La casa de papel (2017)
Good premise, poor execution
Seize the mint, print a billion Euro, and escape! Good idea, but...
As the story developed, there was so much romance and interpersonal conflict, I began to wonder if this was a heist story or a soap opera. I began fast-forwarding through the sappy parts of who is doing who and who is falling in love with whoever.
Other problems with this is the Chief Inspector Raquel is the most incompetent police officer since Inspector Clouseau! She makes utterly stupid decisions, ignores the obvious, and is simply hateful toward her colleagues all the while screwing up the entire operation. Additionally, the police force overall is awful. They must have all gone to the Star Wars Stormtrooper's Academy for their shooting skills.
None of the characters were likeable and most were simply annoying, if not slimey. I won't be watching any of season 3 or other seasons. Neither should you.
Ahsoka (2023)
Enjoyable "sequel" to Star Wars Rebels
Having heard many bad things about "Ahsoka," I was a bit cautious about watching it, fearing I would be disappointed. I was worried over nothing as I really enjoyed it! The story by Filoni is solid, the casting and acting is excellent. I particularly found Winstead to be a perfect Hera Sindulla, Kudos to her. Sure, there are going to be some slow parts, what show or movie doesn't have that? You can't have phew-phew gun fights constantly. It's called "pacing." There were a few spots in the light sabre fights that looked a bit weak or tired, but it really isn't anything to complain about. Otherwise the CG effects were movie quality. I hope we get a second season of this.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Overly long, poorly-edited satire
All-star cast cannot save a poor editing job. Far too much plot baggage weighs down what is an interesting concept: What will be the reaction to an extinction event. One can imagine the government downplaying an impending comet strike to prevent panic, but all the plot asides bog down this flick. I had to skip the useless Ariana Grande concert just to move things along. Other bits required similar use of the fast-forward button. Watch the first 30 minutes or so, then skip to the last 30.
Blood Red Sky (2021)
Good Friday Night Flick
Lots of fun and a bit different. Sure, it drags a bit in the second half, and it could lose about 10 minutes run time with tighter editing, but grab the popcorn and enjoy!
Lovecraft Country (2020)
A muddled mish-mash
This is a blend of sci-fi, suspense, and horror, but lacking in all three genres. Often confusing, and packed with plotlines that lead nowhere, one winds up not really caring about the characters enough to even remember their names. I found myself rooting for the bad guys. Overall, it was all pointless with no emotional or intellectual payoff.
Hubie Halloween (2020)
Make him stop!
Adam Sandler hits a new low with this one. Poor acting, terrible script littered with smutty jokes and gags, transparent predictable plot. The premise: A mentally challenged man is bullied by almost everyone in town due to no reason but cruelty. Of course, in the end the village idiot saves the day and becomes beloved. The film is filled with forgotten B-listers, except for Julie Bowen and Steve Buscemi who know their craft well (I hope they got paid handsomely and don't put this thing on their resumes). Hubie Halloween is an insult to even those with the lowest IQ.
