The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
One of the most disappointing tv shows ever
Season 1 was perfect, season 2 started well but ended horribly. I tried watching season 3 but just couldn't get past how nonsensical it was. The writing has gone downhill since it went past the book similar to game of thrones. Another thing the show shares with game of thrones is how the showrunners have increasingly relied on closeups of the actors nonverbally making faces at the camera. The main character is unlikable and has plot armor and the other characters are inconsistent. I find it hilarious that people take this show so seriously when it stopped making sense last year. If you want to be taken seriously don't use the word mansplaining unironically like they did in season 3. Oh and another thing, my review of season 3 episode 2 was deleted so I'm giving the show a 1/10 instead of 5/10 which is how I actually feel. Fortunately it seems like other people are starting to realize how bad this thing is now
The Handmaid's Tale: Night (2019)
Very close to quitting
How is June still alive? If the leaders of Gilead are so horrible (which they are) how come they haven't killed June yet for all the trouble she causes. Bradley whitford's character makes no sense, sometimes he risks his life to help handmaids other times he's the worst person in Gilead. There's a difference between complex and nonsensical, this is the latter. Combine the nonsense with all the boring and pointless staring and you have a premiere that feels like the finale of game of thrones. Season 1 was perfect, season 2 was good but the ending was awful. Not only was it a bad ending but it breaks the show and this episode is the proof. I'll probably stop watching this season. Oh and another thing, apparently the writers are so lazy they gave this episode the same title as the season 1 finale.
Game of Thrones (2011)
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO RATE THIS
Seriously though, how do you rate something with a perfect beginning, a good middle, and an awful ending that butchers every character and plot line? The show used to have logic, it used to have real stakes and consequences. It used to have a large group of memorable unique and complex characters. It used to have a great mix of fantasy, drama, and politics. The last two seasons lost all of this. Before when characters died it was surprising yet didn't come out of nowhere, in season 7 and 8 characters just die for shock value. I appreciate the show for what it once was and I respect the actors and crew but the writers really messed up. If you honestly believe the finale was perfect then you didn't get what the show was about.
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
MAJOR SPOILERS Better than last week but...
Why did they have to ruin Jaime. His redemtion arc has been building since season 3 and now they have him go back to cersei? Why? Also, the first few mintues were kinda boring with either romantic nonsense or characters getting drunk. On the other hand I loved all the political discussions. Its clear now that daenerys will be a villain (take that everyone who said i was hating on her for no reason). Tyrion and varys had some really great conversations and it was nice to see varys actually doing something again. There were some other good moments between the stark kids, and arya and the hound Rhaegal's death was surprising the final scene was interesting if a bit over the top. I'm certainly interested to see where they go although I'm still pissed about the white walker storyline and jaime's character being ruined
American Gods: Treasure of the Sun (2019)
MAJOR SPOILERS Finally a good (not great )episode
Season 2 has so far been mostly boring filler with little character development or story progression. This episode finally had some of both not to mention Sweeney's story was very well done and his death was very sad. Too bad him and Laura were the only good characters. Without him I'll probably stop watching after episode 8. On another note am I the only one who hates shadow? He was boring in season 1 and refused to believe anything he saw was real. Now in season 2 sweeney and laura keep telling him not to trust Wednesday yet he refuses to listen even though Wednesday is clearly manipulating him. Then after all of that he kills sweeney who like I said was the best character.
Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2019)
Great calm before the storm epsidoe
I bet all the people complaining about the slow pace are the same ones who complained about the rushed pace of season 7. This was a great build up episode, very intimate, funny, emotional and character focused. Next week will be all action and the same people complaining about the slow pace will complain about how the show has too much action and not enough politics now.
Game of Thrones: Winterfell (2019)
Great start MAJOR SPOILERS
I thought almost everything was perfect. They handled all of the reunions well especially Jon and Arya, and Jon and Sam. The episode was really funny but also emotional especially the ending with Sam and daenerys and then sam telling jon about his parents. I think they did a good job of bringing back some of the morally gray aspects into the show by mentioning how horrible Daenerys can be and showing the way her actions affected sam. Also it was interesting how Varys, Davos, and Tyrion were plotting without telling Jon or Daenerys. I really liked how Jon kinda admitted that daenerys isn't nearly as selfless as he is. I also liked how sansa and arya were wary of daenerys. Keep in mind neither of them have seen the whitewalkers so to them its more about how jon gave up everything to serve the daughter of the mad king. Acting was really great as well, I thought Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke had much better chemistry here than in all of season 7. Overall, the episode was well paced, had a good focus on character, and was entertaining yet had some really dark moments like with ned umber. The only problem I had was how easily theon rescued yara. Can't wait for next week, I figured this episode would end with Jaime arriving at winterfell and I was right.
