Anyone But You (2023)
The most predictable, generic and cliche movie humanly posible, also full of an unbelievable amount ofconviniences.
I'm a man and I was dragged to see this movie by my female friends. I didn't want to see it because it looked like one of the most generic, predictable and cliché movie I have ever seen...and I was right. I wasn't expecting an art piece from a low budget movie but it has so many clichés,conviniences and stereotypes that it felt like a deliberately parody of a "romantic movie". List: The "you shouldn't had to heard that, it's not what it looks like" *runs away and doesn't let explain*; The main characters hating each other because of said artifical misunderstanding that could had been solved with a text message; time jumps, because the movie can bother to portray realistic scenarios that leads to the main characters and supporting roles to conviniently know each other and ALL of them been invited to the same wedding; The destruction of the wedding cake by accident by the main couple and then the marrying couple using the same cake in the wedding despite the marrying couple been obscenely rich by the look of the house; The main couple fighting, making everyone upset, then the supporting characters trying to force them to be together, then the main characters pretending to love each other so they can be left alone, to finally fall in love for real; the objectification of the male lead for the obviously mostly female audience (I mean, it's 2024 and he is treated like a piece of meat, he pull out his shirt like 10 times and get naked for stupid "comedic" reasons, is so blatant and disgusting, people would lose it if the genders were reversed); the "I broke with my ex boyfriend because we never fight" which perpetuates and validate toxic traits; the stereotypical token black character with the accent; the himbo best friend that is conveniently also dating the ex of the male protagonist; the love triangle (the female ex that out of jealousy wants the male lead back with her and it's conviniently also invited to the same wedding); Yet, even more conviniences: the ex in the wedding kissing the male protagonist and the female protagonist running away so the male protagonist can chase her in a very over the top and dramatic way to a scenic landscape (jumping in the Sydney bay, so an emergency helicopter can save him and give him a ride in front of the Sydney Opera House). It offers nothing new, nothing fresh, nothing interesting. It was so bad I couldn't even turn off my suspension of disbelief. I only smirked (not laughed) with a joke at the beginning. The only other positive is that the pan out panoramic shots are beautiful.
Kaubôi bibappu: Cowboy Bebop (1998)
It's like true love at first sight, you either feel it or don't.
This is a "must see" and I see why, is very well crafted, the animation is amazing considering it's from 1998 and the story is very cryptic and alluring. It's very unique and special, but, because of that, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. This story is very episodic, with a few glimpses here and there of the overarching story and the past of the main characters, some episodes have a very good story but others not so much. The last four episodes explains everything and ties everything, but the finale is open ended, and, in my personal opinion, kinda rushed. I see why people like and I can appreciate it as a work of art, but I personally didn't like it much, I just saw it because it was pushed to me as a "must see" (and I don't regret seen it) but I was expecting a twist or turning point like Steins;Gates did in episode 12, when it truly kicked in. I recommend it? As I said in the title, you either feel it or don't, and like love, it's not anyone's fault.
Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi (2023)
If you want a chill (slow), moderately funny, slide of life anime, revolving around cooking, then this Anime is for you
If you want a chill (slow), moderately funny, slide of life anime, revolving around cooking, then this Anime is for you. I recommend taking notes for this Anime, I didn't know that Japan had so many variety of delicious foods. The truly interesting thing about this Anime is the cooking and the dishes you can research later. It's entertaining and it cheers you up if you are in sa down mood. The action scenes are not very engaging since the main characters are overpowered, but that's expected on a Isekai. The animation is good. The characters are chill, my favorite was the slime (sui), is very cute and useful.
The tale of outcasts (2023)
If you are a fan of Kemono (Furry) characters you will love this
If you are a fan of Kemono (Furry) characters, I recommend this. The demon's design are very interesting. The plot is simple, the motivation of the villains/antagonist pretty basic, but it's all enjoyable. The animation is good, with the exception of the horses pulling the chariots (they have an uncanny 3D animation that you can't unsee). It's not a profound master piece (there's a lot of plot conviniences) but it's enjoyable, though, I find it character of wisteria bland, immature, uninteresting and annoying for my taste. I hope a little bit of more character development in the future. If there's a season 2, I'm interested on the lore of the thirteen calamities.
Midsommar (2019)
The reaction of the people around you is more scary than the movie itself.
This is the type of movie where the reaction of the people around you is more scary than the movie itself. The movie is around cults, how they pull the right strings, manipulate your vulnerability and desire to "belong" to commit horrible injustices and to over react to upsetting things. If you believe that the end of the movie is a "happy ending", then congrats, you're the type of person who believes to be "too smart" to join a cult, but in fact you are the most easy to manipulate into join one. On a site note, never stay with someone who you don't actually love just because you feel pity for them, you're just hurting both. At the end, the protagonist just changed one toxic relationship for another. People say is a "happy ending" because she makes the cult kill her boyfriend by burning him alive, because he "cheated" (the cult drugged him and he was actually raped, but she didn't know that, the cult lied to her), but the fact she thought that he deserves to be burned alive because of that, is beyond me (or to any reasonable person with a cold head). What is scary is that people think this is "empowering". If the gender were reversed then they would say otherwise, which says a lot about out horrible society. If you like it, I recommend the wicker man 1973.
Nakitai watashi wa neko o kaburu (2020)
A flawed main character, which makes her human
The main character, is very unusual, she has a bubbly personality but it's own contradictions, struggles and obsessions causes her to mishandle her problems, this would looks like non sense or irrational from the perspective of an outsider, but is very in tune with what a moody pre teen obsessed with a boy would do. The villain is not particularly strong in this one. Also, the resolution ends up a bit forced, it's plausible that two people fall in love or develop a platonic relationship after passing a near death experience, but in my opinion it felt forced, specially considering the personality of the boy, it felt like it was a result of stockholm syndrome or pity, not true love. You can grow to like someone, but in this case, it was obvious that the boy didn't feel attracted to her, but the plot needed him to love her at the end, thus to have a traditional happy ending, that's why it felt forced.
Steins;Gate (2011)
Not for everyone, but 100% recommend if some anime tropes don't bother you
This anime is amazing and unique. The main character, okarin, looks crazy and unlikable at the beginning, but believe me, you will miss it when the character evolves. It stars slow and confusing, it gets really good since chapter 12. Both seasons of the show tie everything perfectly. It's a little bit confusing at the beginning, but at the end of both season, you will understand everything (that tend to happen with time traveling shows. I recommend the order given by the community, leave the last two episodes of season 1 until you have seen both seasons and one of the ovas). My only pet peeve is that because of the perverted character trope, Daru, I can't recommend it to anyone, that could be dropped and it would be perfectly mainstream.
A Little Late with Lilly Singh (2019)
Not funny or entertaining
Curious how the audience never laughs, just cheers, because is not funny/entertaining is an elitists condescending political lecturing.
