Disappearance (2002 TV Movie)
6/10
Intriguing movie
1 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is quite a good movie in terms of acting and suspense but lacks a definite ending. The only silly scene is when Patty, the step mother falls at least fifty feet down a mineshaft (which happens to be directly under a boardwalk) and doesn't break at least her ankle! The acting is however quite good. Odd things start happening as soon as the family ask about the ghost town called Weaver they find on a map and everybody they ask in the diner says it doesn't exist. No need to go into details but one soon gets the idea that everyone is a ghost or a zombie! An old guy in the Sherriff's jail cell (town drunk?) hints at alien activity and Area 51 (of course!) after they report the eldest boy missing. All quite predictable really but the ending could have been more certain, i.e. Aliens or ghosts at work? The family decide they're not going to stay to rest overnight when the boy is found but to get out of town quickly instead. The dad then swerves to avoid hitting a strange 'being'? First heard but not seen in the mineshaft and the car crashes. In the last few minutes, the family of course have now become 'residents' of the town. Are they ghosts, possessed by aliens or what? You decide!

Good acting by Reeve, but!
10 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has one GIGANTIC flaw. The idea that someone could snoop on the activities of people in the block across from theirs (all of whom don't have curtains or blinds) without them noticing him is frankly ridiculous. This movie is a good vehicle however for Reeve with some important comments on the problems of his major disability following his tragic accident and is well outlined and enhanced by his good acting. Brit villain of course is a good touch. We Brits seem to popular as baddies in a number of movies! Darryl Hannah's performance is I'm afraid quite poor. Mind you, can't forget her from Blade Runner! The ending is very mediocre I'm also sorry to say.

Really scary
14 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
John Cusack is excellent in this as a debunker of ghosts and hauntings. The manager (Samuel L Jackson) does everything he can to dissuade Cusack renting room 1408 for the night! No one has lasted a full night in the room for example. He is forced to rent it however due to some local statute.

We'll, things start off mildly for our investigator but gradually build up to a crescendo of frightening events that force even him (and you?!) to accept that ghosts exist!

The special effects are excellent. I advise that you don't watch this movie on your own late at night! (No, really!) Think of the scariest movie you've watched, then watch this. If it doesn't make you jump a few times, you're really tough!

Better than you might think
17 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I was surprised with this movie. It is much better than I thought it would be. Charlie Sheen's acting track record isn't great and he starts off quite bad (trying to imitate his dad in Apocalypse Now, sort of?), but he starts to act appropriate to the role after about twenty minutes. The film has the right pace for the genre and it isn't boring as one reviewer has written. Worth your time.

Sorry, but can't believe it

Warning: Spoilers
I'd like to but I can't take this documentary seriously even though I have an open mind about the subjects dealt with. As has been written, there's no evidence produced and no photos. One impossibility just as an example is the acorn-shaped object with 'hyroglyphic' (cyrillic?!) - as described - text on it that came down like a meteor. Anything that came down at meteor speed that could fill a flat-bed truck would destroy at least ,I think, the nearby town with the impact crater and shock wave produced! And what's so special about the location (beautiful as the countryside around is) anyway? Intelligently done though nevertheless and oddly, worth a watch.

Quite simply great!!
1 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I've just watched it and quite simply it is one of the best horror movies I've seen. It well deserves the high ratings it has on this site. The plot is simple really but very well done. Some comedy at first which may tempt you to give up on it early on. But stay with it as there are some REALLY horrific scenes! It's something that Stephen King might have written but didn't; shades of 'IT' for example.

Rubbish Rubbish, and Rubbish again
5 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Why all the high scores? This is the biggest load of tripe you'll ever watch. Perhaps one has to be of low intelligence like me to see what a load of absolute rubbish this is! Come on you super beings. What is it all about? I had high hopes at the beginning, in fact most of the way through, then it turned into something; oh I don't know! Help me!

OH DEAR!
3 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I've just spent (fortunately I suppose!) only £3.99 on this garbage. I'm only 30 minutes in and the howlers are awful! For a start it seems to be a version of Conrad's Heart of Darkness (Apocalypse Now). Pitt gets to the moon ona craft and there's obviously no gravity, but on the moon there's earth equivalent gravity! They set off for the 'dark side', get attacked by pirates (yeah!) and the dark side is actually dark!!!. Good grief! The moon doesn't have a dark side. Anyone who doesn't know that, read some basic science about the moon.

Can I stand the rest of this unworthy vehicle for Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones and even Donald Sutherland?

Great gangster movie. Ben Kingsley as a character you will not see him anything like in any of his other movies. A real nasty piece of work!

Cold. Brrrrrrr!
13 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Some of, if not the best, acting at being cold you will ever see! Including 'Scott of the Antarctic'! One of my favourite 'B' movies, but the plot isn't really too bad.

Creepy but also informative
5 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is a creepy 'ghost' story and informative for non-jewish viewers. I now know what a shomer is for example. The movie is as much about Rubin's redemption for the death of his brother. He suffers badly mentally because of this and is taking medication, so one cannot perhaps rule out the effect of his medication for what he sees, rather than the mazzik which possessed the deceased after he was forced to shoot his sister (?) by the concentration camp guard?