American Gods: The Ways of the Dead (2019)
When is something going to happen?
Like others have said this season has mostly been wheel spinning and filler and this was no exception. Season 1 ended with Easter causing a famine and the gods officially declaring war yet none of this seems to really matter in season 2. Can season 3 just be a road trip starring Sweeney and Laura? Those two are the only ones I still care about
American Gods: The Greatest Story Ever Told (2019)
If this is the greatest story ever told...
Then I'd hate to see the worst. Okay it isn't that bad, but it is a bunch of filler that doesn't go anywhere. The few things that do progress the story are things I didn't care about and that came out of nowhere like Technical Boy somehow being obsolete. Also I still have no idea who I should be rooting for. Shadow is boring, the new gods are clearly set up as the villains but the old gods especially Wednesday seem just as bad. The only likable characters are Laura and Mad Sweeney and they weren't even in this episode. The show still has good acting and an interesting style but I'm slowly getting tired of it. Also I think it's funny how Ian Mcshane and Ricky Whittle trashed Game of Thrones. Even the worst Game of Thrones episode is still better paced and more emotional than every american gods episode combined.
The Walking Dead: The Calm Before (2019)
Really?
So walking dead kills off some side characters no one cared about just for shock value and now the show's idiot writers think they made something equal to the red wedding which not only killed off characters people liked but completely changed the story? No wonder the walking dead's ratings keep dropping
The Big Bang Theory: The D & D Vortex (2019)
One of the better episodes of the season
This felt like an older episode of the Big Bang Theory. It didn't have too much relationship drama and was more about geek/nerd culture. The scene where Will Wheaton yells at the guys was particularly great
Game of Thrones: Beyond the Wall (2017)
MAJOR SPOILERS The Only Truly Bad Episode of Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones is my favorite tv show of all time. While there other shows that might have stayed more consistent in their later seasons, no other show has such a memorable group of characters, no other show has such an interesting world, no other show is as emotional, epic, or realistically tragic. Something great about the show is how characters don't escape from death just because they seem important. Another good thing about the show is that even when one storyline in an episode is weak there are normally other storylines that are done very well. In this episode however, none of this applies. Both storylines are horrible. The timeline is all messed up, the fact that almost everyone survived is ridiculous, the arya and sansa plotline still makes no sense even after watching the next episode. Benjen stark shows up just to die. This episode nearly ruined Arya who is one of the best characters. Gendry shouldn't have been able to run back that quickly, Daenerys shouldn't have been able to make it north that quickly. I could go on but the point is this: Game of Thrones was great because of its politics, morally gray characters, realistic stakes even with its fantasy setting, epic action, and its willingness to kill off any character while still being satisfying. This episode has none of that. There is some decent acting and a few good moments that are only spectacle. Fortunately the finale was good. Hopefully season 8 will be back to the quality of seasons 5 and 6 (the show will never be as good as seasons 1,3, and 4 again which are the best seasons). Benioff and Weiss, please don't ever write anything this stupid again
Game of Thrones: Mother's Mercy (2015)
SPOILERS for this episode and season 6 If I could bring one character back
...It would be Stannis Baratheon. Such an interesting character played by an amazing character yet he has such a depressing and unsatisfying end. Now in the books Stannis is far better prepared for the bolton attack and will probably win the battle. Ideally the show would have done this as well but there others ways this storyline could have been done better. They could have had Stannis save Theon and Sansa from the Bolton soldiers but get wounded in the process and then have Brienne mercy kill him instead of killing him for revenge. They could have had him die in an epic battle. They could have had him take winterfell and then have to deal with what he did to his daughter. Anyway, the version in the show is fine and it was at least sad, well acted, and an interesting look at how ambition can bring someone's downfall.
As for the other storylines
Sansa and Theon: Great to see Theon finally start to reclaim his identity and it's amazing how resiliant Sansa is.
