Congo (1995)

Great cast, OK movie
10 April 2024
If this movie wasn't so far removed from the source material, it could be better. Congo by Michael Crichton was a great book but they cut it up here to such an extent that it's nearly unrecognizable. And it didn't seem necessary. They added characters and changed motives and yet almost ended up in the same place.

I think the actors did the best they could but it wasn't enough. They needed more to work with. It feels like they just wanted Tim Curry in this movie as a draw but his part was unnecessary and silly.

I probably should have waited longer after reading the book to watch it. Maybe that would have made it seem better.

Not great
22 December 2023
I wanted to like this, cause it kept coming up on Freevee to watch but no one in this thing is even remotely likeable. I hated them all. They are just all yucky people.

What kind of family likes their son's ex who left him better than him? And why would they treat him so badly and her so good?

The attraction between the leads was not there. They were so awful to each other and just in general that it made no sense for them to want to get together.

I guess it was ok for what it was, but maybe I just prefer older movies that are actually good. But this one is not good, not even sort of good. It's just not.

I Wanted to Like It
22 October 2023
I did. Really I did. I've watched all the other Flanagan shows on Netflix, some were better then others, Hill House was the absolute best, way above the others. But Usher was the worst!

We only got half way through the second episode of this crap before we just couldn't stand it anymore. It was so cliched, full of unlikeable characters, gratuitous sex, perversion and foulness, including the language, that it was just unwatchable.

Poe was a master and he deserved better. The language alone, Poe wasn't trashy. At least Shirley Jackson wasn't reviled like that. So yourself a favor, avoid this one and rewatch Hill House.

Big Misstep in this Episode
30 September 2023
I was happy to see all the old characters coming back. The season started out good and I was looking forward to what was still about to happen.

But then they completely lost me when they went to the Tea Party Club to get recruits and yet literally lashed at them based on their beliefs.

All that nonsense about how loving they are and everybody is welcome went right out the window. Apparently everybody is welcome except anybody whose opinions disagree with theirs. I really didn't like to see that because up until this point they've pretty much allowed anybody in without that sort of attitude towards others. It's just really sad that they had to ruin it like that.

I Wanted to Like it More
10 May 2023
It was just OK. Not sure how it missed the mark exactly but it didn't have the charm of the first two Ant-Man movies. The whole thing just felt flat and muddled.

The impression was that someone had just watched the Temple of Doom, several Star Wars movies, and some random episodes of Doctor Who and The Orville and then mashed that all together without any actual plot or story behind it.

It could have been better. I was ready to give up half way through and go do something else but I held out to the end. It was ok, not actually terrible, but just not great.

I really wanted to like it more than I did.

Not a ghost story
26 October 2020
If you're hoping for a ghost story, this is not that. Apparently they were going for a love story, but I'm not even sure I believe that. If I had known that was the point I would not have watched. It's 9 hours I will never get back, filled with lots of random nonsense that never went anywhere, but just looped around a lot. If you skip the whole thing and just watch episode 8, at least you'll get a bit of a ghost story but other than that, save your time and rewatch The Haunting of Hill House which is a million times better.

Musicals are the best
26 March 2020
As a chick from the '80s, I was singing along with them and I really enjoyed the episode. I know one reviewer said nothing really happened, but I think they just weren't paying attention. And if they already don't like musicals I can only assume they were a millennial or a Gen Xer that doesn't know good music when they hear it. Don't pay attention to the negativity, this episode definitely moved things along, although I don't see how they will finish everything in the finale.

I'm very sad that there's only one episode left, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to go back to the beginning and re-watch the whole series because I will miss The Magicians.

Slow and Dull
3 March 2020
I tried but only got half way through the episode. It was slow moving and I kept hoping it was building up to something. But it was just too weird and drawn out. Nothing interesting happened at all. Not sure about the review that said it was in the 80s, it was not at all related to the 80s.