Really quite good
4 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I was surprised at how good this movie turned out. Basically the devil obtains messianic power on earth as a woman rather than a man. The acting is good by everyone. Dougray Scott is superb as an American! Pena though is somewhat miscast I think. Yes, it's a typical exorcist movie but well worth a watch. Not as good as The Exorcist but not far off.

Awful!
3 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've just watched this trash for the first time in about fifteen years. The story is terrible and the acting just as terrible by all the high end actors involved (Freddie Jones for example, come on!). This movie is based on a silly novel (I've even got it on my e-reader, woe is me)! It's as bad as another silly fantasy novel involving elves etc. I think. The title escapes me just now! How Lynch persuaded such a cast of accomplished actors to be involved in this rubbish is beyond me. There, I've said it. Someone has to be the boy with the king and his new clothes!

Spooky
29 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A pretty scary ghost movie this. One of the best I've seen. Dubbed English dialogue done very well in that the voice actors don't sound as if they're amateurs reading from a script! Put it this way, I recommend you don't watch it late at night - on your own! Unexpected twist at the end.

This is a badly acted, silly and violent movie with a daft ending. It is unworthy of the director of JFK and Platoon.

Good little (comedy?) drama
6 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I found this movie (Lineage of Lies, UK Netflix) quite enjoyable and maybe I shouldn't say this, but amusing! Robin Riker acts well, the others not quite as good. Implausible though how a (60 plus?) woman physically totes around dead or unconscious 30 somethings! Well worth the watch despite that. Oh, and by the way, it's not unusual for grannies to be attractive!

The Turning (2020)

A good adaptation
12 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I really don't know where all the low scorers are coming from with this movie. They either haven't read James' novella or perhaps more importantly they haven't read a literary criticism of it. The question of whether the governess (Kate in this adaptation) is really seeing ghosts or is mentally disturbed has puzzled literary critics since the novella was written! In this movie Miles is not a young boy but a rather obnoxious but also somewhat typical youth! And his treatment of Kate is not noticed or accepted by the useless housekeeper Grose and so he gets away with it. The point is the reader, or viewer in this case, has to decide if the ghosts are real or in the governess's imagination.

I didn't find this movie boring as I certainly did The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is an overly long adaptation of The Turning of the Screw, which is after all a fairly short work.

Well acted horror
18 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a very bloodthirsty horror movie, but the first twenty minutes or so are somewhat boring in exploring the relationship of the victims to each other. But it sure gets going after that. My only complaint is that the camera operator/s can't hold the camera steady for most of the movie! I don't know if this was done for effect. If it was it doesn't work. If it wasn't, maybe they let a trainee camera operator handle the shooting! And some of the framing is bad too. Despite this, it is definitely worth your watching.

Innocent but nasty
4 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is a horror movie like no other. Like no other because the 'evil ones' are very young children. A simple Christmas gathering turns into a nightmare when the kids seem to act together to inflict awful injurys of various sorts on the adults, including death. Why they do it is never explained, and that's part of the horror. What they do comes from nowhere. A really must see.

Morituri (1965)

A gem of a movie
9 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Where has this great movie been hiding! Morituri or roughly translated, 'We who are about to die' from the supposed salute by gladiators to an emperor. The acting by everyone in this movie is superb. And for a mid-sixties war movie it puts many more well known examples from the same period to shame. Brynner is brilliant, even better than he is in the first (and the only version worth watching) of Magnificent Seven, and that's saying something. Also, I'd never seen Brando act as well as well as he does in The Godfather - until I saw him in this.

And the low level arial shots (at sea bear in mind) look as if they were done from a drone they're so good. But of course they weren't because they were done in the sixties!

A must watch!

Good thriller........ but (Series 2)
29 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Good thriller but I've got a question. I'm not Australian but Anthony Laplaglia's villain pilots a motor launch all the way to West Papua? The distance is immense even from the nearest point on the Australian mainland......... isn't it?! They leave in the launch and don't board an aircraft for part of the journey - because they arrive in the launch. Did I miss something?

Dark and nasty
21 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Very dark and nasty movie. Mum and her two girls go ahead of dad to their lakeside cabin. A guy helps them open the padlock on the chained gates leading to the cabin. No, don't jump to conclusions! After a while, gory things start to happen. Come on you low scorers! It's fiction, the villain is insane, and the girls are children who are very scared. I certainly would be too! Oh, and he does sort of tell us why he's doing it. He's a nutter!

Well acted suspense
14 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A very good sequel to Psycho. Well acted but too many references I think to the first movie (kitchen knives, shower scene etc.) However, I deliberately didn't watch this movie for years as I consider Psycho to be a tour de force, but I'm glad I finally did.

Yeah, there's the toddler left to bring up the rear of the group. Daft! Then there's the mom telling her boy that he's alright to go with dad as dad will protect him! Daft! Yeah, and mom's going to have a (noisy) baby! Daft! And our brave family could never be quiet enough to avoid creatures dependant so much on sound for their survival! Why all the high scores?