Jon: Great scenes between sam and Jon and Jon and Davos. Very emotional death scene
Dorne: Great scene between Jaime and his daughter before her death which is a great set up for Cersei's continued spiral into madness
Daenerys: She was captured nothing amazing here
Meereen: Entertaining banter between the characters
Braavos: Brutal and satisfying death of Meryn Trant, shocking twist with Arya going blind
King's Landing: Finally Cersei gets what she deserves, the mountain returns
Aquaman (2018)
Better than every mcu movie except for iron man and winter soldier
Before you call me a dceu fanboy you should know that I hate suicide squad and found justice league incredibly disappointing. A dceu fanboy would think that all six dceu movies are masterpieces. That being said I have loved the other dceu movies and I am not a fan of the mcu. I find most of their movies bland, obnoxious, superficial and soulless. On the other hand, aquaman is none of those things. It has heart, a good arc for the main character, its villains have a little more depth than most mcu villains, its vfx/music and cinematography are easily superior to every mcu movie. The soundtrack is easily one of the best of the year. Amber Heard and Jason Momoa have great chemistry and the supporting cast are all memorable. The best part about this movie is that while it does have humor, it never cuts into the emotional moments. Aquaman like wonder woman before it is sincere and allows its drama and action scenes to play out without every character cracking jokes every five seconds. Another thing aquaman does well is that it gives its villains plenty of screen time. The movie isn't perfect, its pacing is a little messy and its story is predictable, but it commits to its tone and because of that it works. I think that the anti dceu bias is obvious considering that it has far worse reviews than most mcu movies. The vfx alone would make this a better movie than black panther but the likable characters, good acting, production design, music, directing, and tone make this the second best live action superhero movie of 2018 behind deadpool 2. In a fair world aquaman would receive oscar nominations for vfx, score, production design, sound mixing and sound editing. In reality it will receive none of these things while black panther which had horrible vfx and sound design will receive tons of technical nominations and even a best picture nomination. Oh and my review will receive tons of down votes because mcu fanboys can;t handle the idea of dc even trying to compete
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
This is going to get be a lot of down votes but...
As anyone with good taste in film knows, the only good marvel movies from the last few years have come from fox (deadpool, deadpool 2,logan, days of future past, first class). The mcu on the other hand has produced mostly mediocre trash. Finally, a studio besides fox has released a good marvel movie. Into the the spiderverse has everything the mcu lacks (good acting, directing, tension, humor that is actually funny, drama that actually matters, an interesting visual style, and characters that do things other than making obnoxious quips every five seconds). It isn't perfect, some parts are predictable and while they try to give the villains some depth they still aren't that interesting. That being said spiderverse is the best spiderman movie since spiderman 2, the second best superhero movie of 2018 after deadpool 2, and a welcome break from the mcu
The Walking Dead: What Comes After (2018)
Awful
First the good: The scene with Shane, Andrew Lincoln's performance
The bad: The green screen. Somehow Rick is able to stay on the horse while bleeding out yet he couldn't stay on in the last episode despite being fine. Somehow Rick didn't bleed to death. Somehow Rick didn't die in the explosion. Somehow the workers conveniently left explosives on the bridge. Maggie doesn't kill Negan which means the forced conflict of the last few episodes was pointless. The group conveniently shows up to help Rick. It was obvious from the beginning that Rick would get rescued by the helicopter. Rick just happens to wash up right when it was convenient for Jadis. The ending scene which Judith was cheesy. There were plenty of other cheesy moments.
Why are they doing another time skip, why aren't they showing us how the groups recovered from and dealt with losing Rick. I bet at least two of the new characters introduced in the last scene will die before they are developed.
Why didn't Rick get a last confrontation with Negan?
Why are they still keeping Negan alive?
Why should I care that Rick is no longer on the show when they announced that he will star in at least three movies?
SPOILERS FOR OTHER TV SHOWS LIKE VIKINGS AND GAME OF THRONES
This isn't some tragic sacrifice like in Vikings with Ragnar's death. This isn't some shocking twist like the deaths of Ned, Catelyn, and Robb Stark. Why did amc constantly advertise this was Rick's last episode? If they had kept it secret at least it would have been somewhat shocking Rick Grimes is going to be doing what he's been doing for 9 years just with different people so why make such a big deal. This show is awful and the people making it will keep milking it even though it terrible. I am done, I said I would stop watching once Rick left because I knew amc would handle it horribly. Little did I know they would not only send him off in a stupid way, but they are just using him to make a series of movies for more profit. How is an awful show like this on the same network as the brilliant series Better Call Saul?
