NOTHING to the story at all, which couldn't have been conveyed better by a normal, healthy relationship.
Here's hoping that there will someday be remake, fitted out with modern special fx and mature, grown up actors -- oh, and hold the gay; I'll take my movie straight, please.
Knights of the Round Table (1953)
Friendship Quote
A great quote from this movie is inscribed on a ring that King Arthur gives Sir Lancelot on Christmas Eve. As Arthur passes the ring to Lancelot, Lancelot reads this inscription:
"Friend shall I be; Call me not other. This is a pledging, 'Twixt brother and brother."
Though perhaps not the best movie, by modern standards (graphically speaking), it was still well done, has beautifully colorful costuming, and presents an Arthur, devoid of magic, as the true Arthur would have been. The only thing approaching magical in this film is the obligatory "sword in the stone."
Dream Warrior (2003)
Defrauding Cover
This movie was a big waste of time. The knight on the front cover of the DVD never appeared in the movie at all. I got the distinct feeling that the movie was filmed with a home video camera ... or perhaps the person who said cellphone camera was not too far wrong.
It's time for bed, but I almost have to watch another movie, just to flush this one out of my mind.
I would say that this movie borrowed heavily from Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. I expect that it will not be too long before we see it available on the dollar movie rack at our local grocery stores.
One positive note. This movie gives me new hope. When I was 13, I got a movie camera for my birthday, and a friend and I shot some take-offs on Indiana Jones. Seeing this movie in Blockbuster gives me hope that my movie might some day make it there, too. I pity the poor sap that rents it, though.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Respectfully Disagree
I would like to respectfully disagree with jackzen from Wales. To be fair though, I will preface this by saying that I never saw the original TV shows, and if there was a book, I never read it.
But, that said, I would say that this movie stands as a fine piece of work in it's own right. It was, I believe, very well acted and filmed, and I believe that the plot was basically good. I did however dislike the ending, but don't feel that it was a fault of poor plot, just personal taste.
I won't say more, because I don't want to spoil this for anyone that has not seen it. I believe that it is a movie you will enjoy watching.