The Walking Dead: The Obliged (2018)
I have no idea what people are thinking...
I'm sorry but this season has been just as awful as the last few. Let me point out some horrible about this episode alone
1) Gabriel and Anne's relationship is forced and their chemistry is awful
2) It was obvious Anne wasn't going to have the walker attack Gabriel
3) It was obvious the two walker herds were going to merge
4) Rick trusting Daryl to help him stop Maggie is stupid when Rick knows Daryl agrees with Maggie
5) Rick and Daryl just happen to fall into the only pit in the area and it was hilarious
6)It was obvious both Rick and Daryl were going to make it out of the pit, there was no tension in that scene
7) Rick going off on his own when he knew two walker hordes were out there is stupid
8) Rick getting thrown off a horse after he's been riding them for years is pathetic
9) Rick just happening to get thrown off into the only piece of rebar around is ridiculous and screw the showrunners for leaving that as a cliffhanger only to show what happens in the promo
10) Michonne talking to negan is stupid, she should know he would try to manipulate her
11) Negan viewing his bat as a person is stupid
12) Eugene is still annoying
13) The conversations are all still boring and melodramatic
There are other things I could mention but the point is that I have no idea how people think this is good let alone a perfect 10/10. Thankfully rick will be dead or at least gone so I can stop watching this overrated piece of trash. i hope the ratings continue to drop (and they will)
Ocean's Eight (2018)
Thank you James Corden and Anne Hathaway...
For giving some life to this otherwise dull, bland, and pointless "film". Your performances were the only enjoyable parts, everyone else was boring. Oh and the people who marketed the movie spoiled the twist in with the poster.
The Big Bang Theory: The Planetarium Collision (2018)
Really?
It was a fairly standard episode of the big bang theory. Some jokes were funny, some weren't. We know what to expect at this point. The only truly awful part was when Sheldon explains mansplaining to Amy. This show is built on stereotypes of men, women, jews, indians, and many others. For the writers to go all progressive on us is hypocritical and ridiculous.
The Walking Dead: A New Beginning (2018)
Awful
You know how to tell when something is poorly written? When a character dies in the same episode they are introduced and then the episode spends over half its run time trying to make us care about the fallout from this person's death. I'll admit the first scene in the museum had some tension (despite it making no sense) but after that everything was boring or laughable. The time gap between season 8 and 9 is over a year and yet they just now started trying to work together even though most of the leaders are friends with each other? Give me a break. Besides that we get the same boring dialogue about how broken the world is, how everyone needs to be stronger and work together etc. Horribly overrated show, at this point I'm only watching to see how they handle losing two of the most important actors.
Castle Rock: Romans (2018)
I blame J J Abrams
Castle Rock is a show with decent acting and great production values. Unfortunately it is also slow and has boring characters. This is because it is a J J Abrams project and just like with everything he has done castle rock focuses more on setting up a boring mystery box instead of creating an interesting story and set of characters. Not only that but they don't even give you the answers which makes for an unsatisfying viewing experience. The same thing happened with westworld season 2, the cloverfield franchise, and the new star wars movies. I haven't seen any of his other tv shows but I know that people hated the way lost ended because it was yet another Abrams project with great set up and an awful ending. All Abrams does is rip off of better stories or create empty mystery boxes. Why do people consider this guy the next Spielberg?
Game of Thrones: Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken (2015)
Underrated spoilers for season 5 and 6
I have the benefit of hind sight in regard to the series since I binged the whole thing before the start of season 7. Because I binged the whole show in a week there was nothing that really stood out that justified this being rated as the show's worst episode. Many people hate the episode because of dorne and sansa getting raped and gave the whole thing 1 star because of it. Lets look at each subplot of this episode to see if the 1 star ratings are justified deserved.
Tyrion and Jorah: We get a great moment where tyrion and Jorah talk about Jorah's father. There is also some entertaining banter between the two of them before they are captured by slavers. We get another great moment where tyrion escapes death by talking his way out of it.
Arya: Arya plays the game of faces and is forced to accept that she doesn;t hate the hound any more. The scene where she successfully lies to the girl about the poison and the reveal of the hall of faces were also very impressive
Kingslanding: We see yet another example of how Littlefinger is the best player of the game. There is also a great moment between Olenna and Cersei. Finally in a shocking twist both Loras and Margaery are arrested by the faith. Cersei's Plan seems to be working perfectly. (The High Sparrow is easily the best of the new characters that were introduced this season.
Winterfell: Sansa stands up for herself against Ramsay's insane girlfriend. The wedding ceremony was very well done. And now for the rape scene. Is it disturbing? Yes. Is it horrible that Sansa had to suffer even more? Yes? Did we already know how horrible Ramsay was? Yes. However, Sansa didn't know. It was perfectly in Ramsay's character to do something horrible like that and its even worse in the books. Not to mention that now Sansa realizes she can't just blindly trust Littlefinger. He threw her into a horrible situation and did't know better. Those saying that the show runners didn't care about Sansa's pain during the scene were proven wrong in Season 6 when SPOILER
Sansa confronts Littlefinger about what happened and describes how she can still feel what happened. The scene was done as tastefully as possible and the way Sansa described the scene in season 6 is something I've never heard before in any movie or tv show yet it also sounds very realistic. Sansa's suffering in king's landing helped her in becoming less naive in regards to princes and queens while her suffering in winterfell helped her become less naive about Littlefinger. This episode also starts Reek/Theon on a path to redemption.
Dorne: Yeah okay this was really bad. The sand snakes are horrible characters and the fight choreography and editing was terrible. To this date this was the worst action scene in the show
In conclusion, 4 of 5 story lines were great while 1 wasn't which equals 8 out of 10 stars. Even if I thought the winterfell plot was bad this episode that would be 6 or 7 stars. The worst episode of the show is not Unbowed Unbent Unbroken, it's season 7 episode 6 Beyond the Wall
Wonder Woman (2017)
Good but...
No where near as good as man of steel or bvs. Wonder woman has good acting, strong humor, plenty of emotional moments, memorable characters and a strong sense of hope. However, it is no where near as complex or thought provoking as man of steel or bvs. It is way better than that superficial piece of pandering garbage suicide squad which was neither emotional or thought provoking
This isn't surprising since most mainstream audiences didn't understand those movies which forced dc to do something more straight forward with this movie. The funny thing is that I see people are still complaining about it not having humor or character development even though the movie clearly has both of those things.
Unfortunately, these people are so blind with their hate toward the dceu that they won't watch any more movies the franchise puts out. I find this funny considering that the only good mcu movie before the avengers was iron man. The rest were garbage yet you all stuck around. Oh and I don't care if this review offends people. I'm tired of not being able to voice my opinion without getting a ton of hate for it. Marvel has ruined the movie industry with their formulaic generic and safe movies. Dc is trying to do something different every time yet people complain. This of course is because people don't like to think and they don't like blockbusters that do something different
Baywatch (2017)
Spoilers if you didn't watch the trailer Better than expected
I was expecting to hate this movie. None of the jokes in the trailers made me laugh, and the cast looked like they were chosen for their appearance rather than their acting. After watching the movie I can say its better than I thought. Not great, but fine. Some jokes work others don't. Sometimes the tone doesn't always work; there are parts where its stupid, parts where it tries to be more serious, and parts where it tries to be more self aware and it doesn't always work. The acting is mostly good. The stand outs are The Rock and Zack Efron, they also have the most to work with. As for the supporting players, Jon Bass probablystands out as the comic relief. You may be wondering about the women. Alexandra Daddario has a couple good comedic moments. Kelly Rohrbach and Ilenesh Hadera were fine although they didn't have much screen time. The characters have little depth but like I said decent acting helps. The weak link is Priyanka Chopra. SPOILER
If you've seen the trailer you know she is the villain. Unfortunately while she tries to come off as seductive it ended up being more awkward. Also, the plot and character arcs are very predictable. Still Baywatch is entertaining enough to satisfy summer moviegoers. I give it 6/10 for being far better than I expected ( I was expected a disaster along the lines of the recent "comedies" Chips and Snatched.
